35 Whelen VS 45-70 on Encore Prohunter

Reply
Can anyone tell me the pro's-cons of a 35 Whelen vs a 45-70 on an Encore-they are legal in MS during muzzle loader season, and was wondering which is better all around. Distance, knock down, accuracy, bullet drop, etc. Any experience is welcome.

No experience with an Encore, 35 Whelen or 45-70, but I can vouch for the Knight KP1 in 444. Half inch group at 100 yards. Deadly on deer. Guess that didn't help much did it.

Helps a little, the 444 is also an option.

I would also recommed the 444. I sighted mine in at 2 inches high at 100 yards and a 200 hundred yards it shoots 2 inches low. So at 200 yards, the 444 only drops 4 inches. The 444 has much better balistics than the 45-70

All the rounds mentioned will do the job; but the 35 wheelen is the superior of the 3. It is legal in MS and is really sust a 30.06 necked out to .35 cal. The added bullet diameter and weight makes it a little more lethal than the 30.06. It has superior ballistics to the .444 and the 45/70. This particular round (35 wheelen) is THE reason that MS adjusted thier caliber down from the minimum 38 cal last season. I baught the .444 b/c it is ballistically superior to the 45/70 and can be used in both LA and MS. However, if LA takes the same regs next season; I will be looking for a 35 wheelen for sure. Thats how much better it is over all other rounds legal for PA season. It is all the rage with serious deer hunters in MS.

If what you say is true about the Whelen they may as well trash the idea of a primitive weapons season, which it really isn't anymore anyway, and just call it a Single Shot season. Aint nothing primitive about my KP1 I'm using.

I have killed deer with both cartiges (350 Rem mag) a ballistic equal to the 35 Wealen, and the 45-70. The 35 Wealen is certainly not a primitive cartrige anyway you look at it. The 30-06 case necked up to .358 dia. it's a knockdown drag out cartrige with a good 300 yard range. With 200 grain Rem Corlocts it is devistating on deer and the 250 grain makes it a very good Elk and Moose round.

Of course the 45-70 is too, and can do anything the 35 can do it just has a more curved trajectory.

As far as results the 45-70 will slide them on the ground a little further than the 35 after they hit the ground, while you wont need as much hold over with the 35 at longer range. Both rounds blow deer sideways after the hit, you just have to watch closely.

If the 35 Wealen is legal then so would be the 9.3X74R (.366) another cartrige to look at.

Thanks for the info. How big a bullet you shootin in that thing? Who makes the better bullets for it? How fast out of the muzzle? I'm at work and can't look it up. Thanks in advance.

The 200 grain Rem Corloct is the best deer bullet for the 35 and readily availible in a factory load. For the 45-70 it looks like the Hornady 325 grain flextip is the best on deer. That would include the 444 Marlin with a 265 grain flextip. I have used the 270 grain Buffalo bore round, which is a speer bullet, they dont open up on small deer so they might go about 25 yards. All these rounds are accurate.

I don't have a 45-70 to compare to, but I bought a 35 Whelen TC Encore this year and love it. Shot a doe at 160 yards and got a complete pass thru with a Rem. corelokt 200 gr. Would not hesitate to shoot one out to 300 yards. It is definitely NOT a primitive weapon. I might as well load just 1 bullet in my 300WSM. Good luck with your decision.

I have no experience with the 35 but I have shot a few single shot 45/70's. They shoot good groups with the hornady flex tips but they kick like a pissed off plow mule and have a trajectory similar in shape to a rainbow. It'll kill the hell outta pretty much anything you get mad at, but the 35 has to be a better choice. Just looking at ballistic charts it shoots much flatter and it probably doesnt kick as hard. If there's not much chance of you shooting past 150 yards then the 45/70 is wonderfull but outside of that you're much better off with the 35. The only downside is that the 35 is not legal in Louisiana if you hunt here any.

It is legal in MS during the primitive weapon season. Very good round to shoot. I bought 2 and topped them with Nikpon scopes in GRIM REAPER rings from Hebert Guns.

Shot MSF's 35Welen and he's telling the truth. Gun holds a 2" high bullet placement at 100 yds and dead on at 200 with Remington Corelock 200gr.

I have shot the 35 whelen scout. It does have a good kick but it is also light and short. It will put deer down. I just shot a doe with 200 grain yesterday here in ms at about 70 yards or so dead on target and she fell right on over and died pretty quickly. It did blow half of her lung out of her body. My dads friend is not that of a great shooter and he has gotten two so far and they too dropped. This one I hunting with is my dads but I thinking about getting one. I will probably look for one that is heavier and longer.

I hunt in La and was gonna get the .35 whelen, so i read the hunting pamphlet and this is what it says under 'major changes for 2012-2013 hunting regs'-- prim firearm to allow rifles .35 cal or larger and remove pre-1900 replica, reproduction or reintroduction requirement,,, so yes it is legal in LA
