Bald Eagles

Does anyone know where any Bald Eagles can be seen this time of year in Louisiana?...without needing a boat to see 'em.

so far this year i've seen them while driving on I-310 and on river road between luling and ama, mostly around the diversion area.

only problem with that is no where to just stop and look. before you think about parking any where on the levee area, be forewarned, some st.charles cops are swell headed about their jobs, even just pulled off the road.

I seen them about 4 miles north of Edgard on river road, sitting in the willow trees along the river.

Where are you located.
There are a few nesting pairs along the Mississippi River. Just Drive down river road, between Gonzales and Laplace, and walk the leeve. You may want to see if you can find a nest. Hint there is a huge nest just south of the Convent Water Plant. Its in the highest tree around the area, you cant miss it. They were there back in Jan.

The ones in Edgard nest across the River
4 miles up river would be around convent, but just across the river

Closer than you think....
Just head down I55 and look right (west) about a mile before north pass, you will see some dead trees on the edge of the open marsh/swamp, one of those trees has an eagle nest in the top....

Also, I used to hunt ducks between the lake and Hwy 22 near Marina Del Ray, they had several nesting pair over in that area.
However, several big ($) houses have that place cut off from the east....

Eagle
To my surprise last Saturday at about 10 a.m. on Joe Yenni blvd. in Kenner I looked up to my left and said no.. that can't be, another truck was stopped on the other side looking up also. Sure enough a beautiful bald eagle landed in the top of a tree with what looked like a mullet it had just scooped up in the lake. The crows were trying to pick at it but without much luck. Both, the truck and I watched it for about 5 mins. What a beautiful sight. I also see them a lot on I-310 between kenner and luling.

DES ALLEMANDS

There are numerous eagles in and around the Toledo Bend area. Especially on the south end of the lake. Just last week a nice pair landed and stayed in the trees just above me below the levee in what they call the generator channel. I see them below the levee just about every time I'm there this time of year.

I am a avid fisherman of False River. I have noticed Bald eagles early in the morning flying along the bank in the middle of the horse shoe on the island side scavenging for fish. I saw one in the early in the morning scoop up about a 2 lb catfish that was floating at the top of the water. Hope you can somehow figure a way to go watch for them. They are a beautiful birds.

I don't where this eagle nest is. But it flyies along Bayou Lafourche between Lafourche Crossing and the community of St.Charles south of Thibodaux.

I've seen several in St John Parish, North of I-10 around the lakes and bayous there. Saw one last August near Bayou Perot out of Lafitte.

Outside Slidell
They have a nest outside of Slidell at the end of Shortcut Rd. by the old White Kitchen at the little rest area. There's a nice boardwalk that goes out near the nest. Well, there was before the storm. E-mail me and I can give you directions.

There are actually about a dozen nesting eagles right around Manchac. Fron I-55 you can see approx. a dozen nest. The easiest ones are the one on the island between Lake Maurepas and I-55 just a 1/4 mile north of hump on I-55 and the ones behind Middendorfs. There is another one a 1/4 mile north of the port commission on same side. Almost all of these are about a 1/4 mile from I-55, but it is wide open so it's easy to see. They're easy to see as they almost always nest on top of an old snag (cajun term for cypress tree that the top is broke off). There is also a nest 3/8 mile to the south of I-10 about four hundred yards west of 3-10. I see quite a few some days soaring high near Manchac, but not consistently. I've seen a few very close here, one almost went through my windshield last year near Ruddock.

Theres a nest alond the Houma Navigational Canal in Houma. It's about 1/2 mile south of Gulf Island Fabrication. I work there and watch them pick fish out the water for about the past 3 months now. However you do need a boat to see them if you dont work there.

EAGLES
I've done some work at PHI in Amelia.(just past morgan city). There were 2 eagles flying around there... I think that the lake that is on the side of PHI is lake Pelto (not sure). You can't get onto the field but the lake runs on the side of the air field... If you can get boat that sure would help to get a better look, but they were flying around...

Yes there are eagles by PHI in Amelia. The lake is Lake Palourde. There are tons of eagles around Bayou Chene and Bayou Shaffer.

funny story
back about 1983, when Annie Miller (God rest her soul) was doing the first swamp tours in Houma, a friend and I made a few duck hunts on Dr Haydel's lease, down Minor's Canal. 2 trips in a row, we saw an eagle sitting atop the same tree, back a few hundred feet in the marsh. 4th trip, we had binoculars, so we stopped and took a good, hard look. PLASTIC EAGLE, LMAO, she could "guarantee" an "Eagle" sighting on every tour!!!!!!

The salesman in me is impressed!!!!

I got an upclose and personal look at a beautiful, fully crested bald eagle this past weekend on Toledo Bend near Pirates Cove, which is the southeast part of the lake.

Right now in the news section of the LDWF website they talk about a guy from Pollock who got caught killing a bald eagle. What a serious loser!!

I hope they nail the poacher to the wall!!

On a side note, since you can't mention other websites, like louisianasportsman.com on rodnreel, do you suppose we shouldn't mention rodnreel on louisianasportsman.com? LOL.

sorry
Wasn't thinkin. We know where the best forums are anyway huh? The guy only got like a little over $1000 fine and probation. Sounds kind of light for killing something that was very endangered and a symbol of our nation.

Da Eagle has landed
Have been seeing a lot of eagles in New Orleans East along Chef Hwy in and around the Bayou Sauvage Wildlife Management , was really close to one that flew into a tree right next to were I was working a few weeks back and they are big-----on the guy that got caught shooting the eagle you can read the story on the Wildlife and Fisheries website under News , he said in a quote that " I thought it was a hark " , you can't shot harks or owls either so I can't understand how they went so easy on him because he thought it was a hark , I was always under the impression that the fine for a smackdown on an eagle was $100,000 , I think he's fine was $1,000 -----Benjamin Franklin was upset with the choice of the eagle as the national bird as he thought they were nothing more than a high faluting buzzard and wanted the turkey to be the bird of the nation

Eagle Nest
Along the Gulf Oil Canal in Salvador there is an active nest. Three weeks ago we passed and the young ones were walking around the nest with one adult in an adjacent tree keeping tabs on them. The nest is on the south side of the canal.

Saw a bald eagle sitting in a cypress tree near my duck lease in Monterey, LA back in January. Also saw what I think was a juvenile fly off with a squirrel while going down a bayou near there. Was told that the juvies don't have a white head. This one was bigger than any hawk I have ever seen, thinking it might be the offspring of the one we saw near the duck lease.
