A friend of mine and I were talking today and he was telling me about a problem he has at his duck hunting lease. The cattails and marsh have completly taken over the potholes he has been hunting. I told him I would ask the "experts" here on this site and we would find him a answer to his problem.
The marsh completly covered all the ditches and filled in the holes. The go devil was used to bust a ditch about 100 yds long but that took about 5 hours and lots of sweat. So the question is what do you guys think the best way bust through the marsh without using any kind of chemicals to kill it?
.... there is about 3 foot of water and the cattails are about 5 foot tall.

I have seen a special rake made for hydrilla problems and so forth. Not sure if it would work for this problem but might be worth a try.You pull it behind a boat or by hand with ropes.Or you could always invite a bunch of guys with surface drives and have a mud fest!

Well there are a few things you possibly could do. THe first is trying to burn the marsh. Another is spraying which would open spots but also kill your feed. Probably the best method but expensive, is get a marsh master with a bushog and start cutting away. Hope this helps.

You will want to purchase some 2-4-D Aquatic from a local distributor. I believe specialty feed stores may have it or garden stores. The trick is to use this product in the spring to early summer. To maintain your food source under the water the best application would be through the use of a backpack sprayer. Apply directly to the plants you want to get rid of. It may take a little time but this method is highly effective. If it's relatively dry in the area during lat summer, I also suggest applying Biologic Guide's Choice Waterfowl seed to the area. Makes a real good hunting hole sir.

This may be a dumb question, but what is the difference between that 2-4-d aquatic and something like roundup? What's the advantages?

The Aquadic version won't kill the fish or other aquadic plants and animal that live in the water. You arn't suppost to use round-up or regular 2-4-d around any areas that act as a run-off during rain or around water sources. It poisones the water .

That chemical will work, but you have to have and show an "applicators license" to buy it. It is a 46% yield product. One quart chemical into 50 gallons of water and a cup or so of Dawn detergent. Always spray down wind of yourself. Pretty nasty stuff, was also used in Nam with agent orange. ARRIVE ALIVE!!!
