Some of the responses to my last thread were very revealing. One guy actually said.....Why don't you call the number on the collar?....Wow!!! Why didn't I think of that?

The fact is, for years I've followed protocol in trying to deal with this problem. It doesn't work. This is not an isolated incident. It happens day after day. By the end of the season, the dog clubs have run there land and every piece of state land in the area, day after day, until all the deer have simply moved out of there. And I don't care what some people claim, when you put that much pressure on any area, day in and day out, the deer will seek areas that don't have as much activity. And that happens to be our property.

These dogs didn't accidentally wander onto our property. They were intentionally turned loose there since they have repeatedly ravaged their own property and all the state land in the area. They are simply out of productive places to run their dogs as a result of their own practices.

I AM SICK AND TIRED OF WORKING MY BUTT OFF AND PAYING HARD EARNED MONEY ON LEASES TO PROVIDE ENTERTAINMENT FOR THESE CRIMINALS AT THE EXPENSE OF MY OWN RIGHT TO HUNT IN THE FASHION THAT I CHOOSE.

And for those who have posted ridiculous responses such as...."stop crying", or "let's all just get along", I have to ask you.......

How is it any different than if I would show up at your house with a couple of dogs that your kids were scared of, and turned them loose in your yard, preventing your kids from playing outside. Would you simply tell your kids to play inside? What if those dogs tore up your garbage day after day? Would that be OK? Because that's what they do at our camp. What if you woke up in the morning and they were sleeping in the back of your truck and had crapped all in it? That's what they do in our boats.

If you don't mind, then give me your addresses, and I'll drop off the dogs I catch this weekend at your house, and while I'm there walking around your house shooting anything that moves, I'll look at you and say.....Hey buddy, I bet if these dogs ran a 150 class buck across your lawn you wouldn't complain.

This issue has nothing at all to do with whether or not YOU think you are doing me a favor by running a 150 class buck under my stand. Or whether or not YOU think your dogs aren't putting pressure on my property. That's NOT for you to decide.

DO ME A FAVOR......WHEN IT COMES TO PROPERTY THAT I PAY FOR, KEEP YOUR OPINIONS TO YOURSELF, AND DON'T DO ME ANY FAVORS. JUST KEEP YOURSELF AND YOUR DOGS OFF OF IT!!!!!!!!!!!

Now, that being said, I hope ALL of the hunter here have a good ending to the 2007-2008 season. Just do it responsibly, legally, and with respect for ALL the rest of us who enjoy the outdoors.

Did you just compare deer to kids?

Cooksomerice
I'm sorry to see that thread get taken off, I guess it wasn't good for the kids, but I'm glad you started this one. I hunt in Mississippi and Louisiana and the situation is just as bad or if not worse in Mississippi. The powers that be need to crack down on the doghunting issue or people will continue to take matters into their own hands, like shooting and poisoning, etc... Its just a travesty that the good are suffering for the bad. All that time in planning and planting, anticipation of getting a nice one, and not to mention all the money that's spent, for all of this to go down the drain, in hopes that perhaps things will somehow magically be diferent next season. The powers that be need to step up to the plate and start enforcing and creating new dog trespassing laws or this war will continue.

I beleive he was making an "analogy",not quite a comparison.

??? ???
Here they come.....

I used an analogy to convey my frustration. I did not compare deer to kids. I am comparing my (real) experiences with a (fictional) set of circumstances to see if the same standards (and comments) hold true in both situations.

Instead of trying dissect it and trying to discredit me, why don't you address the issue that I am talking about. The next comment will probably be about my bad grammar or spelling.

If you do not want other folks opinion then do not post on a public forum!!! And if you are pourposly holding other peoples dogs without trying to contact them, who is the criminal? There is a precedence in this state regaurding what you are doing!

Cutter, why do you say that he is"holding other peoples dogs"?

criminals
I don't hate dog hunters, I hate criminals. It just so happens that the place I have to deal with criminals is at our deer lease, and those criminals happen to be dog hunters.

Think about it.....criminals have been the reason that certain laws, policies, and regulations have been implemented on society.

Because of a handful of Arab hijackers, policies on airlines and at airports have been implemented in an attempt to prevent similar events from happening. Although I'm pretty sure it was illegal to hijack airliners and murder over 3,000 people prior to 911. (And no MossyOak, let me say before you even ask...I'm not comparing 911 victims to deer).

Because of "new research and statistics"(whether we agree with it or not) laws and regulations have been implemented on all levels of government, ranging from local (smoking bans, leash laws, motorcycle helmet laws, saggy pants laws, banning cell phones while driving, etc.), to federal (migratory bird laws, federal tax code, emissions standards, federal gun regulations, etc.)

The thing is, there are already laws on the books (like trespassing laws, leash laws, etc.) that "should" prevent people from turning dogs loose on your "private property", but they simply aren't enforced stiffly enough. And even if there were no laws, does it take a law to make people realize that it's not right? (Just shows the class of person I'm dealing with).

I guess what I'm getting at is that if the consequences don't out weight the crime, criminals will continue their activity and gladly accept the consequences. Since this problem has persisted for so many years, maybe it's time the state re-evaluates its laws, regulations, and policies as it relates to the issue of hunting deer with dogs.

the way i see it treat tresspassing dogs as though they were coyotes. the drop them off on the property they came from. they'll eventually get the picture.

The powers that don't
It is up to the particular state in question to regulate and enforce these laws you mention Cooksome, but it ain't happening, so something needs to happen or things are gonna continue to be outta hand. One thing that may happen is that hard working folks will start putting up taller fences to keep dogs out. Can you imagine the expense? All because of some who are just too darn selfish and ignorant to listen to reason.

You are right, this is a public forum, and as far as I know, there are no laws saying you have to click on this thread, snot wad. And I never said I had anyone's dogs. Also, I was asking for opinions on dealing with outlaws. Stop trying to find my mistakes. It's simple, talk about the issue or go somewhere else.

I Agree
Cooksomerice i agree and you are a better man than me because if i was sitting in a stand on a still hunting only area and had someones dogs CONTINUOUSLY run by me i would probably have to take them out. The owner of these dogs should be responsible to keep these dogs off your lease. the first time shame one him, a couple of times shame on you! If the owner cares little enough to send his dogs into someone elses land then take em and if he comes looking he is trespassing! Just my input, because i know how blood boiling it is to be in your situation

Dogs have sure ruined my lease. A couple of us that were bowhunting were seeing deer every hunt and were also seeing some nice bucks. Once the neighboring lease let their dogs loose, not much deer were seen and I haven't seen one shooter buck the whole gun season. I saw 3 shooters during bow season and that was in only 10 hunts.

i keep hearing about dogs on my lease i bet if you look back at history all your leases were dog hunted first fast forward rich still hunters come in and leased all the land and pushed the dog hunter to state land and small leases

I am not rich by anyone's standards. There are no laws saying that dog hunters can't lease land. Although several landowners are getting tired of the BS that goes along with leasing to dog hunters. And maybe there were dog hunters hunting the property decades ago, but just because they have been trespassing for decades doesn't mean that they can claim the land as their own.

I don't care if you still hunt or dog hunt, we ALL have to pay for private hunting rights. For years, landowners paid taxes on the land and assumed all liability for accidents on the property. The lease money they receive covers the cost of those expenses. And landowners would much rather have a responsible hunting club leasing it, insuring it, policing it, and PAYING FOR IT, than to have the general public doing whatever they want on it.

Man, I can't understand how some of you think that all still hunters are rich, all landowners are corrupt and in the pockets of politicians, and that everyone is out to get the poor little dog hunters. Yet you turn around and say that not all dog hunters are bad, and that I shouldn't lump you in with the stereotype. That's pretty slick....only Bill Clinton himself could do a better job of twisting it around and playing the VICTIM. Where have I heard this before? Oh.....now I remember.....that's what people like Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, John Edwards, and the rest of the "class warfare pimps" preach. And they are pretty effective at it. Maybe you guys should get those guys to represent you. Then you can really stick it to those nasty, profit mongering still hunters and land owners. While you're at it, why not go for broke. They can probably provide you guys with some pretty sweet social programs like food stamps and welfare. Why stop there? Let's declare all comments involving dog hunters, HATE SPEECH!!!! And outlaw "THE D WORD". Any dog hunter who gets arrested for trespassing will be exonerated due to "EXCESSIVE FORCE", "POLICE BRUTALITY", and "ABUSE OF POWER".

Victims?????? You guys are nothing more than the victims (in your own minds) of a response to your own actions. You want respect? Then act respectable. If you don't want to be stereotyped, then DON'T BE THE STEREOTYPE!!!!

There are some striking similarities between some of you guys and the class of person found in the New Orleans NINTH WARD!!!!!

Just what I would do...
Call the police. I am pretty sure it is still illegal to abandon an animal (cruelty). Then, if you can trace the dogs, sue the hell out of them. This is trespassing plain and simple. An owner of an animal is responsible for the acts of the animal. This is no different than them hunting on your property. Find a good attorney and sue them. If nothing else, you can sue them under a nuissance theroy based on the noise from the dogs and the fecal matter they will no doubt be fertilizing your lawn with. If the dogs are owned by a hunting club, all the better, sue the club and seize the land, you have just increase your property line. This is rediculous. I am getting sick and tired of driving down the road and finding dead dogs everywhere. If these "hunters" cannot maintain control of their animals then they do not need to have them.

ALL I WILL SAY ITS NOT THE DOGS FAULT. KILLING OR STEALING DOGS IS A LOT BIGGER FINE THAN A DOG TRESPASSING.
BUT ALL IN ALL IF I CATCH SOMEONE KILLING OR STEALING DOGS IT WILL BE TRIAL, JURY AND SENTENCING ON THE SPOT.
AND I HAVE NOT OWNED HOUNDS FOR TWO YEARS, BUT I AM CONSIDERING RAISING AND TRAINING AGAIN.
YOU MIGHT SAY I DON'T HAVE HOUND SO WHAT IS IT MY BUSINESS
I LET MY CLUB HAVE MY HOUNDS AND WE HAVE SEVERAL COME UP MISSING THIS YEAR.(8500 ACRE LEASE)
ALSO I HUNT FROM OCT.1--FEB.5, SO DON'T THINK I AM ONLY A HOUND HUNTER.
STILL HUNTERS OR STEAL HUNTERS (WHICH EVER YOU MIGHT BE)THINK YOU WILL HAVE THE BASIN FOR YOURSELF IF THE DOGS ARE CUT OUT. PERSONALLY I DON'T THINK YOU WILL HAVE ANOTHER PEACEFUL HUNT IF THE DOGS ARE CUT OUT.
JUST MY THOUGHTS.

We donít wake early, we drink all night, we wake up about 9:00 A.M., and by the time we leave itís almost 10:00 A.M. By that time all those still hunters are off their stands. We run those dogs where we darn well please, it usually last until about 3:00 P.M. Go back to the camp skin, cook and DRINK!! Tomorrow repeat!!!!

see????? sooner or later it comes out in all of them!!!!
A few of you guys are proving my point over and over again, and are too fricken stupid to know the difference.

One tells me, "We run those dogs where we darn well please",

Another one says, "STILL HUNTERS OR STEAL HUNTERS (WHICH EVER YOU MIGHT BE)THINK YOU WILL HAVE THE BASIN FOR YOURSELF IF THE DOGS ARE CUT OUT".

Another one thinks that because dog hunters have been trespassing on my land for decades, they should have some right to it.

And several others admit the they simply can't keep their dogs on their own property.

So, my question is......WHERE ARE ALL OF THESE GOOD, RESPONSIBLE, DOG HUNTERS THAT JUST WANT TO GET ALONG?

I have just changed my mind thanks to you guys. Just got off the phone with a buddy of mine, and he told me that there is a mysterious creature on our lease that seems to be eating deer dogs, and spitting out their collars. He says he's got proof. When I get back from the camp this weekend, I'll post some pictures of the collars. Oh, and of course, if I find any of the dogs, I'll call the number on the collar and return them right away to the LAW ABIDING hunters they belong to.

Hard Pill to Swallow!
I couldn't agree more. I have hunted in the Basin outside New Iberia for several years and had the same problem. Dog hunting is long steeped tradition, especially with swamp hunting cajuns. It was a never ending battle. I personally believe they pushed the deer so much they would of had much more success collectively still hunting. I then hunted close to Oakdale. Same problem. Another problem is locals will sell their land and know when you are and arent there and hunt as if they still owned it. I believe timber company district managers give unwritten permission to locals to do this for fear of bieng burned out. I was finally fed up with the politics of leasing and hunting in LA and I now hunt in Ala. I sometimes miss the heavy bucks of the Basin, but I do enjoy seeing deer all season long. If you are going to shoot dogs, and it's not their fault, a little word of advice, "Don't tell even your best friend. Just do it!!!"

SHOOT THE DOG!!!!
All I have to say is hunt with your dog, no problem. It comes by my stand, DEAD Dog !! just like that. I think it cost me .05 cents for a 9mm round, better than buying deer puppies, spending all that money on a little dog untill it is big enough to hunt. cheaper to buy bullets!!!
I can't tell anyone to do anything, and 2 wrongs don't make a right, but untill dog hunters meet us half way and hunt their property only, well I guess I put knoches on my rifle for dogs instead of deers. So I hope you'l have a lot of extra dogs because I got alot of ammo!!

I dont have an opinion about different peoples hunting tactics but I am curious how do you prevent dogs from running on your land other than shooting them? Dogs don't know boundries. They just do what they are trained to do. Run the deer up. Dog hunters get all defensive when someone says the are going to shoot the dogs if they run in front of them. My question is how do you prevent the dogs from going where they are not suppose to?

same old same --from the dog trespassers--i would love to own acreage surrounded by dog hunters--first i would fence it up with hog wire just high enough for a deer to jump it but to high for dogs to get over--guess what, the dog trespassers would be drooling to get at all the deer--OUTLAW DOG DEER WANT TO BE HUNTERS--

I went this past weekend, with my 12yr. old son, to have a good time watchin deer and maybe shoot one. When we came back to the camp at mid-day,one of the other members had a dog with him. We called the # on the collar, owner on the way. Owner showed up,thanking us, explaining how this dog had been missing since opening weekend. My son asked the owner how he had left his dog to get in this condition!(Can you say skin and bones??)Owner had no response except, 'that's how it goes with dogs, sometimes u get em back, sometimes u don't!' How do you explain that mentality??

This is ridiculous....the dogs do what they are trained to do..don't shoot them i know the frustration but keep the dog and call the owner and straighten it up with him. you pay for the land not the other person so call him out and tell him to keep his things off of your property..best way to deal with it. and you others out there I'm not saying its a dog runners fault or anything but take care of it at the lease at the correct time. Rice has every reason in the world to be pissed and the people who get on here and talk and talk and talk are really getting old so why don't you all take a step back and realize how ignorant some of you sound.

I am not a deer hunter, but what seems easy for this bad situation you are in is to:

Caring a dog box and pick the dogs up. I am sure the is probably a breed specific rescue or just use a pound out of that area.

Then take the collars and put a little blood on it either call the owner and say you found his dead dog or leave it were they will find it.

Another option is sell the dogs. I sure you can put and ad in the paper and sell them for 40 bucks quick.

I THINK ONLY WORTHLESS TRASH WOULD SHOOT A DOG FOR DOING SOMETHING THAT IT DID NOT KNOW WAS WRONG.

I am on the fence about shooting the owner who puts the dog that situation.

I think if they get enough bloody collars they will get the idea.
