Gotta Adapt to Changing Duck Patterns 1 4 22

By everyone's accounts, this has been yet another in a series of bummer duck seasons BUT when one gets tossed bunch of lemons, why not squeeze dem lemons extra-hard and MAKE lemon daquiris!!!Decided to head to Honey Island Swamp for what promised to be much-needed change of pace and got to where I figured few woodies might be and had two young hunters arrive bout few minutes later and we exchanged ideas and they were going in nice area and I told em I would be LONG ways away.Always baffles me why some folks wanna take first set or series of ponds when dat only aggravates ya as folks paddle right on top of ya.These fellows had great spot and they were probably aware of duck flight patterns as of late,I was going on a hunch and it indeed paid off, though had to chat with fella dat apparently thought my early am Q beam was the sign to come join me!!!To this hunter's credit,he did ask which direction I was facing and we had plenty room between us!!Set out two small sets of dekes, hunkered down awaiting screeching of drakes and did fire single shot at pair that were in marginal range,re-loaded just in time to spot three hooked-up woodies and barely had chance to fire one shot dat broke de neck of fine drake.Let him sit, fella next to me got at least one and I had to fire warning shot at pair of river otters dat apparently wanted MY drake more than me!!!Dat was it for today and more than ecstatic at my take and hit tree rat woods, spooked drake off slough but only heard him did not spot him!!Might make few return trips pronto!!

The only chance I’ve had to pick up a gun this year was to pepper a beaver behind the house the other night. I do need to get out in the woods and change up my scenery!

Blue Shamu,Good thing I spotted those theiving river otters BEFORE they tried to steal my drake. My wingman,Nuck of de Nuck and Futz Duo told me damn otter stole one of their grey ducks outta pirogue many years ago. Just got off phone with one of the most fanatical duck hunters I know and he wants to get me in on either a MS or LA duck hunt next week and also hoping to make a trip to CCAguns’ deer ranch PLUS GB3’s Quack Shack(damn how I gonna find the time)will MAKE the time. Get dem beavers destroyed.

Mandevillian have you hunted the march much this year? Last year I trapped 12 beavers that was fun to do as well...

Yes,I have struggled like most of our brethren. Probably should toss in de towel for marsh hunting concentrate on Honey Island woodies and hit deer stand.

As bad as duck hunting has gotten in the marsh, I gave it up for now. Seems like you have to have a good lease in a productive area or money to pay someone to bring you. I have been concentrating on trapping and deer hunting for now.

Mande, your passion for ducks never ceases to amaze me! You are a true die hard, and a gluten for punishment. The Nuck and Futz duo needs to head up here to Lake Village, Arkansas and shoot some of these geese up here! While ducks have been hit or miss, the geese have been steady all season! Look forward to seeing you guys.

Yep GB3, de Nuck and Futz Duo thoroughly exhausted and today no dang exception. Zigged when I shoulda Zagged and MT skies where we are SHOULDA hit fine woodie pond OR climbed into cozy tree stand well over 20 ft off ground in fine ole live oak. One of our members shot 9 pt few days ago but could NOT find. Think I gonna toss in towel regarding traditional duck hunting hit Honey Island balance of season. Takes MUCH less effort and who can argue with just ONE wood duck per hunt. ????????????????????

Looking at that Salty Solution page over on ya side of the lake the salt water conditions are favorable for your area., looking at chart last night it was hitting a 5 on the scale , I’d be fishing for sure and forget about those phantom ducks !

Wiz,Gonna have plenty time for wetting a line actually know few hunters doing EXCEPTIONALLY well they prefer like me to stay on down low til after season ends. Headed up to de Quack Shack this coming Sat-Tues and also got invite to join one of my favorite docs this coming week(we only get 60 days per season for ducks) and can fish AFTER.

Wiz,Think I mentioned this to ya,De Nuck and Futz Duo gonna make side trip to Simmons Sporting Goods Duck SuperStore in Bastrop on way up to GB3's fine Quack Shack, both of us most likely have enough steel for what promises to be bunch of steel-slinging fun BUT ole GB3 might be in need of few dem hard-to-find steel shells,at least in 12 Gauge shells.Got me bunch of Hevi Steel and Hevi Metal(kinda pricey but why not use awesome shells)and gonna browse what happens to be the store of Jeff Simmons,GB3's cousin!!!How appropriate and coincidental!!!Ole AJ Lacava joking with me bout having addiction to Quack while he and Causeway Dave addicted to Specks!!!

Mandevillian,chompin on de bit!!

Not sure why I am unable to post a new report but here goes attempt number 2!!De Nuck and Futz Duo having tough season, got writer for few publications wanting to write season re-cap told him wait til season over then write his season re-cap!Decided to try to thin out teal population and this Wed fortunate enough to cap fine and mature drake blue wing, estimated to be about 3 years old and texted G3,currently up in Lake Village at his fine Quack Shack and once he saw how trophy-worthy this lil drake was decided he wanted to disply this lil jewel and donating it to de Quack Shack.Headed up there, nice change of venue and aint the least bit bothered by the frigid conditions awaiting us.Bout 6 seasons ago I hunted in NDakota for a week and de cold-weather gear I had chewed up and spit out dat brutally cold,so who's fraid of Arkansas cold weather-not me!!

Forgot to mention how fortunate de Magnolia Outdoors Guy was yesterday.De Nuck and Futz Duo were in process of getting MotherShip put back onto her trailer and on my way to tow vehicle picked up trigger release mechanism folks using compound bow typically use.Figured correctly dat it belonged to him, saaw him right at launch and he gave exact description and gladly returned to proper owner.Said he missed 8 pt due to trying to use his fingers vs the best route, that being using trigger release mechanism I luckliy found and got back to him!!

GB3,Guess this is ONLY way for me to post bout de recent Nuck and Futz trip to de Quack Shack,so here goes!!GB3 graciously invited de Nuck and Futz Duo back up to de fine Quack Shack, timed our NShore departure in time to hit Simmons Sporting Goods on way up this past Sat and made afternoon hunt at GB3's fine gadwall hole, trouble was gaddies had their Rolex watches on and decided to pitch down JUST as legal shooting expiring!!!Sun awoke to frigid and snowy conditions that thankfully slowed down and we only bagged pair of spoonies and finely-plumed drake green wing!Mon tried yet another fine pit blind, saw little to no duck activity TONS of geese and called it quits on am hunt, made afternoon hunt in one of GB3's recently-acquired spots where GB3 and Tom,'The Flying Dutchman' from Shreveport hunted one pond de Nuck and Futz Duo hunted another spot and GB3 fired at some mallards,Nuck called in fine pair of specks, trouble was they failed to close de gap and stayed just bout 15 yards out!!!Tues, our last day hit yet another pit blind finally cashed in on small flock of low-hanging snows, dropped one thanks to bunch of rounds being fired!Highlights of our trip had to be Simmons in Bastrop,Hoot's Barbeque in McGehee Mon evening and Tom and GB3 bagging four specks in fine field behind nice Quack Shack!!One other highlight was watching Tom's incredibly calm and well-behaved British Lab,Macie, retrieve our quarry. Thanks,Tom and GB3,GB3-hope balance of ya season turns out well-wished I woulda brought ya my fine lay-out blind a client sold me bunch of years ago for bout half what a new one would run.Maybe next trip up will tag along lay-out blind and donate it to ya.Dat field behind Quack Shack might be prime spot for blind!!Guess another highlight was seeing long faces of angry duckmen from Alabama Mon evening at Hoot's-bet de bout as mad at ducks as us and they had some might-fine duck rigs!!!GB3-can't thank ya enough and most definitely appreciated invite!!!
