Boycotting Academy

I sent my future son in law to Academy Sports to buy himself the Taurus Judge he liked mine so much he wanted his own he filled out his federal forms and got delayed as many of us do. Well I told him no big issue they can release the gun to you after 72 hours. He went back and Academy refuses to release the gun. According to the store manager in Kenner Academy has a store policy that they will not release a firearm until they get the call back from the feds because if they find out later that they were not suppose to release the gun then they have to go and retrieve the gun from the owner. I am calling BS on her the whole way. I told her that the Feds allow you to take possession after 72 hours if they have not called back and she said that she is aware of that but Academy will not honor this. I told her I know of situations where the feds have never called back to clear the person she said well he will never get the gun. I think they need to read the regs and get a better understanding sent him to another guy and he will pick his gun up on Saturday whether they are called back or not the hell with Academy Sports and outdoors they can close as far as I am concerned.

You cant see the problem?
The problem is right in front of you and you cant see it.

FEMALE SPORTING GOODS MANAGER!! Like she knows what she is doing

Academy Manager
Last week she was the footwear manager and the week before that she was a greeter. Academy has no real specialized personel.

It is not 72 hours.
It is 7 days. I get the same delay. After 7 days they can sell you the gun.

But just think if it would be a crook who was trying to buy that gun then later use it on your family wouldn't you be glad that Academy stopped him from picking it up after 72 hours

72 hours
Sounds like he got the runaround for sure. What's the deal with the 72 hours anyway? I bought a rifle at Academy in Lafayette back in January last year and there was an instant background check. Took maybe 20 minutes or so from start to finish. They gave me the papers to fill out while the check was going on over the computer. Is it something different with handguns? Also, waiting on the GOVERNMENT to call THEM back? Yeah! I'm SURE that's gonna happen right away! Don't hold your breath.

hey , just call your local sheriffs dept . ask if they can tell you what the problem is .. the feds send them a list of holds an they investigate , if you call you may be able to speed up the process...my son had the same problem last year . he was arrested when he was 17 , the charges were dropped , but it still flagged his name ...

Ditto myself...
Just because the feds don't call back, releasing the weapon isn't the right thing to do.

Where's the service?
I hear you. What ticks me off is there inability to keep inventory. You put something on sale and then you cannot keep it in stock. Call to see if the have gotten any in and are told, “Yeah we got 12 in this morning, but they are already sold.”
“Are you going to order some more?”
“I don’t know.”

What kind of service is that?

Delay
Ok, I understand now the reason for the delay. I read through some more comments. I get it. Still seems like Academy could be more helpful about the situation, and maybe follow up in some way if they don't get a call.
Reply
store policy
Used to work at academy and that is the company policy, the feds leave the final call up to the company if the choose to release a firearm or not. Feds say the gun can be released after said amount of time not that it has to be released. As for the feds calling back, I've seen them call back within 2 minutes, and I've also seen it take weeks.

After the way that the Manager in Kenner acted they can all go out of business as far as I am concerned I will shop and support the local gun shops from now on and let evryone that loves Academy send their money to the office in Texas my money will be spent here at home and stay here.........

as the guy said below,it is the company policy. i used to work there also and sometimes, like he said, they call back in 2 minutes, 2 weeks, or they never call back. what you can do is call the NICS hotline and they can speed it up. you will need to go back to academy, have them pull your old 4473(they should keep it for a while), and get the NTN number off it. when you call NICS they will ask you for the NTN number and thats how they pull your info. ask someone behind the reel bar for a NICS pamphlet, it will have their number

myself and wschamp98 you guys are idiots!I think you are on the wrong site too you might want to try some gun control sites! If a criminal is gonna buy a gun he ain't gonna go to Academy!Wake up!

Same Here!!
I had the same exactly problem at the Academy in Slidell. I tried to buy a shotgun and got delayed (I always do), and went back after a week and they told me they never got a call back but still wouldn't release the firearm. Store policy and all.

Well I went to a local gun broker and after 3 days of no response I got the gun I wanted.

Academy isn't the problem here though, it is the NICS system. If they deny you, then you have the option to appeal the decision and clear up any problems (if it is their mistake), BUT, if you are put in delayed status then you can just be left there forever, AND, you can't appeal anything while in hold status. Basically, you just got the right to buy a firearm from places like Academy taken away. This would also include gun shows since they are gone before the 72 hours expires.

Basically, I served my country and was honorably discharged. I was born here. I have never been convicted of anything, but I can't buy a gun from gun shows or retailers who do not sell without an approval regardless of how long you are on delayed status.

No 2nd Ammendment for me!!

Bird Dog
And just to add to the point Bird Dog made, Los Angeles had an estimated 1800+ assult rifle gun sales last year, and guess what. IT IS ILLEGAL TO SELL OR OWN ASSULT RIFLES IN LOS ANGELES!! Sounds like the only people buying and selling them are criminals. You really think those laws do ANYTHING to stop a criminal from getting a gun? ANY GUN? NO, it only stops law abiding citizens.

I hope all of you boycott and stop going to Academy. That way when i go, they won't be out of the things I need!!!

Please pass the word around!

Hopefully enough people won't be there this afternoon and I can get some shopping done!

Outdoorsmen at least....
I really enjoy just looking at all the stuff in Academy but shouldnt it be a requirement of a worker to be an outdoorsman at least???!!!!!! some of the fellas there im sure have no idea how to take apart a shotgun or somethin.... We should open up our own store eh? Academy Sports, Louisiana Sportsman edition..."if we dont got the bait you need, you dont know how to fish!"

Buy Local
I think Academy has become the "Walmart" of the outdoor supplies world. I'm not denying that I've gone there, but this is how I see it. When I but things I need on a regular basis "grocery shopping" like lures, sinkers, hooks, etc., I sometimes go to Academy because they are close to work and open when I get off. However, If I make a "big purchase", guns, bows, arrows, rods, reels, etc., I go local. With the big ticket items, you need to have good service and knowledgeable staff. At academy, you rarely see that. In the mom and pop stores, you see it more (quality and knowledge). I know this isn't entirely about the waiting period issue CWB is experiencing, but just an observation I've made over time about Academy

on the contrary to what bird dog said, i have had criminals come in and try to buy pistols from academy. they answered the question to have you ever been convicted of a felony with a big YES. and some try and lie and check no but get denied and some tell me, "oh, ok, i know whats its for"

Just got a call from future son in law and Mr. Louques from Louques Firearms has called him back and he is good to go. Just filled out his paperwork yesterday and he is approved. Yesterday made one week since the paperwork was completed with Academy and he has not heard a word from them other than they are waiting when he calls. Thank you Mrs Tennis Shoe Sales Manager form the Kenner Store for proving my point you can sell somethings but I will keep my gun business at the gun stores from now on and you can keep your store policies and guns because I will not buy them nor will my family...

i agree with you bird dog,i was just saying there are people dumb enough to still try to buy guns after being convicted of felonies. i dont mean people with a DUI charge from back in their hell raisin days trying to buy a new duck gun, i mean THUGS with baggy pants and huge chains with probably domesitc abuse or robbery charges tryin to buy a new 9 to tote. believe me, i dont agree with adding more gun control because like you said its just gunna keep guns out of good peoples hands. i was just sayin some people that have no business buying a gun from academy still will try

I'm pretty sure I know what sporting goods manager you are talking about, because I bought a gun from that same academy last year, and she was the sporting goods manager then. I was with my dad, who after we left said that he has bought three other guns from that exact same lady over several years. And I will attest to the fact that she knows a lot about firearms; she and the other worker (who was also a woman) were talking about the gun club one of them was in. Just becuase she is a woman doesnt mean she's nieve or not doing her job correctly. And although the federal law states that they can release the gun to you, academy probably still has the right to hold the gun because THEY don't want to have to go through the hassle of getting the gun back if they werent supposed to release it.

Just a suggestion

ACADEMY-
same kind of service and knowledge that you get at any fast food restaurant. 18 yr kids trying to give technical advice and service to experienced sportsman

CABELAS-
High a$$ prices but great customer service. Both the fish and tackle , and the gun shop have very informative employess who know where to fish or hunt and have all the current info from other sportsmen who stop by to shop.

BASSPRO-
Reasonable prices and piss poor information from former WAL-MART greeters. These guys have no clue about any of their equipment, and can only tell you where the fish are biting in the local ponds of LIVINGSTON PARISH

BOWIE OUTFITTERS-
as ignorant and rude as they come!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with what someone else said earlier.I do the same thing,If I need something in a hurry I will just run to Academy but for large purchases I go to mom and pop stores.I would much rather keep them in buisness then corporate America. On the other hand I will not buy a new gun,I buy all my guns off this site or from friends, gun shows, etc.

I purchased 9 guns in the last 6 months from Gunbroker.com, had them delivered each time to a local FFL dealer. When they came in i would fill out the paperwork and be declined just like your son each time...but instead of having to wait 72 hours i always had to wait 7 days then they gave me the gun for the transfer fee. The form i signed explained that it could take as long as 7 days if a violation such as pending speeding ticket showed up on my background and recent driving records had a issue that needed further investigation,
Hope this helps !

Bought a rifle in opelousas walmart onetime. I live in ville platte. Made that chick drive all the way to my house with her little papers. She wasn't too happy. wasn't burning my gas!

I've bought several guns from Academy over the last few years with no issues. Bought them from Gunbroker.com with no issues. Bought them from Puglia's with no issues. I've bought them in Shreveport at BassPro with no issues. I've bought them in Marksville and Alexandria with no issues.

I always wonder what someone has done when they can't get it done quickly. I've NEVER, EVER waited over 15-20 minutes for approval. I have friends that have been denied only to fess up later that they had records. I've seen people delayed that fussed and cussed forever until someone pressed them and they always came back with "well, I DID do something when I was such and such age". Many were DUI's. Several were drug convictions. One guy at work was felony theft. Kind of makes you wonder WHY people are turned down or delayed for extended periods of time, huh?

Bottom line is that if it's their policy you have to respect them for that. Period. You have rules at your house about things and that's their house-so they have their rules. If you don't like their rules then go elsewhere without all the boo-hooing, whining and crying. After all, it is STILL America for a little while longer-exercise your right to shop where you want and enjoy life!

I can not believe that there are four outdoor stores in the BR area and you can't get good service at any. If you intend on walking in a store for a particular item and want no help, go to Academy. They very rarely have an employee with any knowledge of the outdoors. Its mostly students that are being paid bare minimum.

Try this. Put on some older cloths and walk in to Bowie Outfitters. They will show you the door. That is the rudest people in the outdoor retail business. If you don't look like you have money, you are treated accordingly. If you don't believe, try it out. They will be having a store closing sale shortly. Theres no way a business can survive acting like that.

1st gun
I was held up for 3 days when I bought my first gun but it was 9/12/01. After that I never had to wait but I read where someone said a pending speeding ticket could hold you up? That seems weird for a traffic stop to affect something like that. Knock on wood Ive never had a problem but Ive never really been in real trouble either. I did see one time at Academy where they would not sell a handgun to a Marine because he had a California liscence but was stationed down here somewhere, That was not right it would seem if you were active military you could buy a gun but they refused him. I thought that was really messed up but I don't write the laws.

Refusing to sell to military was a confused employee..unless things have changed at academy when i worked there we could sell to active duty if they provided a copy of their orders placing them stationed in this state....that being said 99% of military, law enforcement, etc, etc.....do get put on delay. Not real sure why, you would think those would be the guys we want to have guns. The speeding ticket thing to the best of my knowledge is not true, its felony charges that stop you from purchasing firearms and even then you can get your 2nd amendment reinstated. I am kinda like the other guy if you wanna stay out of Academy...then great, maybe i can get in and out quicker....it will take a lot of people not going there to hurt their business unfortunately.

If you get a delayed status The dealer has to wait 3 working days ( not including the day you filled out your paper work or sat.or sun.)if you dont get a response by the end of the last working day you can transfer it the next day.

cant blame em
Hey I cant blame em. I know its aggravating but kenner is just a stones throw from the heart of new orleans and that place has enough problems with idiots that have guns that shouldnt soo I cant blame em for having their own agenda in that aspect. just find you a reputable dealer and deal firearms through them.

No issues
I've got a DUI from about 8 years ago and the occasional speeding ticket. I've bout a rifle from Ken's in Slidell, a shotgun at Academy, and a handgun from Slidell Arms. Not one time did I not walk out with my gun. Again, I don't have a crystal clear record, but it is nothing violent or felonies. Just stupid stuff that were very costly.
Regardless, it never even slowed me up from buying firearms.....fortunately.

Got denied too
I got denied at Academy in Shreveport years ago. I had a Kentucky drivers license and a military ID, but no sale. Went back the next day with my new Louisiana license and it only took 20 minutes to get it.

Gun Buying
Guys sometimes I get delayed sometimes I do not I am ex military and I had a CC permit at one time when we could cash and carry with them. My point I am trying to make is you can have rules as long as you disclose them. They are holding firearms that could be released after the 72 hours and no where is that stated when you fill out the paperwork in the store. Second point did anyone read the articles of the ATF going in Houston and trying to recover guns for people making multiple purchases in a month. This guy is a college student going to school to be psychologist. He went to a local gun shop and was delayed and approved in less than a day. Point being made he was given the run around by the big box retailer and the Manager there has a very poor attitude. If you have a policy disclose it to the customer up front not when they come back to retrieve the firearm. The Managers attitude alone is reason enough for me to never step foot in another one of there stores I will keep my money with the local gun shops and not send it to Texas supporting Academy and the employees that they have chosen to hire. You get what you pay far and that goes with employees as well.

i worked at academy after i got out of highschool to pay for college. yes i not the world best hunter and fisher but i do do both as much as i can. academy might have a bunch of younger kids working there but they do try to stick the ones that do hunt and fish in the outdoor section. while working there i was told i could deny a person if i wasnt comfortable with making that sale. that being said i only had to do it a few times and they were extremes trust me. as for them not handing the gun over that's academy choice. even if you are accepted by nics the salesman can deny you. as for the delaying i'm not sure why some people are delayed longer than others. i know that i did try to stay up on keeping people informed on their status as best i can. as for yo momma i tried to give people my best when i worked at academy not because of my pay but because it's what i would have wanted if i was the person shopping and if i didn't know about something there was always someone who did. and if you are all such greater hunters you shouldn't need help on making your choices.

First of all the manager is only doing his or hers job to meet Academy's policy so she can feed her family like we all do to survive.
Second Academy is like the old wal-mart or tg@y its a sports/clothing/golf/hunting fishing and what ever else they can fit in there store. No where does it say PRO-SHOP so don't expect it to be.
