I'm gong to Gulf Shores in July. I will do some surf fishing for sure. Does anyone have any experience with any of the inshore guide services there. I want to take my father-in-law, he has never been saltwater fishing.Maybe someone can tell me who to go with or even who to stay away from. Any info on surf fishing in that area would help also...thanks

Gulf Shores
I've been to Gulf Shores 4 times in the past 7 years. I have never seen anyone fishing in the surf. I not saying people don't, I have just never seen anyone. If you are staying in one of the many condos, ask the people that you are renting from. They might know someone.

I got this info from another source but will share it with you:

"I've fished over the years with Jeff Chambliss, David Brown and Mo Shaver quite a few time. They are all great inshore guides and are a pleasure to be around. Any of the three would be great to use and I'll be using them over the summer as well."

SURFIN'
Chris, I'd stay away from the inshore guides. They're expensive and the limits (if you're lucky enough to catch one) are small. Nothing against them, there's some GOOD fishermen there, but they just don't have the fishing structure and have a limited number of spots to fish unlike in good ole Louisiana. They all generally fish the same things(jetties, boat docks, grass beds). We've got guides several times with the same results & responses. "Man, we tore them up yesterday...don't know what happened today" You can catch a mess of lady fish in the surf with trout baits (especially top dogs--they ATTACK THEM!!)early in the morning. I don't know if it's legal, but I usually keep one or two and cut them up into chunks and zing one with heavy weight out as far as I can throw it. You can usually catch bluefish all day long depending on what month you go. They say you can catch trout and reds in the surf but I've been going for years and (not saying they don't catch 'em)haven't caught one yet......good luck

Surf Fishing
I went surf fishing with a couple friends down at the beach at Port Fourchon. Needless to say I was not impressed but neither was the fishing that day either. My friend did catch a small redfish out in the surf so they are there to be caught. Just gotta be at the right place at the right time with the right lure. Good Luck!

don't know that this will help, went to Gulfshores 2 years ago and stayed between Gulf Shores proper and Fort Morgan. Got bored, went to local "pic a pac" and purchased cut bait and a cheap reel/rod. We were on the Mobile Bay side of the pennisula. Fished from the beach and ending up catching a couple of trout, flounder and a 36" redfish. also talked with a boater in the Condo Marina and he said that at the end of Fort Morgan where the bay meets the gulf was also a good place to catch bull reds. Going to the bay side may be an option.

I have tried all kinds of baits in the surf. I came up empty till I started using cast net and catching mullet and using fresh cut bait. Frozen will not work. Good luck and let me know how you did.

I used to visit a friend in Perdido Key and we fished at Johnson's beach just in Florida. We caught sand fleas in the surf by scooping with a small mesh net right where the water breaks on the beach. If you watch for them you can see them right before they bury in the sand. Some are as big as the first joint on your thumb. Fished them Carolina rigged in the surf and caught Pompano and reds. If nothing else works try it. Pompano are some awesome fish to eat. Around the 4th of July is usually when we caught them.
Good luck,
Wayne
