FOOD PLOT QUESTION

What do use to cover up the seeds. I have been using a 4 foot 4x4 with some chainlink fence tied to it. It works ok but just wanted some ideas that may work better. I can weld something up if need be, so throw out some ideas and/or personal experiences. Thanks........

We use a old bedspring.

If you use the chain link, put some weight on the fence part. Usually doesn't take much, 10 lbs. spread out about 6"-12" from the back.

The best thing that I found was some bar grading (cat walk) it's 3' wide and about 5' long works great. Pulls behind a bike with ease.

Keep it simple..I take my 4 wheeler trailor in the woods with me with my seed, choppers and whatever else I have.I drop the grate ramp, throw a couple of leftover Gustov sandbags on the center. Loop a long piece of ROMEX, rope, chain, ratchet strap( whatever is close).. Drag it slow. Drink a couple beers.

Two years ago I invested in one of those big plastic roller drums. You fill it with water to get the desired weight and it is easily pulled behind a four wheeler. I have been planting food plots for over 20 years and have tried everything that you can imagine to cover up seed. This by far has worked the best. I have learned that seed bed prep is the most important part of the process. Leveling the food plot after it is tilled or disc. It is a step a lot of people skip. Make sure all the big clots are broken up. Especially if you are using a disc. Going to a 5" tiller has also helped a lot. The roller presses the seed firmly and evenly into the soil and my food plots have never looked better!

We use an old metal frame mattress. If you can find one, and you usually can find a single, double, or twin mattress on the side of the road, trash pile, or heap, you just burn it, and voila! Not too light, and not too heavy either, works great.

Invest in a chain drag harrow. You will NOT be dissapointed. It can be pulled two different directions. Aggressive and non aggressive. I disc, and then pull it aggressive. It takes all the grass and trash out as well as levels it. Then after I seed, I turn it around and drag it to cover. Best foodplot tool they have. Some plots that are pretty loose soil, i dont even disc, i just drag.

I have tried everything and nothing even remotely comes close

The drum roller works great after this too

I got some used traffic sign posts( bent up) from the town.I cut them and used the straight parts . I bolted some chain link fence between the six 4 ft long pieces of sign post. I put eye bolts at each end to hook to it.It drags clotted dirt smooth and covers seed nicely .Cost me about 4 dollars been using it 6 years.
parts list --six 4 ft long pieces of sign post (free)
six feet of 4 ft chain link fence(already had)
9 1/4 inch bolts 2 inches long with washers
and nuts
2 eyes bolts washers and nuts

best thing is the ramp on the 4 wheeler Trailor.
plenty heavy enough and the grating keeps it chopped up finely on top. I just bring my trailor loaded with seed fertailzer and tools and get it all in one swoop

Old fence Gates !! I pick up on any I can find. Ties a couple of big logs to it an rock and roll !! Make a rope bridal and just hook it to the ball on your bike
