Mixed up duck

Reply
A few weeks ago I killed an interesting duck that was flying with a big bunch of Wood Ducks. They came in and lit and my son noticed that something was different about one of them. It's got a Mallard drake head and chest. The back and tail feathers are totally all wood duck. I guess I'll be going back to the taxidermist.

Did you happen to kill it around Caney Lake. I had a couple of mixed pairs of wood ducks & mallards that stayed on the lake for a couple of years. The wood duck drake would run any green head off that came near his mallard hen.

It was shot north of Tallulah, LA.

Would it be Mallard drake or Wood duck Drake . How would it count in a days limit?

it's a very unique looking duck. it should make an excellent mount. and who cares if it is a hybrid. you'll probably never kill another one like it.

Nice bird, I've killed about 5 mallard 'hybrid' ducks in the last three years. They breed with any ducks, that is why you see so many mixes in the park. I guess you count it as a mallard!?

I guess I was kinda lucky that the mallard or wood duck issue didn't come into play that day. However, it could easily present a problem to the fish cops. Especially if you saw it one way and they saw it another. I don't know how they'd handle it.

when you kill any mix of hybrid duck, i was told by a federal game warden it counts as "other species" so you can legally kill 6 hybrids a day of any mix species in louisiana
