Hunting after giving blood

Reply
Yeah, I don't know if this was smart, but I gave blood at that St. Elizabeth Hospital fair type that I went to with my girlfriend because she had to work it...and then I went hunting in Maurepas WMA. Bad idea, walked to a tree down a pipeline, stand on the back, got to the tree and collapsed...sat there, soaking wet against a cypress tree down the pipeline. Remembered the water I had in my pack, took it out, and drank it in sips, not gulps. Sat there with the cool breeze hitting me and making me colder. Finally thought I gathered enough strength to walk back, picked everything up, walked the 1/4 mile back to my truck, barely making it there, and then she called and asked me if I want to go to the 13th gate tonight. I got in my truck and collapsed again on my seat from the exhaustion then left. Got back, realized my pressure bandage somehow managed to come off and I had blood just dripping down my arm. Anyone else had an experience like this?

i work there, and if i see you come through the ICU i'm gonna laugh my butt off. seriously, it's not that funny and very dangerous, but i've never heard of such bad luck. stay home, drink lots of fluids and sports drinks, and eat some meat, like steak. i used to donate before going out because it was cheaper and easier getting drunk.
did you go to St. Amant?

Come on man! With a name like Iron Man that should be nothing!lol Seriously though, did you get any medical advice? That doesn't sound right.

they will normally take a bit more to account for lab tests (to make sure you weren't lying on the questionaire). if you're at least an average sized guy and don't have any medical problems it shouldn't have affected you that much. that said going on a 1/4 mile trek through the swamp can put quite a burden on any heart, much less a young one.
i was asking about school when i asked about St. Amant. we had the iron man contest every year, just wondering if that's were you got the name.

You experienced whats called a fluid volume deficit. Also, let me guess, when you go from a lying to a seated or standing position too fast you feel faint momentarily? This is a phenomena called orthostatic hypotension, which is basically your blood pressure falling upon standing. it is due to your lack of RBC's (red blood cells)these cells systimically perfuse all of your tissues with oxygen, so when your walking along this pipeline your skeletal muscles are metabolizing all of your O2, therefore your brain gets a lack of O2 and you experience a syncopal episode (fainting)
Don't be alarmed though, the average life cycle of a RBC is 120 days, and your body is continously making new ones because of this. In the future, after donating blood, you should drink plenty of fluids, and also eat foods that are rich in iron, like red meats, green leafy vegetables, and iron fortified cereals. Iron is important because your body transforms it into heme which is the makeup of RBC's, and each heme molocule carries four molocules of oxygen, so if you do the math; basically the more iron you intake, the quicker you will rebuild your blood supply. You should also not exert as much energy for a few days post donation. It might be a good idea to take at least one day off of hunting, this will give your body time to return to homeostasis. Well, hope that helps, let me know if you have anymore medical questions.
