Pontchartrain Specs, Redfish, Anything...(looking for advice)

Reply
I'm hoping someone can give me some advice for getting on some fish on the northshore or even somewhere within decent driving distance of Mandeville.

My dad has a hobie kayak that he lets me borrow whenever I want, and I've decided I should get some more use out of it. I've taken it out in Cane Bayou and Castine a number of times and usually catch a few bass (typically on a brushog or fluke). I haven't really saltwater fished since I was a kid fishing out of Dularge (with the exception of the occasional offshore trip), but I suddenly got the itch to try to catch some specs/redfish/anything saltwater.

Not looking for anyone's secret spots, just a little advice to get going. Anything would be greatly appreciated!

Launch at Hwy 11 at bas of the bridge south shore side, fish the trestles.

Same on north side at base of Hwy 11 bridge fish trestles.

Find a place around the Blind Tiger (Slidell) launch and fish that body of water behind Blind Tiger

Off Paris road in Chalmette, launch at Gulf Outlet Mariner behind hotel, fish in / all around mariner. Fish drop offs, depth finder would be nice.

Email me staneyftink@charter.net and we will send you maps for GOM area, & Delacroix area show you where the Redworries are located, H&H purple beetle matched up with H&H round white jig head w/gold hook should do the trick.

Wannayak,Tried to reply via I-Phone but dat bombed out-here goes trial #2.The entire shorelines of NShore from mouth of Cane Bayou E towards and beyond Bayou Lacombe and Bayou Liberty have some of the saltiest and most pristine water ya gonna find ANYWHERE,trust me on dat!!I do lotta duck hunting and chasing reds and specks, flounders as well and hard to beat Bomber spinnerbaits, coupled with the fine soft plastic minnow(Yum Mud Minnow)and match color with water conditions, clear water calls for lighter colors, darker water calls for darker colors.Right now,I have been totally immersed with Medicare and Individual Health enrollments, barely leaves time for duck hunts and no time for fishing trips BUT dat gonna change after this coming Monday and after Friday, will no longer have to shell out the $3 fee to launch at Cane, probably one of ya best bets to access the grassbeds at the mouth of Cane!!Pretty soon, gonna be crafting custom-made soft plastics not for sale but for personal use and from ALL the reports I have received and continue to receive, some dem lures CRUSHING fish like NO OTHER currently-available lures!!!Good luck out there, might see my camo SouthFork, lotta duck hunters recognize de MotherShip!!!

For some real kicks, try early am trips tossing bone-colored Top Dogs!!

Checked predicted wind and todal forecasts and Wifey and I just might be launching outta Cane Bayou this Friday and hope to scope out the fine pristine shorelines I am referring to!Water out there extremely clear, takes long casts to NOT spook fish and saw where de Wiz had sheepshead on top-water lure, check dat out!!Where we intend to fish LOADED with fine sheepshead, easily spot em with fine polarized fishing glasses and lost fine one dat hit a Wiz Special, wake bait!!Good luck out there, plenty of folks use yaks to fish where we intend to fish and water salinity gotta be off de charts, gonna check HydroCoast Map today!!

Oneofthepack and Mandevillian, thanks for the responses.
I am actually trying to get out there this Friday; considering either Cane Bayou or Lacombe
Obviously it is going to be a trial run for me, but still hoping to get a few bites. Worst case I will get a better feel for the lay of the land

Wannayak,Slight change of plans as I went to Mandeville Harbor yesterday, saw four big rig trailers parked at Harbor, possibly folks trolling the Big Bridge and mud flats were showing so Wifey and I gonna launch at Main St in Lacombe, venture as far as mouth of Bayou Lacombe and possibly head E towards possibly saltier water closer to Bayou Liberty.Picked up some brined shrimp at Hammond Wally World for Wifey(gonna do Carolina rig for her)and I plan to toss Top Dogs and soft plastics plus Wiz's wake baits(sheepshead love em as do specks, reds, doggone garfish)!!!Good luck!!

I ended up going to Lacombe and decided to grab some frozen shrimp just in case I got desperate. Pretty much started at the mouth and went E a couple miles then worked my way back. Tried spinner baits, soft plastics, even rattle traps, but no luck. Just for kicks I had the shrimp on a cork floating behind me and actually caught two reds like that (each one about 15.5”). I need to figure out how to catch em on the plastics, but it was certainly enough to make me go back.

Wannayak,Wifey and I had an awesome time fishing what is left of once-thick grassbeds out near Goose Point and beyond! The grassbeds look like they got scorched by extra-high salinity water and the crabs on the beach are more than incredible.Wifey did try a spinnerbait BUT dat only works when ya got fish chasing prey in thick grassbeds!!!if I were you,get on Google Maps and find the trenasses that drain the vast Big Branch Marsh and using a yak, probably shortest route would be to launch at end of Lake Rd and head W towards Goose Pt and hit the trenases, especially on falling tide!!Good luck and now I NO LONGER have to pay to launch at Cane-think I gonna hit dat area EVERY DAY!!!

Wannayak,I scoped out few sites to see what kinda tidal and wind conditions gonna possibly greet me this coming week(finally, after Tues, gonna have PLENTY free time)and Wed and Th and Fr look awesome for fishing the areas from mouth of Cane Bayou on over to Goose Pt.Trestles holding some fine specks but dat would be tough paddle and the canal system in the Eden Isles area should have some high-salinity water and jigging some deep holes might be de ticket.Think I may be on to decent way to use Berkley Gulps on bait hook and Carolina rig with small egg sinker above hook(Wifey was putting on clinic last trip out)!!!!!

Wannayak,Might wanna wait a tad til ole Lady P clears up a tad as the persistent NNW and NW winds have kicked her up terribly and no self-respecting fish wanna be in all dat filthy water. If ya get a chance, scope out Louisiana Produce Man You Tube videos, perhaps the ONLY Lake P You Tubes ya gonna wanna watch as he and his sidekick,Causeway Dave Raggio,NEVER act like they are God's gift to finesse fishermen and they always seem to terrorize Trestles specks and often reds with a few sheepshead in de mix.I texted ole AJ and Dave kidding them dat dey caught the dummies at de Trestles leaving de rest of us de smart ones!!!Good luck, love yak and pirogue fishing, such a low-profile ya often sneak up on Jacks, bull sharks, reds, etc and de grassbeds formerly thick and lush are virtually non-existent!!!

Wannayak,AJ fishes and I hit de Trestles today and the water is extremely salty and super-clear and he and I could see our soft plastics down to at least 4 ft and with the fine polarized glasses I recently got,was hoping to watch some sheepshead high-tail it to smack some dem fine azz Shakers I was tossing but we saw not a minnow and think ya best bet is to hit the canal systems in Lakeshore Estates and Eden Isles but be prepared to toss and toss some lures!!!

I actually managed to get back out there today. Put the kayak in at the end of lake rd like last time. Went towards goose point and fished most of the morning with no luck. Finally decided to head towards bayou Lacombe and picked up one 16.5” red on my second or third cast and missed another good bite. Unfortunately, the rain started soon after and I was running out of time so called it a day. Going to try to get back out there sometime next week

I really figured out how to get back out there today. Put the kayak in toward the finish of lake rd like last time. Went towards goose point and fished a large portion of the morning with no karma. At long last chose to head towards straight Lacombe and got one 16.5' red on my second or third cast and missed another great chomp. residential fence installation

For what it is worth,S Shore of Lake P looking much better than N Shore and yaks would be fine way to nab some nice reds at the numerous and typically redfish-filled PowerLine Pilings, such a fun trip with a decent amount of aerobic exercise involved, particularly if one has the notion to head from Williams Blvd W towards the Parish Line(Duncan)Canal and for some strange reason Piling #52 seemed to be one of the ones loaded up with reds, maybe water depth a tad better than other sets of Pilings.Good luck, should be getting ole SouthFork back on water pronto!!!
