rio grande cichlid

I know that city park is loaded with these rio grande perch. Has anyone ever eaten one of these. They are practically catching these things on bare hooks. I'll try to eat one of these, but if anyone has any feedback, I'll take it.

The Rio Grande cichlid is a fine fighter, and easily caught. It is considered good table fare. The Texas state record was caught in the South Llano River in 2001 and weighed 1.59 pounds.

I have eaten them and they are just like perch. They are bad for the bluegill population. WLF had a program to try to get rid of them if I am not mistaken.

Use 1/2 a worm, small hook #8 I think and a small cork.
Easy to catch all over city park. During the City Park rodeo I think (don't quote me) one group caught over 100 in a day.
Great to teach kids to fish.

You got it. City park has asked that any rio caught, NOT be returned to the water. During the tournament, they did create a group catagory for the largest stringer caught. I have heard of people using worms, crickets and even white bread, balled up on the hook. One guy told me he landed one, took it off the hook and laid his pole down to get another cricket and another one, hit the bare hook not but 2 or 3 feet from the bank. If these guys are indeed edible, then I may have to do my part and put a dent into there city park populace. Fun Fun Fun. This would be a great way to introduce a youngster to some fast and fun fishing.

Yep, at the city park rodeo, Team Camo caught 961 rio grande cichlids. Even if you don't want to eat them just throw them on the back as someone else said they are bad for the bream populations. I tried taking my little cousin out by the pavillion with the lions and couldnt get a bite using worms. The hooks may have been to big or maybe I just wasn't holding my mouth right, but if anyone wouldn't mind sending me an email letting me know a spot in the park that has a few of them I would greatly appreciate it. Or just any tips that could help me out. Thanks a bunch yall
