They probably didn’t stop until old Mexico. It’s been a long time since I shot a canvasback, maybe this will be the season.

Bayoubob and I see a few canvasbacks where we typically hunt and one year he picked out trophy drake and also got a hen, many years ago I had fine pair come in took one shot and dropped hen, drake took two shots and STILL escaped. They love wild celery, guess it must be prevalent where we hunt and they can absolutely cruise and humble even the sharpest of shotgunners!!

Great eating duck!

The book 'Chesapeake' by James Michener goes into great detail about the hunting and selling of Canvasbacks on the Chesapeake bay back in the 1800's. The Turlock family had heavy long guns mounted on the skiffs that killed 100's of duck at night with one shot. The ducks were sold in New York. The feds finally outlawed the long guns and there was an ongoing battle with the Turlocks to confiscate the guns and stop the slaughter.

Great read if you love to bust ducks!
