rossi youth rifle

Reply
I was trying to sight in a rossi youth .243 today and had trouble getting the gun to group. I thought it may be the scope and changed that to a scope I knew worked and still had to the same problem. I noticed that the barrel gets extremely hot after a few shots. After the gun cooled it shot to a different point. Has anyone had a similiar problem? I was planing on shooting it again Sat a couple of times then letting it cool and repeat the process with a cold barrel.

I had the same problem with my son's .243 Rossi. I finally gave up on it and am only going to use the shotgun barrel. It shot all over the paper without any consistency. I am going to let him shoot my Browning .243 from now on. It's not worth letting him miss something.

Have the exact same problem. Three scopes, three different bullets, still wouldn't group. Sent it back to Taurus, and they sent it back saying that I needed to clean it after every use. I cleaned the dadgum think after every SHOT trying to get it to group. Had to use a whole sheet of plywood at 100 yds just to see where it was hitting. It's junk, academy's policy on gun returns is junk, and Taurus' service department is junk. Now that's just my opinion, but my 8 year old still doesn't have a shootable gun for this season thanks to those three entities.

From what I undrstand the Rossi guns are cheap because the barrels are forged with a really cheap steel. They are not held to a high standard. The cheap steel causes the barrel to change shape slightly shen its heated very little. Bottom line is what you get what you pay for.

Savage has the most accurate rifle out of the box. .243 or 25-06 for youth is also the way to go. Now Savage offers the accu-trigger which can be adjusted by the owner without breaking down the rifle.
Another key is once barrel starts to warm up, take time and let it cool back down before you try sighting it in. A warm or hot barrel will not produce any type of consistent groupimg what so ever.

I bought a .243 rossi for my nephew last year. Tried four different scopes and numerous bullets it would not hit the side of a barn. Tried to sell it and no one wants it. The pawn shop wanted to give me $15.oo for it.

thanks for the replies. The 22 barrel shoots great it's just a shame the 243 will not do the same. if anyone ever was able to get one to group I'd love to hear your technique.

Do not know what I did different from you but I Just sighted my sons 243 in last week and it did fine. Put the scope on and bore sighted it then shot it at 25 yards and had it hitting the bullseye in 4 shots then moved out to 100 yards and it was dead center but 8 inches high. 2 more shots and then I let my son take over and hit the 8" metal plate at 100 yards 4 out of 5 shots. Next weekend is the youth hunt hope it stays on target.

I have to agree with gobbler. I sighted in my son's 243 last week also. First time it was all over the paper. After realizing that the scope mount wasn't good and tight, the gun was on target after a couple small adjustments. He killed his first deer last year with this gun with a perfect shot of 75 yds. Hope he gets the chance at some horns this year.

glad to hear some positive reports on the gun. I'll check the scope mounts again and see what I can do with the gun Sat.

I suggest you remove everything off the barrel and start over. Make sure everything is good and tight. Also ensure you add some lock-tight to all of the screws so once it sets up the screws will not back out. My son shoots the 243 combo as well and we have no trouble at all.

Change ammo. I just hade the same problem with an Optima elite 7mm-08. Changed bases, rings. Shot and checked if the scope was holding zero with a bore sight. Was about to send it back. Was shooting 18" groups with rem. bullets changed to winchester now 1" groups. Some rifles do not like some ammo.

I agree with changing the ammo and also wait until the barrel cools down before shooting again. When you shoot a deer with the first shot you are using a cold barrel. Changing ammo will help drastically.

DE if you get it to shoot right, let me know what bullet your using. I tried winchester 100gr, and remington 100gr. This morning I went to Cabelas and bought a set of Weaver rings and mount for it. I let ya know how that goes next weekend.

son bought a 243 three yrs. ago--when he first tried to sight it in it would not zero in--got to looking and the scope mount had only about a thread and a half because the screws were to short--all i did was count-sink the scope mount so more threads stuck out and solved the problem--this may be your problem????

I purchased a NEF .243 for my 8 yr old daughter and put an aimpoint 42mm red dot on it. No guessing on the shot. I had it sighted in on the 4th shot @ 50 yds. She hit the bullseye 3 out of 6 times. She is left eye dominant, but the open red dot and no eye relief it allows anyone with any problem to put the dot on and fire. She loves it. My local gun shop talked me out of buying the Rossi and ordered me the NEF. They said they have had nothing but trouble with them.

Check out this product I purchased for my little girls .243. It brought the pull down from around 8 or 9 lbs to about 3 or 4. INCREDIBLE. I have purchased one for my shot-gun and rifle. Beats paying for high priced trigger jobs.

I owned on myself. We thought it would be a good gun with me just starting to deer hunt. I killed one deer with it(lost 2) but had trouble with it grouping ever since. The gunsmith could not even get it to group. Now I own a Remington 7mm-08.Get rid of the Rossi. I want ever own another rossi.

this is a very common problem when the barrel gets hot it tends to move more think of it as hot and cold steel which one is going to bend easier try two shaots and let it cool and then two more i rarely shot mine mone than 3 time before letting it cool

Nosler partition were not the answer. One shot would perfect the next shot 4 to 5 inches low then the next shot would be perfect. This went on for 6 shots till I quit.Funny thing was the shot were all inline left to right it just strung the shots up and down. I'll try winchester or remington ammo to see it that help. Has anyone tried a sims barrel vibration reducer.

I purchased the Rossi for my son's first rifle. Not only would it not sight in but would miss fire every few rounds. Sent it back to Rossi and on return it miss fired on the second shot. Composed a nice long letter to Rossi and they sent me a new gun. Sold it immediately. Bought him a Rem. mod. 700, .308 Problem solved !!!!
