Wireless Dog Fence

Reply
Well my dog just got hit by a car. Thank god, she is all right. I definately need to get some type of system to keep her in the yard. Does anyone have any advice on if the wireless dog fences are any good and if so, what are the best models.

Never used the invisible fence but knew people who have, seemed there were "holes" in the fence here and there. Here is my situation, I have a secure fenced area for my dog whom I got as puppy. Any time I let him out the secure area I would put a shock collar on him and dedicate time to watch him closely. Any time he got out of his "area" I would pop him with some DC voltage. He now knows his area. When I put the garbage out or check the mail stops at his boundry. This method is best started as a puppy. Good luck PS - I should add you need a secure area for your dog, your dog should not be allowed to roam, if he does he/she will get hit by a vehicle.

I have my dog on the Pet Safe wireless, shock collar from home depot, it is kinda off expensiveat right at 300 dollars, but it works good, and you just plug it into the wall socket and put the collar on your dog and your in bussiness, and you cann adjust how big the radius your doug can use if you like to camp or whatever, you can range from around 100ft radius up to 10 foots radius with the roll of thumb and that light blinks on the collar when the battery starts to die, i have used for about 1 and 1/2 years no problems at all

This wireless fence, you are saying that it is strictly radio frequency?? There is none of that running wire under the ground and what not?? My back yard is completely fenced except for my driveway " 20 ft ". Would this work??

Well, I use to have a German Shep. She got out of our invisible fence. You have to work, alot, with your dog before you are ready to just let them run in the yard with the fence plugged in. If your dog ever gets past the fence, they know how fast they need to run to get the shocking to stop, then they are on the outside of the fence and won't want to get back into the yard. Good Luck!!

I have a male black lab. I bought the one for stuborn dogs with the 9v battery after he got hit by a car and broke his hip, you put a wire underground in a area. It worked at first but when he saw a cat he ran through it with a yelp. But he would come back through it and yelp again and I would know he was back in the yard. Big dumb male lab. Love him to death.

When you first install the invisible fence (underground), they recommend you put the little white flags around the perimeter to give the dog a visual on what his boundries are. You may get a couple of "Run-thrus" before he/she learns what a "stimulation" feels like.( I don't use the word shock because some people think it is inhumane). It can't hurt as bad as that Goodyear Brain Damage....I use Smart Dog Containment System by Innotek...

i have a lab that is like a david copperfeild of dogs i cannot keep him in any pen he even escapes from the house by turning the deadbolt so i was leary but went ahead and tried the pet safe wireless fence. its been 2.5 years and great i do have to stay on top of the batteries cause he will try it out every few months and if its dead he's gone but if not he stays the batt usually last 2 monthe so about 3 bucks every two months aint bad. what happens with a fence with the wire is that it knows no sides so if he runs through it it'll stop shocking the wireless is a radio feild so when he crosses is continues to shock till he returns or the batt dies.

I can see where radio controlled can be better for "hard-headed" dogs. I want to research more...

My brother in law has a rottweiler and has one of the wired invisible fences. Just to show you how smart these dogs are, he noticed that the collar kept burning the batteries. One day he caught the dog in the act and figured out what was going on. The dog would go just close enough to the wire to where the collar would give him weak warning pulses. Brother in law saw him lying there with his neck muscle jumping. After he would burn the battery that way, he would roam free. Thanks for the comments.

i would def. go with the petsafe wireless fence. Cost a good bit but is very easy to set up. You can adjust the collar to make the shock worse. Very easy to use. The batterys in the collar last a month or 2 but you can buy the batteries for around 10 bucks for 2. It shocks the dog until he goes back into the safe area. Hope this helps.

does anybody know if it will work under a driveway? i am thinking about getting the petsafe but would have to cross under my driveway to make it go all the way across the front of my property. Just wondering if its strong enough to shock through the driveway? thanks

If you use the petsafe it is wireless so you wont have to worry about going under the driveway or running any wire for that matter it is wireless

I had one and it worked well for about 6 months. My mix lab and catahoula cur learned how to take the shock and dart through the barrier. She would get a running start and hall a** through it with ease. Maybe it would work better for short-legged dogs.

All fences wireless or not, you may experience a "run through". Dogs, especially mine, love to chase small furry things. They'll run right through them and not even know it, and then when they come walking back they get zapped and cant come home.
My advice gentlemen, professional dog training. Its like $100 at 'petsma#t' and well worth it. Those units cost up to $300+. And your dog learns more than a boundary. And I think they come with some kind of guarantee. I have a redbone coonhound, and she can now come out in the front yard with us and just watches cats and squirrels. She is a different dog now. Its amazing. And she is not just a house dog, she'll track wounded deer for me too. (they don't teach that in school)

I used the Pet Safe wireless fence on my boxer for years. I've never had any issues with her running off. I don't even have to put a new battery in it now. She knows the line and won't push it. If she does, I throw a new battery in, she hears the beeps, and she's right back in check. Unlike most wire type fences, It will keep shocking until the dog returns to the safe zone. Run throughs don't exist! You can set the range and power which is another nice feature. It'll probably cost you $250 or so but well worth it in my book.

p.s. I'de use it on the kids if there wouldn't be any legal issues :-p

The underground fence DOES work under a driveway. I have my wire ran under my 4" driveway thru a pvc pipe and it works. I have 2 labs that it only took 1 day believe it or not for them to get use to it. I have 3 acres fenced in with a pond. These dogs are in the pond EVERYDAY and the collars have not leaked. The only problem I've had so far is from the dogs laying on the concrete wearing the plastic down on the collar. I had to replace a collar because the plastic and the screw were wore to nothing - could not see the phillps-head on the screw to replace the battery. Otherwise, I am totally satisified with this system - Petsafe stubborn dog. I have a tool (plow) that I made that rigs up to my atv to lay the wire down...takes NO time
