55 gallon drum

Reply
Trying to figure if its worth while to fill my 55 gallon drum with corn or buy in the bags. Does anyone know how many pounds of corn a 55 gallon metal drum holds? Thanks,

If I remember right I had a plastic drum pretty close to 55 gallons and it held about 350-400 lbs.

That is with a funnel in the bottom of the drum. I use to use drum feeders.

Yep, it will hold almost 7 sacks of corn. What kind of prices are 'yall seeing? I saw some at a convenience store the other day for $7.49/50# sack. The deer will be rationed on my place this year if that is the price.

Thanks for the info. I priced a barrel of corn today at Wilk.coop. $37.50. $7.50 for a 50 lb. bag. About a $10 savings by the barrel if it holds 7 bags.

When I go to grain elevator to buy drums of corn it usually averages about 350 to 360 lbs per drum and thats shaking it and filling it completly full. If you don't shake it when you get home you will have 6 inches from top of drum.

Academy in B.R. has the bags (40lbs, I think) for $4.99. Last year they were less than $4.

If you know someone who works at Angola Prison ask them about getting bulk corn. I know several people that went in together on bulk corn last year. Cheap.....

A full 55 gallon drum holds around #325 pounds of corn. Bulk corn at Zenoh Grain elevator in Convent is currently around $170.00 per ton. With the use of corn for fuel the prices are only going to get higher. We have already cut our feeders back to feeding once a day in hopes of getting the deer to move during the daylight hours more. Zenoh also has bulk soybeans, rice bran and other items.

Give me a day or so and I'll give you the contact information you need. I can't find the business card with the contact information on it.I will get the current prices from my neighbor tomorrow. They usually sell bulk in super sacks. If you do not have any they will sell you one for I think $10 the next time you come back they will have your order filled and you just give them your empty sacks. I transfer from sacks to drums after I get home.

I use steel 55 gallon drums with plastic funnel insert from Academy, drum holds 300 lbs. Academy has 40 lb. bag for $ 4.99 and Wally World for $ 4.86. The super sack (2,000 lb.) bag at the grain elevator is $ 180.00. Be sure if you buy the bulk corn to sift it. The pieces of cob and debris can damage a timer type feeder. Also has a lot of dust, which can gum up the electric motor with our high humidity. By the time I sift and re-bag the corn (time is money), I'll just keep getting the clean bag corn. My 2 cents.
