Screen on lower unit

Reply
Hey guys, I am looking for some help on a subject. I have seen some crawfisherman in the past with some kind of window screen on their outboards. I know it is to keep grass out of the water pickups. Does anyone know what they use and how they do it? I have been running through a lot of grass lately and get tired of having to cleen out my pick up screens.

My dad uses this on his crawfish boat. All it is is stainless steel wire mesh with about 1/8 holes in the mesh. You don't want to small a hole in your screen cause you will defeat your purpose. Now the thing is that you need it long enough to rap around the front of the lower unit and stopping at the back. Use two stainless steel hose clamps to hold the screen around the lower unit. The screen should be all one piece to go around the lower unit to grab both water pick ups and wide enough to be able to clamp with the hose clamps.Depending on what motor you have my dads screen is eight inches wide by 20 inches long. Take the screen and fold it in half and where the fold is you put to the front of the lower unit and the two ends go towards the back or prop. Center it over your water pick ups and place your two stainless hose clamps to grab the outer edge of the screen and tighten very tight. The hose clamps should be all one clamp times two. My dad runs all over in the grass with his. Now you will need to clean the screen time to time so he carries a steel brush with him to clean the screen. Hope this helps. Nothing totally stops the grass from stopping the water pick ups from clogging but this should help Fish On Line

I tried that, and it worked pretty well. I was just getting other ideas

the 1/8 stainless hardware cloth wrapped and secured by long hose clamps put together to make it longer works like a charm--seen it done and used

I have a budy in Henderson that does them, you have to tig weld through the screen hole with An aluminium filler rod to tie it in to the foot
