Mercury Question

Reply
I have a 2004 Mercury Optimax 225. I recently started having problems with the trim. It gives me trouble when trying to trim up and down by using the throttle or when using the trim on the motor. Last week it went out totally and now my motor will not trim. After looking at it and talking to a mechanic he thinks it may be the trim motor. I thought it was one of the relay boxes to the trim. I wanted to bring it in to Metro Boating to get fixed but I was told that it would take a couple weeks. I am trying to get back on the water by Friday. Has anybody had any trouble with this motor? What do ya'll think it probably is? I am going to try to fix it myself on Thursday. Where should I start? Thanks

Can you hear a sound when pressing the trim controls. Take the lines out and mauanlly apply it to a battery to see if the switches are the culprit. Did you check your fluid to see if there is any water intrusion. This should help you isolate the problems.

Thanks for the reply. I will run the line straight to the battery.

Sorry to hear that Metro is that busy right now. But, that is who I would bring it to if I had to bring it anywhere. Good Luck.

I had the same problem with my 1999 Optimax 200. if your 225 is wired the same way as mine was, the wires come down from the motor to the trim motor and between those, they are attached to the ub=nit with a cable strap that is screwed into the transom mout. It was at this loop that i found a short in the wiring due to the way the wires a=re routed there. Before you spend money on a trim motor, unscrew the clip and check for a faulty wire at that location. I was able to resplice the wires and use some Skothkote to water proof them, and it's worked fine ever since.

Hammerhead is "right on"...I had the same problem with my 135 Optimax,,,I made a new connection on that little strap and all has been well for 2 years now...If that's your problem, it's an easy and cheap fix..
