Do you shoot coyotes?

Reply

Had a great time hunting 3 Rivers WMA this weekend, but the coyotes ruined my hunts. Saturday afternoon i had a pack put on a howling competition from 5:00-5:30 less than 200 yards from me, needless to say no deer walked by that afternoon. Then this morning i see a big brown animal walking my way through some thick stuff, i draw back, it gets in the opening 10 yards away and i realize its a giant coyote, perfect broadside shot but not a deer then 1 hour later 2 does come running by at full speed being chased by a small coyote which stops 5 yards from my stand, i drew back but just couldn't shoot an animal that i don't plan to eat. This is the 3rd time i had deer being chased by coyotes @ 3 rivers.

Do coyotes ruin the hunting in an area or not that much? Would you hunt with coyotes in the area or hunt a different spot until the pack leaves? just looking for some opinions on the matter. I guess because i love my dog so much (chocolate lab) i can't bring myself to kill a dog looking animal.

Coyote
I've always been told that coyotes are no match for a full grown deer but are a big threat to yearlings and younger deer. Everyone I've ever talked to says shoot them. I haven't yet but want to. I want to have a head mounted for my fireplace if for anything else than to scare the heck out of my wife's cats!

Stack em up!
bb13, your choc. lab like mine doesn't eat your yearlings, rabbits, baby turkeys and anything else you hunt. Kill everyone you see. I will scrap a deer hunt if I see a yote. Kill em all because they multiply like hogs and will have you movin to different areas everyday to get away from em.

Shoot'em
I would shoot every one of them that I could. I don't see many around our place, but I have shot them in the past and wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

Shoot!!!!
I have seen the coyotes chase turkey poults in Three Rivers along the shell road before and they have just about wiped out the rabbit population. I wish coyotes would eat piglets to try and keep the hog herd in check.

kill em
You should alays shoot a coyote over a deer

always
always shoot the coyote, always. Look in the regs, can be taken by any legal means during open season.

I will say it depends... on whether or not I can see them. If I see one it is going down.

6 Years
I live on 18 acres right outside of Houma. In 6 years we have gone from rabbits everywhere to NO rabbits. I don't even get rabbits in my front yard anymore. But the yotes are there every night.

marsh
I used to have a lease in the marsh and I have seen some coyotes run a deer across the marsh, I think it was a 6 point. When the coyotes would come throught it was over for a few days until it settled down.

SHOOT 'EM
I always shoot them everytime I see them. They are good for nothing they only kill all the rabbits and also give deer hell. I have only seen 1 yearling all year on my lease and hear packs of coyotes all the time. 2 weeks ago I hear a pack howling at 8:00 am first for me. What is heard through the grapevine but don't know how true it is tha the LDWF brought them down hear in South Louisiana by the truck loads at night years ago for them to kill the nutrias that are tearing up the marshlands. But I guess they didn't do much research because a nutria will fight back unlike a rabbit and deer that can only run for there life.

Shoot
I, like most of the other guys, shoot every one I see. In my opinion, a bow killed mature coyote is a heck of a trophy. They're as skittish and are as hard or harder to kill as a mature whitetail. Again, that's just my opinion.

whoa, who pulled this report up which i posted last year? well sorry guys but i've still been letting the yotes walk and love all animals and hate killing anything but I do love to eat game so i kill for that reason and for the challenge of course too. I actually got to watch some in the campground at redriver this year. Had one biting on my bloodstained camo pants and licking on my pots just 5 feet from me one morning before a hunt. It was a really cool experience. He didn't seem to be scared by me at all. It woke me up quick though when i opened my camper door and he was underneath my tarp right beside me. But i'm sure there's enough hunters out there who do kill 'em to keep the population in check. Plus hearing the yotes yelp at dusk is fun to hear and sents a chill down your spine when a big pack is nearby and your alone in the woods. Also got to watch one chase a rabbit while stalking before. Its like national geographic channel in reality.

yotes
You better kill them before they kill all of your deer. If they are showing no sign of being afraid of a human, guess who is next for dinner!

hmm...
You're nicer than me. I don't trust any animal that isn't scared of me. I shoot every one I see. Shoot one with a 45-70 if you ever get a chance, it's about the same as shooting a poodle with a rocket launcher.

Nope,
I don't shoot what I don't eat. I find yotes and bobcats to be amazing and resilient animals. You can run to the store and get your next meal, those animals are out there trying to survive. Takes a horrible human to not understand that.

Coyotes are not native to this area and should be extended the same courtesy that we extend to Nutria and Asian Carp. There is a huge problem in N.O. East, Slidell, Plaquemines Parish and even Algiers with Coyotes. Last summer on the way to Venice, we saw one on the neutral ground on Gen Degaulle. They are killing people's pets with scary regularity.

Unfortunately it has nothing to do with shooting what you don't eat. The coyotes have gotten completely out of control. The population really needs to be thinned down. Large populations of coyotes have incredible impacts on turkey, deer, rabbit and even fox populations.

not
well no sense in complaining about the those Dogs if you arent going to be a good hunter and shoot them when you get a chance and with a bow at that, wouldnt even have hurt your hunt. they are a menance, to the deer and rabbit, and turkey and when given a chance, which i will add is not that often, take the out if you can, especially with a bow, no noise to spoke what ever you are hunting.

Shoot them right in front of the back legs through the gut and they run off your plot and die that way you dont have to drag that stinky thing off works perfect....

Hey
CajunHopper, my Grandmother was 100% Comanche Indian and she would probably be the first to tell you that white people aren't native to this area either, and are completely out of control. Maybe we should get rid of those too??

?are u nuts?
Dude, It's pretty simple logic: no coyotes, no deer; Know coyotes, Know deer.
shoot every coyote you see, otherwise you'll never see a turkey, rabbit, or deer in the quality or quantity you would hope to beleive.

coyotes suck
ive hunted three rivers before and there are definetly alot of coyotes out there. If it was me i would just shoot everyone i saw there a nuisance and should be killed. end of story

Cook em and eat em
I bet they taste pretty good with some green onions and mushrooms over rice. Ive eaten nutria before and its just as good as rabbit if not better. I live on Grand Isle and have watched the coyotes catch rabbits on the beach when the corp wiped out all the grass when they redone the levee. The coyotes are everywere. We trapped one in a hog trap in woodville ms and they are mean as hell. I tried to feed it some steak and it just stared at me. It tried to bite me every chance it got.

COYOTES AND HOUSE CATS
I KILL EVERY FERAL HOUSE CAT AND COYOTE I SEE . I MAY RUIN A HUNT DOING SO , BUT IT MAKES FOE BETTER HUNTS LATER . READ THE UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA STUDY. COYOTES KILL OVER HALF OF THE FAWNS BORN . THE STUDY WAS IN EITHER FIELD AND STREAM OR OUTDOOR LIFE --IT WAS DEFINITLY IN THE AMERICAN HUNTER FROM THE NRA. IT CONFIRMED MY THOUGHTS ON COYOTES . THEY DONT KILL MANY ADULT DEER BUT THEY KILL MANY FAWNS AND EAT TURKEY EGGS AND BABY TURKEYS ..IF THEY GET ENOUGH OF THE YOUNG THERE WILL NOT BE MANY ADULTS OF WHATEVER YOU ARE HUNTING .

Friend of mine shot a coyote off of his stand, then 5 minutes later shot an 8-point, all with a rifle. Just to say that shooting a coyote doesn't necessarily ruin your hunt. I agree that I don't like killing things I don't eat, but I'll make a big exception for a coyote.

kill em all
For every Coyote you let walk, you just killed probably a dozen deer that year.
