Nuck and Futz Hunt 12 5 2020

De Nuck and Futz Duo had intentions of busting up some big ducks today and guess my prognostication about having nothing but mottled ducks and few,if any,big ducks actually transpired!!!We always joke bout more hunters vs ducks and dat was INDEED de case today!!!Low water conditions did not allow access,at least not reasonable access,to where we wanted to head to.Got decent start to hunt, hit grey duck right after first light, watched him rapidly descend as he was losing oil pressure, texted Ole Nuck to see if he spotted duck but to no avail. Each of us busted Scaup and lucky me had fine pair of mottled ducks headed right for me,they figured dey in de clear but busted big drake and he hit hard enough to skin off plenty of feathers on back!!Heard decent amount of shooting, think we gonna head elsewhere tomorrow to kinda get away from crowds!!Hate to say it but each of us glad First Split done tomorrow, then I will concentrate on chasing some fish!!!Hope hunters out today fared ok-saw very few big ducks and saw even less ducks getting nabbed, guess I need to count my lucky stars-two mottled ducks on last two hunts and pintail Th was not too shabby!!

Mandy, I completely agree with your philosophy trying to get away from the other hunters, but right off of Bayou Liberty in Big Branch is outstanding hunting right now. We have limited every hunt , yesterday we had 5 people in the blind. Just a friendly note from a fellow duck hunter.

Bracki7,Hope your hunting buddies ok with you broadcasting on here where ya hunt!Awesome that yall did well on every hunt,HATE overcrowded conditions and not sure what is worse-hunting on top of each other or the converse-hunting well away from folks, not necessarily taking limits but QUALITY ducks.Check out deck shot from today and had NO ONE anywhere near me.Do have hopes for strong Second Split, gotta harvest bunch of tall palmetto branches and do a little scouting.Had somewhat comical situation yesterday-had quite a few hunters scattered around us and I guess I musta been de lucky one to have two probably inexperienced hunters set up not that close to me but with decoys on opposite side of where dey needed to be and they set up with wind in their faces, guess I was fortunate that they left early, right after watching me drop fine drake mottled duck and about 20 min prior was having conversation with either mallard/mottled duck hen-she would quack four to five times,I would imitate her calling and this went on for about 10 minutes and she swam almost close enough!!!Good luck Second Split, might wanna keep ya spots under wraps!!

Oh Mandy, As you already know 90% of these people don't know what they are doing, wind to the face, set up on wrong side island, call when they shouldn't, its kind of like sitting at the boat launch, we enjoy the show. Let em come, as long as they don't run the mud boats out there they will watch us do the killing (we believe the noise of the mud boats do more harm than the pressure). I just as soon drop a pin, went fishing out there this morning was a group set up on same island we were yesterday, had 3 spinning wings going, shot 2 ducks. Like I said, we used diff decoys and no spinning wings, different calls and do it at the proper time. I get the feeling you would do well over by us.

Gotta give credit where credit is due-older son wanted to smoke some freshly-killed ducks and he cooked some using his smoker and those ducks were more than incredible.Might get him to smoke dat stinky ole scaup I shot today!!What he cooked was a pintail hen and mottled duck pair and hard to beat pintails(not like I shoot a lotta pintails)and mottled ducks are so similar to mallards, bet there aint a dime's worth of difference in the taste of mallard/mottled ducks.Might get with ya before Second Split to compare notes-like I said,I do not broadcast my hunt locations for plenty reasons and did chat with gent this am who knows where we hunt/I know where he hunts and we respect each other's locations! Not bragging about my calling skills but had hunter tell me he heard a flock of mallards in one of the ponds that I was hunting and I told him dat was ME making dat mallard music!!!Have had more than just a few conversations with both drake and hen mallards!Greys much easier to converse with and always fun knowing dat ya calling made de difference!!

Miles 1234,Amen brother, know dat place better than probably just about every hunter who hunts her, been at it over 20 years and there may be pockets of teal in certain hard-to-access ponds(Nuck and Futz Duo destroyed teal in teal season)but virtually NO big ducks, save for the handful of mottled ducks dumb enough to soar close enough and a few possibly resident mallards.Think lotta folks living near some of our choice spots feed the mallards, thinking they are 'their ducks' when in fact, dem babies belong to every resident in state of LA!!!Hope Second Split brings in replenishment of greys, think between us we shot maybe 6 greys, horrible!!!

P.S. Hope Lady P fishing good this Friday!!

Mandevillian it look like we r done here in the south 4 to 5 bad years on little to no big duck coming down all we have is a lot of dogrees and we can only have 1 and now 2 got a few grays at the start of the season. To me the short stop up north is what killing us, they can do what ever they what, plant milo and then flood it plant corn and flood, they or now digging up peanut and flood it , i still say our chance is to b able to feed down here they can say what they want water in the feed or feed in the water no different we need our wildlife and fisheries to help and our representatives and senators to help us . If not it\'s only going to get worse down here for my self i give it 1 more year thin i done, i will stick to fishing sad . O one more i have not even seeing any teal much les no green heads on pintails on wegion we do have hoods.

@Bracki7. Where do you launch out of? Bayou liberty?

speckle_searcher,Yep,numerous factors entering into the equation but the puzzling piece is that Venice is a mecca for ducks, not sure how they totally avoid the areas we typically hunt but short-stopping most definitely has a negative impact. On the good news front,Wifey and I fished Lake P yesterday and we spotted a huge flock of teal, probably 75 in flock, headed exactly where I have seen lotta flocks of ducks emerge from!!!Second Split is typically better,at least for us,than First Split and where I typically hunt, greenheads and mottled ducks hang out and I know targeting mottled ducks aint the easiest hunting proposition BUT they sometimes fly right on top of me and gladly take one per hunt!!!Miles1234,about 100% guarantee that Bracki7 launches at Bayou Liberty.Never met him,at least I do not think I have and I personally hate crowds at launches, crowds hunting same area as me, SO think my Second Split gonna be areas I have learned over past 20 some odd years of chasing waterfowl!!What is wrong with shooting a few mallards, possibly getting decent chances at mottled ducks and if I find em,plenty of teal and woodies ONLY in certain hard-to-access ponds!!!
