Opening day frogs

Reply

Got invited to go on an opening night frogging trip! I just couldn't pass it up! After getting torn up by mosquitoes for about 3 hrs we cranked up the airboats and began our mission. Despite the high water we did pretty good, we ended up with 26 in about 1 1/2 hrs, but had a bunch dive before we could get to them. Between 3 boats we ended up with almost 150, not bad with the river being so high! But the interesting part of our trip cameMonday morning when we started cleaning the frogs. As I skinned 1 I could feel something in his belly, so I felt it and gave it a peculiar look. Micah says, " it's a crawfish". I said " I don't think so, cut the stomach open!" So he did, and this is what we found... It's a bat!!!! WTF!?!?!... Anybody ever see this before?

No bats but,
I've got a frog in my backyard pond that eats baby sparrows & bluebirs on a regular basis. I witnessed one crunch session, & saw him with a wing hanging out of his mouth on another. On another note, back in high school, I went to Oklahoma & we caught frogs around peoples swimming pools by casting a big plastic worm in front of em, lettin em gobble it down, then settin tha hook!

haha believe it or not we catch a lot of frogs throwing scum frogs and ribbits on topwater! Seems like frogs hit anything that comes their way.

I caught one about 5 years ago had an entire nest of yellow jackets in him. He must have set up under that tree and picked em off 1 by 1.

I didn't realize frogs ate all that stuff. I would just like to know how the bat got caught by a frog! I mean, I'm a pretty decent shot with a shotgun, and I'm not even sure that I could hit a bat with a 12 gauge! LOL

I was actually thinking about this post during lunch today. And I think I figured it out! You see your little bullfrog there had his eye on this mosquito buzzing around his head and he was patiently waiting to shoot him out of the sky with his long elastic tongue. Finally the moment came and when he shot out his tongue a bat came at the same time and his tongue struck the bat, sticking to the bat was his tongue, and then when his elastic tongue was to its maximum length the frog came flying through the air with his mouth wide open gulping up the bat at the same time. lol And thats my theory.

Jeremy< that's pretty much how I figured it happened! That is really about the only thing that I can figure out! I would have loved to see the whole ordeal take place!

Super Bat
The most impressive thing about that deal was the size of the frog that eat that bat! We had some nice frogs in the box but he wasn't one of them, he was alittle on the small side.

Another thing....has anyone watched a bat fly around lately! How the heck did he get that bat????

Never a bat but did clean some big bulls with live crabs in their stomachs. Some of the crabs were about 3-4 in long. I think frogs will eat just about anything that moves and will fit into their mouth.

cottonmouth
I caught one that had a 12in cottonmouth in his belly. Guess he got it before it got big enough to get him.

Frog Food
FYI - Bats have to fall into flight. If they get knocked down to the ground, they cannot fly away!
So, my theory is this bat was lying on the bank unable to fly away and BAM.....Frog Food!
