Bluefin aren't as rare as you may think. We've been seeing them every year since I've been offshiore fishing...since the 80's. It's possible they landed 10, but the bluefin's we normally see in the Gulf are volkswagons...only landable on 130lb class rods, if at all. The only way the east coast fisherman land them is when they com into the shallower water, they run out of room to run. In 500ft of water, there's no other place to go. But out past the shelf, its a few thousand feet deep, so they go straight down and will spool an 80 in a 2 minutes.
