cow island lake

I managed to get into cow island lake last weekend and the lake is so overgrown with, what looks like hydrilia, you cannot fish it . Is the lake gone and nothing can to be done? Is the corps. in charge of this lake ? If not who is ?

You ever heard of lost lake. Its exactly like that. THe lake is totally gone and nothing can be done. The la dept. of wildlife and fisheries has totally given up. Dont WASTE YOUR TIME.

I fished that Basin hot spot as a kid growig up. I recall the dam being destroued on what seems like more than one occassion. Why won't LDWF do something wth the lake. I would go fish it if I thught it would be anywhere close to the quality fishin hoe it was 25 yrs ago

So, Captain and gold, I'm curious to know what, exactly, you expect Wildlife and Fisheries to do.
Do you know what it costs to treat hydrilla? The LSU agcenter spent $1,000,000, count 'em, that's six zeros, in Henderson and guaranteed that the hydrilla would be eradicated.
Look at those results.
And, you can control the water levels in Henderson. The water levels can't be controlled in the basin. The basin is filling in with sand and sediment. Do you have any idea what it would cost to dredge all of the fishing holes in the basin that have filled in? And, what would you do with the dredge material?
Give Wildlife and Fisheries some ideas. I'm sure they read this forum.

I know the wier keeps water in cow island lake and allows it be fishable for longer periods of time, but what if it wasn't there. The lake would rise and drain naturally and maybe the lake drying up sometimes would be good for clearing out the grass. At least it would be the natural cycle.

lost lake was one of the most pristine lakes around here, it offered great bass fishing, especially fishing the root system of the cypress trees. if you knew the bayous that ran thru the lake, you could fish the deeper water in the summer. It wasnt' heavily fished. When the river was down, it took an effort to pull over about 1/4 mile. But, the flood of 1973 added about 3 ft of silt and it remains today, so its now a shallow lake.

There is a fish that eats the hydrilla. It is called the asian grass carp. It is a hybrid an is sterile after it has hatched. Lake Austin had 1,600 grass carps dumped into it to try and control it's hydrilla problem. Why has nothing of this manner been done or thought of for our lakes in louisiana. We simply stand by and say that they are lost and give up. That is unacceptable. Our state gives up too easily on matters of management. Perhaps a smaller organization that covers regional topics of discussion across the state? Please reply with ideas, but dont give up.

Ldwf has been bitten in the butt a few times while using grass carp.
See Caney Lake and False River. The carp would escape over the wier in high water .
I fished cow island lake many years ago and it is a beautiful place . But unless some place is land locked it might be a waste to put triploid carp into it.

I just think Cow Island Lake and Lost Lake present unique fishing holes and I think we should do something.LOL to all and their opinions and ideas.

I am aware that the weir maintains water in Cow Island Lake and extends the fishing season, but what if it weren't there?
