Go-Devil problem

Reply

Hello everyone.I am having a problem with my 23hp Briggs on my go devil, and was hoping some of you may be able to help me out.My engine is only three years old and has never given me any trouble.Towards the end of last season it strted acting up on me.The motor will run great on the trailer. When i put the boat in the water and start my run it runs perfect, but after about 10 minutes or so it starts to slowly lose power almost to the point of stalling out.If it does stall it starts right back up takes off very quickly but almost imediately loses power.I am dumbfounded as to what it could be,because like I said I ran it on the trailer for about thirty minutes this morning and no problem at all.Went put her in the water and just like clockwork after about 5 minutes started acting crazy. So apparently it only does this after it warms up a little and when it is under a load in the water.I know of at least two other people right now that are having the same problem. The season is quickly approaching so I really need to work this out.Any replies will be greatly appreciated. Thanks,Denny

Go-Devil problem
I have never heard of one acting like that, save yourself some head achs and bring it to Go-Devil. I had to have the shaft replaced during hunting season they got my boat back to me in a few days and fixed a couple of other minor problems while they had the motor.

My first suspect when an engine starts losing power under load as you describe is a dirty fuel filter or collapsing flexible fuel line. Don't know the GD fuel delivery set-up, but that's where I'd check.

Go Devil Issues
I have an 18HP Brigs and have have a few hick ups also.
1st-use stabuild fuel stablizer mixed with gas-
2nd-Install water separator in fuel system
3rd-Gas tank must have a good vent cap
4th-make sure your choke linkage is not vibrating open
5th-Take it to Warren Coco to repair at GO Devel

I know you probably checked but, cleaning the air filter on a regular basis is a must if you are in a dusty area.

All have made good coments. I would also check linkage on the governor could also worn down, broken, disconnected, or dirty and sticking. when putting under load if the gov. don't function you will not get your power. I would do a good cleaning and check all filters, and linkages, and do a general tune-up.

motor problem
I described that same problem to the service guy at duvic's boats when my 27hp s/d was about 1 year old. He said it was the PCV valve. It took a while to get it back due to how busy they were after Katrina, but it has ran fine ever since. Always ceck fuel filter and line for ant restrictions and keep a spare filter with you.

I had similar problem last year. I brought it Go Devil in Baton Rouge Proplem was the drive train needed replacement. The lower bushing was heating up and seising the shaft.

high speed jet on carburetor is plugged
i have had this problem before. your high speed jet on your carburetor is plugged. on the carburetor, you will see a bolt on the side. remove it and you will have access to unplug the jet with a needle. then, spray some cleaner through the jet and carburetor to clean it out. then put the bolt back on.

vent

go-devil problem
Also had same problem. Mine ran fine 3/4 speed but when went to full throttle it would die out. It was the fuel pump. I did not know the round black thing that my hose hooked up to was a fuel pump, but had it changed and never had a problem running full speed again. Hope this helps.

Carbs, Check the carbs!
I had the same problem with the same 23hp motor on my Muddbuddy. It sounds like there is a problem with your carb and you really should get used to cleaning it before every season. I made the same mistake one season and faught it the whole year. The problem (as I was told) is that the Carbs get gummed up when it is not in use for long periods of time. I am not, by any stretch, mechanically inclined and found it to be quite easy to do on the first time. The key I found is to use lots of carb cleaner on all of the jets and then follow that with a good shot of air from a blower on an air compressor. If you don't have one, take it to a buddy that does. Use the carb cleaner, follow with air, then use the carb cleaner again. Its easy and the most logical place to start. I also put a raycor water seperator on mine to help with the trash problems. Oh yeah--Please put a towel down in your cowling to make sure you don't drop and lose parts to your carb. It will save you a lot of head aches later. Good luck!

Get you a water separator filter. I keep my fuel tank covered and still get some water in my gas. I had the same problems till I put the separator on and I keep my tank full when I am not using the boat.

Here is the solution
I just fixed mine. 23briggs. I had water/condensation in the tank. I changed my fuel pump $29.00, bought a new primer bulb $7 and dumped/changed the gas. My motor was stalling out also after a few minutes at high rpm's. You got water in your fuel pump/line/tank, trust me, it doesn't take much to screw ya up.
