For me, yes. For you, no. But, it just depends on the hunter. Now is he too young? By the size of the bases and rack, body size, and a very poor educated guess, I would guess a yearling. In that case, yes, too young. Even for you. :)

Public land bow buck. They have a four point on one side restriction where i killed him and he has four points on the left side so no not to young. He met the requirments and he paid for it and i would do it again in a heartbeat..

Screw haters? Screw me? Buddy, you don't know me. Widowmaker asked a question, to which I replied with a smiley face, more so as a prod at him. Now, next time I direct something to you, you will have the priviledge of conversing with me or commenting about what I have said. Until then, speak when spoken to.

Widowmaker, I didn't say he wasn't legal, or didn't have enough points, only that he looked as though he was a yearling. The intention of the 4 on one side restriction you are referring to is to limit the take of yearlings. This looks to be one of those deer that slipped through the cracks and met the criteria without intention. Regardless of size I say hammer away, provided it isn't a yearling buck, and not so much as for what size rack he has, but for the overall benefit it will do to the herd to hold off on those yearling bucks. Some have differing opinions, such as duck, who feel that we should shoot everything into oblivion, regardless of what it may do to the future of our herd because they have very selfish, self centered attitudes that everythng in this world belongs to them to use as they see fit. At one point, I imagine I was the same way. I think we all were there once. But, I know also that remaining status quo will only serve to ensure that we will repeat the past...

You're right. I don't get the priviledge of hunting public land, such as in a WMA, with a 2 week rifle season and the remainder bow season. The public land that I hunt, and that surrounds my private land is state land, which has a 60 DAY rifle season, complete with dogs, no check stations, and more night hunters than you can count. I sure do wish I could hunt some of that public land you talk about, cause the kind I hunt SUCKS!!!

Now Chad you dont have to get all upset. Its just that everytime anyone posts a deer that you would not kill you have to throw your 2 cents in about how small it is. I have seen you do it in about 5 posts on LA sportsman. I pesonally would not want to know you because I would never want someone like you in my deer camp. I will also comment on any thing you have to say because this is a free country and free forum so go cry to someone else

Wow! Ask an honest question...get an honest answer...Get Hammered.

Would I shoot it? Probably not. Do you have the right to shoot it? Absolutely! Is this one too small? Evidently not because it was killed. Nothing wrong with that at all. BUT it would have been a real nice one in 2 more years.

It's sort of like catch and release. If you keep them all and everyone else does the same, there won't be many big bass out there. But there will still be a lot of small ones if that makes you happy.

Go back and read those posts again. On the original post that widowmaker was getting hammered over about the small deer, I was the one that said a doe was a doe was a doe, 30 pounds or 100 pounds, so to not let the old school method of thinking get in the way when you are talking about shooting does....for a purpose....Shooting just to pull the trigger at everything that moves is where I draw the line, though, and feel that grown men should act like grown men. I do make alot of comment, though, about protecting deer and urging guys to allow deer to grow past yearling status, simply because I know the benefits and know that we must all do something, in the long run, to make sure that we are not the last generation of users. I like to plan for the future. If that is wrong, go ahead and make a special topic about how mean 'ol Chad insults people about shooting small deer. It won't hurt my feelings a bit.

Widowmaker, one thing is for sure. Like what my opinions are or not, and whether I like yours or not, ask questions, and you will get honest answers. I have been doing it on here for quite some time, and have had the same stance from the beginning. You understand that, and would not ask the questions if you didn't want answers. Others can't handle that, and that is unfortunate....

You forgot to mention all the 'Hoot' drivers on the State Land in your area. They're out there in droves! LOL..

Hoot drivers? All this time I thought thems was owls.....

I guess the next thing you're gonna tell me is the ones who are rabbit hunting in October with 30.06's really don't reload all their own bullets and have them packed with fine shot either huh???

I'm talking about the boat loads of orange vests that stomp the woods down and run everything out.
Reply
   Chad D
I know Dee, I was kidding around. But, there ain't many of them with orange vests...

One of the last ones we caught had a brown carhart jumpsuit on with no orange...or any other color on...whatsoever. It was also on an either sex day. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that he was a project exile violator (felon with a gun) trespassing on DMAP property, with no hunting license, no drivers license, and plug removed from his shotgun. LDWF wouldn't come out to handle him (when they had to come out for DMAP lands). Iberville Sheriff's office eventually took the fellar on his way. We do get some interesting guys round them parts....

I forgot too HOW we found him. One of our members climbed up into his 20 foot boxstand only to open the door and find this guy sitting in his seat looking at him. He bout came down the hard way.....

And I agree, there are some interesting folk around there..

.... is much too nice of a term for some of these folks. They also like to put up DMAP signs on state land in what they consider 'their' spots. You would think LDWF would get the hint when it's the same boat tied to the same tree every morning.

Chad, just curious, were you at your camp on Saturday, I passed what I am pretty sure is your place and saw two boats there, a big white bass boat, and a small bateau were tied up out front.
Reply
   Chad D
I have definitely seen signs on state land on our side too. You hunt the spillway right? I think I have seen where you said that is a problem for you all over there as well.

Yes, I was at my camp on Saturday. The big white bass boat was mine. Should have been a couple fellars holdin the boat when you passed??? Couple new memebrs......

You pass that way often? If so, stop by and have a brew or two if you catch us there one night. I will be staying down there a couple days next week.....

Chad, I hunt the same side that you are on. Mostly state land off of the intracoastal. I am fortunate to have access to private land for my deer hunting in Ethel, so most of the hunting that I do down your way is for ducks and squirrels. Several years back, I knew an ex-member of your club (we worked at the same place at the time), I saw his boat there one afternoon and stopped in for a beer with him. I don't recall meeting you personally.

Chad gives an honest answer and he gets pounded. Why ask the question'Is he too small' if you dont want honest answers.Public land or not a buck is a buck is a buck.He is a 1 1/2 old deer that needs to grow up just like alot of people on this site.I dont hunt public land because this is mostly what is killed.Anyone that puts in a little time can go shoot a yearling or a spike wherever they hunt.I grew up hunting Saline(Dewey Willis) and shot deer there too so stop thinking that public land hunters are better then those that pay to hunt private leases.I put my money where my mouth is.I had to stop fishing to be able to afford to hunt private land.It all depends on how bad do you want to hunt an area that has antler restrictions.

Were you the guys (two of you in the boat) in the bato that idled past the camp? I remember seeing someone pass around that time (I was only there for a minute or two while the other boat was there, just long enough to make sure it was one of our members). Believe ya'll may have shot a snake or two down the river??

Anyway, being on that side, where are the signs you were talking about that are posted with DMAP that is state land? Only know of a few properties down there that are DMAP, and think I may know where you are talking about....

Who was the member that was in the club you knew?

   TBOY
The property that I am referring to is the big island between Jack Miller's and Bayou Sorrell in Grand River. A small piece of that island, closest to Jack Millers's is posted DMAP, but, to the best of my knowledge, the remainder of the property is state land. There is a two story camp across the intracoastal from the island. Is this part of y'all lease as well? Louis Lecoq was the fellow I knew (hope you don't hold that against me). My dad and I have been doing our part in keeping the snake population in check.

thanks for keeping those snakes in check!! Those suckers are bad down there...

The camp you are talking about does not belong to us. Tommy Scruggins has that lease you are talking about. As far as I knew that island is supposed to be all state land, but I may be mistaken. I thought that was goat island, which to my knowledge was all state land??? Maybe I can pull up the state land map later on here and see to make sure....Don't pass that way much, cause we always go up grand river to access pat's bay instead of heading through the intercoastal and cutting back at sorrel.....

Definitely won't hold that aginst you. Louis is a good guy, and just got out 2 years ago.....Some issues were had with family and the like, and it came a good time for him to spend closer to home...
Reply
I used to hunt w/Scruggins. The point of the island(Goat Island)where the splits at is posted. The rest is State Land for a mile or two. Then it's posted again.
State land runs adjacent to his lease. It ends at Sullivan's Lake. The back side of Sullivan's lake is school board (public) land. At least 10 years ago it was.... my nephew took a nice 9pt back there 2 years ago.
Reply
   Chad D
it still is state land back of sullivan. As a matter of fact, it runs up to within a couple hundred yards of my property. Caught our fair share of tresspassers out of that canal!! :)

Does your nephew hunt with Tommy? A couple years ago one of the guys that hunts with him shot a nice deer back off of that area and it ran onto our property. He asked us if he could come and look for it, and of course, we gave him permission to cross. Didn't find out if he ever found that deer......

Didn't know goat island had leased sections on it, but again, i rarely ever pass that way.

I pulled up the state land maps and dee is right. The point of goat island is leased, and then state land, and then leased and then state land again.... Here is the link to the map for the whole area...

Dee--Thanks for the info, I never knew the proper name for the island.

Chad--I was just joking about Louis, if I wouldn't have thought he was an ok fellow, I wouldn't have stopped in for an adult beverage with him.

I don't know any of the fellows in that Scruggins camp. I got into a shouting match one morning a few years back with one of the guys in that club, seems he felt the state land that borders their property was part of their lease as well. Takes all kinds.

No, he doesn't. I'm not sure of the details on it.
It's my bro's step-son. It was a pretty deer though.
I have the paper version of this map. Never knew I could view online. Thanks!

That is the beauty of this sytem. If you don't want to read what we are saying, simply don't click the link that says 'read more'. But by your clicking the link to see what we are saying, you either 1. really do care what we are saying, or 2. you just enjoy tormenting yourself.

I swear I don't understand what gets people in a huff so much on this site about reading stuff that they don't want to read. If you don't have the time it takes to roll that little button on your mouse the 1/4 turn it takes to skip over this post (or any other one for that matter that may pertain to a subject that you don't particularly care about such as dogs, etc.), then you likely don't have the time to be on here anyway, and should be doing something more productive!!
