I just heard that since Indian Bayou is a Federal reserve run by the Corp. and the "state" law states that we can use a 4570 cal. during muzzle loader season, but we can NOT use a 4570 on Indian Bayou??????? The link for the L.D.W.F. is not opening up so I can not check the site right now anyone know if this is true?

I do not think they are allowed. They are also not allowed on all NWRs either. I would call the office in Port Barre before showing up with one.

i went to a wildlife and fisheries "banquet" i guess you could call it before the season...they talked a lot about the new tags and stuff, and the question about using 45/70's came up in the meeting...they said as far as they know they ARE allowed in indian bayou, b/c they are following the state rules, but a quick call to port barre wouldnt hurt.

my understanding of the new laws were for state only .i think and i could be wrong but on NWR's a muzzleloader is defined as a gun loaded from the muzzle and bows are long, recurve, and compound only on the NWR's no cross bows or replica's

you are allowed to use a 45-70 or.444 cal on the state run w.m.a.s but they are not allowed on federal refuges. I am pretty sure because I spoke with the federal wildlie agent on bayou cocodrie w.m.a. and he said they were not allowed. If you are unsure just carry the old smokepole better to be safe than ticketed. hope this helps you out and if your still unsure contact the w.m.a. office

Huntin Dad, he said they were not allowed on Cocodrie Bayou?

i was told last week the reason the 45-70,444., and the crossbow are not leagal on the refuge this year is because the pamplets where printed already before the guns and bow where legal. they will be legal next year. i was also told that the gov. jindal was the one that made this possible and if he is not elected or decides to run for pres. that the next gov. could do away with this, just like the motorcycle helment law. anyone here any different.

I am not confused that is what i said they were not allowed go back and read it again! I hunt there alot and would never intitially give anyone missleading info.

Indian Bayou is not a federal reserve. It is a Army Corps of Engineers property, not USFWS. do a search online for ACOE Indian bayou hunting regulations or call 337-585-0853 and ask yourself...FYI-you have to have read the regulations and sign the permit before entering the property!

Wouldn't that be a blessing!!!! It would be great to see the state go back to making it illegal for an able-bodied adult to hunt using a crossbow!!!! I personally think, possibly for kids under the age of 18 and for seniors 62 and above it's great to allow these people to use them. But for a physically capable adult to use one, I think is useless!!!! My 2 cents.........

Bayou Cocodrie specifically addressed the 45-70 and the crossbow in their pamphlet. The 45-70 can not be used, and crossbows are limited to disabled hunters or those over 60, so they did not print the pamphlet early. I think most of the federal landsare the same, but you can check out their pamphlets online. With the HSUS suit injunction in effect, they cannot open up new land to hunting or increase hunting in any way, and allowing these new methods would violate the injunction. Hopefully they will never allow them, as their hunting would then suck as bad as the WMAs.

No need to get exited. I meant I was confused!!! I didn't realize cocodrie bayou was a NWR. I've never hunted there. Note the question mark at the end of the QUESTION!!!!!

You wrote Cocodrie Bayou W.M.A. I was confused about weather the agent told you they were not allowed on NWR's or Cocodrie bayou. Now that I know Cocodrie Bayou is a NWR, I understand your post.
