.308 does the job for me. Shoots flat with good knock down power.

Have both a 30-06 and a youth model 7mm-08. Got the 30-06 when i turned 17, but still love to shoot the 7mm-08 unless i will be taking a long shot.

My 25 year old remington model 700 bdl 270 with a leupold 2.5-7. I can wipe a knats ass with it at 150 yards. Never lost a deer with it.

Cant go Wrong with a 25-06 one of the flattest shooting rifles there is.

That's the kind of question that gets silly on this site. Guess too many people on a high after this weekend with LSU and the Saints. The regulars are not showing up, go figure!!!

My 2 cents. any gun that
Is a 30 cal. or more
Accurately shoots heavy for caliber bullets and
has a good set of mounts and scope on it.

My choice, Ruger 77 MK II in 30-06

I had the opertunity to swithch to a 308 Tikka and passed it up. I got to thinking what other hard hitting caliber can you find a round for in an emergency (forgot your bullets). I can buy ammo for my ot six anywhere and everywhere! You can even get it at some country stores. Try that with a 280 or 25-06.

I like different calibers for different scenarios. Deep woods, I'll take a .308, but for potential long range powerline ROW shots, I like my 270 WM. You feel confident in a big bean field/wheat field like we hunt, that you can reach out and touch them with the 270 weatherby magnum. For flat shooting and pure knock down power, it's hard to beat. I'm sure some will say the 300 mags, and 7 mags, etc., and these are great too, but I love the 270 WM the most. It's just like some guys like blondes, and some like brunettes, or reds, just a personal preference.

My wife gave me a Browning A Bolt 300 WSM for an anniversary about 4 yrs ago.Thats one very bad boy.Every shot I have taken requires only a short walk to get the 4 wheeler to haul the deer out.Alot of people say its overkill but I never have had a deer thats too dead. Its like most guns;if you do your job it will its job.

If I am stalking, I love my Mossberg 20ga slug gun. Sitting in a stand I like my 308.

no need for an overkilling magnum. the .280 is great for any of the deer species in this country from couses deer to moose. beats the hell out the the grossly over rated .270 in every measurable category. an internet search is all that is needed for you to see my point.

Have shot 6 deer in last 2 years with a Browning .308 stainless steel with boss and composite stock. I had put a new scope three years ago, Leupold 3x9x50 and love it. The scope isn't the best available, but its been awesome and fit in my budget. Was looking for a .270 when I found this at a great deal at a close out sale, never regreted it once.

It's like what I said earlier, and what big steve just said. Different guns for different situations. We all have our preferences. All the calibers stated are good, and we have this same discussion in our hunting camp. The 30-06 guys swear by them, 30-30 guys say that is overkill and magnums are way overkill, but the .243 is underkill. and the .243 guys say it's perfect. To each his own. It goes back and forth. The most important thing is to get a gun that you like, and can shoot well. No matter the caliber, and it must fit you well, that is probably the most important thing of all because it effects everything else. I hate when I see small frame kids with 7 mag A-bolts with Boss systems. These kids can barely hold the guns up, but their daddy's send them out there anyway. Bad fit, and too much gun(kick) will equal a bad shot every time, I promise.

doesn't matter, its all about shot placement.you can drop'em with a .22 if you know how to place your shot.but to answer your question. .270 savage w/shepard scope shooting 140 grn. horndy. hits like a sledge hammer.

I shoot a 270 Win., but was quite impressed with the 12ga. slug gun that my son shoots. At close range (under 100 yds.) it should stop anything.
