Go Devil foam???

Reply
I have an 2002 go devil 18x56 that has foam in the front, sides, and floor. Anybody ever removed it? If so what has been your experience with it?

Hey BR, I have pretty much the same rig. I have seen guys take the foam out of the sides to make gun boxes, pretty nice. I have the urge to do it, just never have. The foam is in there to make the boat USCG approved for recreational use and to keep it from sinking all the way to the bottom. So, definitely something to think about. Although, 90% of the time, I run in 6" of water.

I had someone with Godevil tell me at one of the sportsmans shows last year that after the boat is 3 or 4 years old, removing the foam from the floor will drop probably 100 lbs from the weight of the rig. He said that over time the foam will absorb water and hold it. He said just to grind off the pop rivets and remove the sheet that is the floor. Get something to scrape the foam out like a shovel and re-rivet the floor back. Should noticeably improve the performance. I plan on trying it before next hunting season.

I have a small Go Devil duck skiff and I could sure use the extra room. I'm looking to put a hatch in the bow so I can remove the foam and make that a storage compartment.

I removed the foam from the floor of my 16' Godevil last year. You will need to either put some 1/2" treated plywood or thicker aluminum floor because the metal that comes with the boat will not support your weight without the foam.

Over time the foam will hold water. I know from first hand experience. Don't mess with it unless your boat is 5-6 yrs old.
