bandit
Dude that is not cool, I would have been very ticked off to kill a banded bird and have turned up missing that quick. Hell everytime I loose a bird I wonder if it might have been banded. Was hunting the marsh a couple of years ago and a buddy hit a greenhead that flew off about a 1/4 of a mile before it went down, he sent his dog which I did't think would find it, well it did and the bird was banded.

Nutria
My hunting buddy kept losing birds. He would live the dead ones floating and pick up on the way out. When he went looking for them he found chewed up buddies. He latter saw a Nutria run for one of the chewed up buddy..

Nutria
Nutria rats are vegetarians and wouldn't eat meat if they were starvin. Not likely a coon either,I was thinkin more along the lines of an owl or hawk.

coon is probably the culprit
man that is awesome that you found your band! On my last duck hunt a couple of weeks ago the water was way down and the pond was 50% mud flat. An hour into the hunt a raccoon came out about 100 yards to our left and was just foraging around. He stayed out there for the next hour or so while we shot ducks but kept coming closer and closer. Before we knew it he grabbed a dead grey duck that was floating in the pond and started to run for the cane. I shot behind him so he would let the duck go but that didn't stop him. The next shot was at his head when he was about 1 foot from going into the grass. Long story short, coons eat ducks!

LUCKY DOG
That is one lucky dog you got. Good thing you found that jewelry. The next option was to start checking coon poop for duck bands!!!

banded bird
Greenheadkiller,
Just out of curiosity, when you call in the band number; let us know where the duck came from. Where was it banded?

What luck!
Congrats on getting your band back.

I lost a great looking drake widgeon a few years ago to a coon. We piled up the limit of birds in the blind and went out in the pirogues to get the decoys. When we got back, one bird was missing- my widgeon.

I knew it was a coon because we had ran him away from the blind earlier in the hunt. I found some feathers in the marsh, but no other sign of the coon or the bird.

Also, last Saturday, we lost two birds off of the water. The wind blew them across the pond. My friend in the next blind saw one get picked up by a hawk. We have seen several hawks hovering in the area the last two seasons and suspected they they had stolen some other ducks. This time it was confirmed.

While no one saw what happened to the other bird Saturday, there were two otters in the area and we suspect they had some gray duck dinner.
