cabelas closing?

I keep hearing a rumor that Cabelas is going to close after Christmas and become a shipping and receiving location. Anybody else heard this from a credible source?

I asked about it this weekend at the store and they said they had no knolage of the store closing.

heard it was closing a week from Today and will be a distribution center...I'll try to find out more...

I also heard gas was going to $5.00 overnight...hahaha

I cut and pasted a couple of events ranging into October. My guess would they will be open for a while....Thank God

Well I'll tell yall this much...I go to Cabelas A LOT and there's never hardly anybody in there...especially during the week...I live in Acension and quite a few people told me they heard the same thing Yesterday so I don't know.......

I am thinking that is just another sign of an unstable economy..high fuel=folks not driving to shop..Their $$$is spent on getting around and not on new gear aat cabelas, bass pro, mom and pop stores, etc...man, i hate to hear this rumor.

i start training for a new job there thursday. i hope it isn't true, but again, i think they picked out a really bad location for that store.

I work there. I know how much business is done there every week. It ain't true.

Good afternoon Gentleman! I have a close friend that is a manager with Cabelas, and he assures me that this rumor is completley false. It appears as though someone is trying to get a rumor started that has no validity to it. Cabela's has had a a strong year according to him, with the exceptions of the high gas prices and hurricanes affecting them, as it has for everyone else, but never in Cabela's history has a store ever closed, and according to him, they love their Louisiana location and the people of this state. As a matter of fact, they are investing more money than ever to this store because it is based in the heart of "Sportsmans Paradise", and he says that this is their "store of the south". He says that they love thepeople here in Louisiana, and have big plans for the future of this store. They are constantly tweeking their product lines to accommodate the needs of hunters and fisherman from here in Louisiana. I have to say that I am a loyal customer of Cabelas, and everytime I walk into that store, I am greeted with a smile and a hello. They might not always have everything that I want in the retail store location, but they have always been able to order it for me and get it to me promptly. The service their sets itself apart form any of the other stores in the area.

Yes, you do get a smile and a hello when you walk inside. Shortly followed by heres an ap for our credit card. I have been inside the store on three different occasions. First time the store had not been open very long and was packed. Second time, on a Friday apx a mth ago, store had about 20 people shopping TOTAL!! I waited at the archery counter for 30 min just to look at the archery catalog to see if they had a specific ground blind. I finally gave up. From there I walked the mere 75 feet to the shoe dept where I waited for apx 15 min to try on a pair of boots. Then another 10 min to try on a different model. There was one person working the department and there was one other customer. At the archery counter there was one guy who was running around like a chicken with his head cut off doing NOTHING!! The last time, and I do mean LAST time, I had the pleasure of shopping there was 2 weeks ago again on a friday. Gun counter this time. One lady at register helping one person and NOONE to show firearms to anyone. Finally after waiting about 10 min I walked to the register and she called a guy out the back. His responce was, in an elivated tone, Where is Bubba (no thats not his name but I can't remember)? She and the dude from the back now argue about where said guy has went. Finally the guy comes all the way out the back, basically stood in door way the entire argument, and in a huff asks what I need. I looked at the rifle and a scope then left to check prices at other stores. After looking around and now driving back to Alexandria, I decided to get the gun from Cabela's. I make 10, yes 10, phone calls to have them order the caliber I wanted. When I finally got a guy on the phone does he take the order or tell me how to place it? NO!!! He takes a message and will call me back. The next day same thing 10 calls and a guy wants to take a message. I requested to be transfered to the store manager. Guess what I get???? VOICE MAIL!!!!!! Left a message there and two weeks later I still havent gotten a phone call from them. NO MORE CABELA'S FOR ME.....Service sucks!!!!! I am glad to say that I did order my gun from a local shop in Pineville. So Cabela's there went 1,200 in sales and apx 2000 every year from me.

I am sorry I have to agree with Leisure time. IMO, if this Cabela's is to make it they need to revamp, quickly! There is something about this store I just don't like, the bass pro in Pearl blows it away by a mile, service, selection and atmosphere. The Gonzales Cabelas has been a huge dissapointment for me.

I went to Bass Pro Shops in Denhim Springs last Friday and it was dead with no customers too. I was suprised at how few people where in there.

I love the Cabela's that I have been to (Kanas City & Sioux Falls) and thought it was the bomb, but if there is an Academy closer to me that carries what I need then this is where I will go to buy my hunting stuff.

PS: I will always buy my fishing rods from Academy. Hard to beat Academy's "Break a rod and they will replace it with no questions asked policy".

wow, i was actually anticipating a weekend trip over to cabelas to shop for a gun for my wife, but after hearing all of this, i'm not so sure i'll waste my time, although i don't know how much better academy is.. everytime i've been in there it seems like all they have are youngster's behind the gun counter.

Depending on what kind of gun you are looking for Academy may or may not have it. When I was looking for my rifle Academy only had 2 bolt action rifles total. I am not sure what area your in but I would look at all the manufactuer websites find what you want and call around stores to see if they carry the one or two models you want to look at in person before your purchase. I'm not gonna tell you not to go to Cabela's, they did have alot of new and used guns for sale. I will simply say if your going there for service plan on being let down. On that last trip that I wrote about my Third time to the store was actually a two part trip. I went two times in one day. I did not mention that on the 2nd trip of the day when I went back to the gun counter a guy was looking at a Weatherby. He didn't really feel like the action on the bolt was smooth. So Mr. Cabela's "Outfitter" that showed me the gun I wanted to see. The same one that was in a huff. Was helping this guy out. He takes the gun from the guy puts the gun up to his shoulder and works the action the fastest and hardest, I can't stress those two words enough, that he can. Looks at the gun, hands it back and shrugs. His comment "looks ok to me....might need a little oil". Well the guy didnt buy the gun that he had basically just put through more abuse then I would have in a year. He got a differnt model. If you do go...and they guy thats gonna help you is sorta short and stocky. Has a strange I have smelt too much gun oil look. DONT LET HIM HELP YOU!!!

Let me say this, the Gonzales Cabela's does have a very nice whitetail exhibit.

Before you go, go on line and check out things you're interested in and call them to see if they have it, if they don't they can order it for you.

Again, they are currently weak in the service department so don't expect good or knowledgeable service, yet.

I went back and brought my camera and took pics of some mighty fine deer to drool over.

I know a lady the went to Cabela's on Saturday. She found a used gun that she wanted. She tried to deal with the salesman but he said that he could not go down at all. She brought her husband back to the store Monday and bought the gun for $50.00 less. Make sure you go for this purchase, so not send her. IT IS STILL A MAN'S WORLD AT CABELA'S

You can't expect much help from minimum wage, I can care less what you want or need, employees. When you shop at these type big box stores, you best not ask to many questions. This is where the mom and pop stores usually excel. They may be higher priced, but you get service in return and they do care and want your business.

I may just be lucky? The local shop that I have, though limited on in stock items, will BEAT any price I find. I don't even have to ask. When I ordered my Rem mdl 700 Buckmasters edition, haven't picked it up yet cause I am out of town, I looked at scopes as well. He looked at the one I wanted and it was in his catelog for 450 but instantally said he could beat it. I ended up getting a different model. Nikon Monarch 4 by 10 by 50 BDC recticle for 399.00 beat that Cabela's. I didn't even ask him to come off the 470.00 listed on the box he just did it. Also I was looking at cameras there on a previous trip he knocked off 40 bucks on it before I even picked up the camera to look at it. Louisiana Archery in pineville. No I don't work there....just think that great service and knowledge should be rewarded.

I do think I told all you guys back a couple of years ago about the "attitude" of Cabela's in Gonzales, and that after insulting ME after I made a whole weekend to stay in B.R. and speak there for them for FREE, that I would write letters and email to "change" their attitudes. I did that, and, to no avail, they totally failed and will subsquentially fail altogether as a retail outlet.

Went there for the grand opening, they wouldn't sell me a gun due to the stupid sticker on the back of my drivers license had wore off. My wife had to buy the gun.
My trolling motor bought from Academy (three trips old) went out last weekend. Brought it back to Academy and they replaced it free of charge without a reciept. No need to say where I shop now.

I got ripped on a bushnell range finder from cabelas. I won't even waste my gas driving there. Everyone tells me how nice it is and they have everything, well guys it cost to have everything. I can get everything I need from Academy or Walmart (which happens to be close by and across the street from one another). The range finder had a piece of debris inside the lens and when I called they could care less, sent it back for refund, but got burned on the shipping. Hope they do close, pieces of garbage!!

Well guys, I have been there several times and all my trips were excellent. I have been ordering from there catalogs for years and those times have been fine too. I know everyone has different experiences. I have great trips to academy and some bad ones. Academy just does not have the selection that Cabelas does and some of the products that wal-mart has are not wuite up to par.

Nothing but good experiences, both in person and over the phone. I bought an expensive pair of waders from Herter's. Had a problem with them after one season, called and recording told me they were out of business, but that Cabela's had purchased their remaining inventory and were handling customer service issues. After about 10 minutes on the phone with Cabela's, my replacement waders were en route to my doorstep.

That may be so, JMan, but I do believe it is in direct correlation to the growing UN-intelligence of the American public! People that think the Yankee owned, Yankee run Gonzales Cabela's is a great place to shop also think Osama Obama is going to "Change" the world for the better!! Just my totally honest opinion.

Capt'n John, I don't think just because someone likes to shop there makes them an Obama fan. I am a prime example of that. Just my opinon. Of course opinions are like buttholes, we all got'em and most of them stink....

Capt. John, for a man who has a business and relys on the general public to make a living, you sure know how to rub people the wrong way. How could you have told people about the "bad attitudes" of the Gonzales Cabelas a few years ago, when they have just made a year that they are open? You also failed to mention that you were scheduled to do multiple seminars that weekend you spent down in Baton Rouge, but failed to show up until the last day. I know, because I was there to see one of your seminars with my kids. Apparently you felt it wasn't important enough to show up to follow through on what you had committed to do. How can you blame Cabela's for your arrogant attitude? Like the other posting stated, it appears that you think your a little more important than you really are. Peace!

I happen to like Cabela's. What I don't care for is your ignorant remark about those who choose to shop at Cabela's. You sir, have no right to be name calling. Such behavior is demeaning to none other than yourself. Your use of the word "Yankee" makes it obvious you would have no problem using a number of different derogatory names to make your narrow minded point. You utilize this site to advertise your business on hundreds of posts. Apparently you arent particular when it comes to "Yankees" booking fishing trips with you. On second thought, you may be. To Cabella's credit, I have not seen one insult of you on their bulletin board. Hopefully you will rethink your earlier position and take the high road in doing what is right. fyi I prefer to support small independant business establishments far more than the big box stores.
