TRAINING A YOUNG BASSETT TO RABBIT HUNT

Reply
Looking for some guidance on how to go about training a young Bassett Hound puppy to rabbit hunt, anyone have any good websites with details or can recommend a good book for training. Years ago I trained a black lab through "The Water Dog" book which was great but I don't believe that author has any specific books on training rabbit dogs. When I was younger I had a bassett/beagle hound mix and she was a great rabbit hunter but I got her after she was trained. Any suggestions is appreciated.

Bring'em to a rabbit pen and see if he'll run/has "the hunt"/interested. Donm't believe you'll make a good hunter with a "house doh", but ya never know. Also, if you know someone with rabbit dogs, take him along on a hunt and see if he'll run.

get a pet rabbit and let him chase it around a little and maybe he might get hooked on it and run something

He should kind of just have it. Find somebody that has a slow trailing pack of rabbit dogs and cut your dog loose with em and see if he catches on. If he does, start letting him run with a pack of dogs that you like. He'll catch on

Doeslayer I kinda dissagree with the pet rabbit deal unless you let him trash it and try to kill it and stuff. He needs to learn to really really hate bunnies

yah true but if hes just a puppy he aint fast enough to catch a pet rabbit and it would just be somethin to get him started out on
but yah when he gets bigger you would have to stop because then he would kill it

Yea true if he's still really young a lil bunny might not be a bad thing for him to have unless he trys to make friends with it

Will do, got some rabbit scent from Bass Pro the other day and will start teasing her with it. Probably then run a trail in the woods when she's further advanced and she should take it from there. Unfortunately I don't have access to rabbit dogs for her to trail with.
