Maurepas swamp wma?

IM wonder if any of yall go deer hunting in maurepas swamp? im thinking aobut going there this weekend jsut to check it out since its close to my house, and do i need a boat to get everywhere or is there already roads going through it? any help would be apperciated... thanks.

WHERE on the Maurepas? It's 60,000+- acres, isn't it?

Basically, I would NOT enter from a road, as everyone else will be doing same. Go in by pirogue or go devil or outboard to where ever it was you had in mind. Then, if you're man enough, walk SLOWLY through the swamp and look for deer. Patches of brown, something that looks like a bit of a deer, fur, antler, nose, tail, etc, but walk slowly covering maybe 100 yards in 45 minutes or so. Don't worry about looking for the proverbial "high ground", as the deer don't care whether they're up to their ass in water or not.

Be careful, you're bound to get wet with hip boots (bring a good walking stick with a "forked" end), but chest waders can be mighty hot in warmer weather or while walking the swamp. Nice if you want to sit down, though.

My friend did not believe me when I advised him to hunt like this. He wanted to sit up in a tree for hours. Killed a couple over the years that way, but once he started walking the swamp, he averaged 3-4 a year.

P.S. Watch where you put your hands, especially on sunny days. More cottonmouths in parts of that swamp than I have seen anywhere.

Wishin is right. There are numerous roads you can enter the management area on. But usually does the rest of the crowd not to familiar with the swamp. Unlike the post below, I recommend you find a spot and just sit and wait. There will be alot of people in the swamp tomorrow and the weekend and the deer will be moving. Also, watch out for the snakes like the guy said below. I went hunting Wednesday and saw four mocassins and stepped on two.

i was planning on going on the entrance from airline, and just go check it out liek sat. in mid day or sunday....

But after I thought about it, I'm not going walk around a swamp with a bunch of city boys sitting on deer stands with rifles wanting to shoot anything that moves!! I'm going duck hunting this weekend and then I'll deer hunt during the week!!

i forgot you can shoot a normal rifle over there... is there spots over there where its liek the spillway or is it all swamp?

it is all swamp, some deep and some shallow but nothing like the spillway.

think i need to go find a piroge first... lol
