Sherburne camping trip

Reply
I am considering taking my girlfriend and her little brother on a camping trip to Sherburne to do some fishing, squirrel hunting, and camping. Trying to do some research, I have never been and dont know exactly where to begin. I understand that there are two camp sites. Which site is ideal to be closest to the boat launch and good hunting areas? If anyone who fishes/hunts there often could chime in with some help I would love to hear some tips. Really looking forward to this trip and would like to make it a good one. Planning on going in the fall. Thanks

The link in the first post will provide you with some good general information about Sherburne. Read that information and other information about using WMA property.....so you will know all the regulations.

As for camping, I would suggest using the campground up by the headquarters building. There are 2 nearby boat landings just to the south of the campgrounds. For "good" hunting areas....for squirrel hunting, there are many areas. I suggest you go there [before your Camping Trip] and talk to the game wardens and get there suggestions. Then go do some scouting to hopefully find some areas that you would like to hunt or fish.

Using a boat will get you away from many of the hunters that park along the roads and walk in to hunt.

In Oct., the mosquiotes can be very bad.....so be prepaired. Also, check the dates of the Youth Deer hunt because you can not go then.

make sure you save room in your limit for a black fox squirrel or two. I know guys who have limitted out on nothing but black squirrels there.

If you are planning a trip to Sherburne in the Fall, I suggest you go as early in the morning as possible. It gets busy during the hunting season. If you bring a boat and plan to launch at the public landing next to the levee, be careful if the bayou is real low because the boat ramp is not maintained and is broken up at the end of the ramp. There is another boat launch at a private campground on the other side of the Big Alabama. Ronnie Adams runs the campground and the boat ramp. I heard he only lets campers use his boat ramp. I strongly suggest you make a trip over there to check out the ramps and campground before going in the Fall. If you plan to hunt Sherburne, you may want to check out Bayou Close which runs into the Big Alabama. A co-worker hunts there and has killed a lot of deer and squirrels.

Hope I have been some help. Good luck.

Gerald, when you say get away from the hunters by boat are you suggesting land the boat on the side of the bayou, get out, and go hunting from there? We will be going to big alabama in a couple of weeks to fish and scout out the grounds, sounds like it would be a good idea. I have read up, and Im still unclear about the times that are legal to squirrel hunt. I have always thought that on mgt land, you can only hunt small game around deer season? I am still learning here. Thanks for all the help.

If you ride in the boat, you can get to property that is not accessible by walking from the roads. Using a boat, you can hunt areas that get less hunting pressure and therefore you are more likely to see more squirrels.

If you plan on going to Sherburne campgrounds on opening weekend, don't expect a quiet evening in the camper or tent. It's humanity on parade.
