Read the petetion just like everything else in this state always looking at the same parishes in this state west of Baton rouge. We never hear anything where we hunt. Even though most of our bucks are killed in janurary. In fact we always do pretty good because we are out there hunting. I think we should just let you guys hunt until you fill all your tags all year. And you still will have a tough time at that if you are sitting on horn spreads and sitting over grass plot. Good luck..We hunt area 6 to and you never hear us complain about hunting seasons its a tough sport. Thats why its called hunting..............

Good Like It Is
Personally I like Dave's proposal just like it is. He did a an exceptional job and I am very comfortable opening bow season on Nov. 1st.

Agreed. I think it's great. I would much rather hunt in good conditions vs the heat, snakes, and mosquitoes

As a long time area 6 hunter I really don't see any reason to change the season. The peak of the rut has always been from around christmas until mid january. There has always been earlier and later rutting activity, but if you will visit any of the area deer processors, you will see when the good bucks come in.
If anyone saw that 6 pt. that Dave Moreland put in the Morning Advocate a few weeks ago you would see that it was run down. I really can't see why some hunters want to kill every rutting buck in the woods.Everyone has had ample opportunity to kill a couple of nice bucks with the long season we have.

That's The Point
But Cap'n Phil that's exactly one of the points Dave made. Yes his six point showed the rigors of the rut but at least it had the opportunity to breed some does. Our bucks killed before January have typically not bred any does.

It doesn't take a whole lot of bucks to breed the does, but it seems that people are saying they aren't being killed until they rut.I can't imagine why hunters want to kill a run down buck anyway ,I've done it lots of times and whack the horns off and wonder what to do with that meat that feels like rubber. The later they are killed the worse they get.It doesn't hurt to leave some for seed.

Nocturnal??
I think a lot of people are missing the main point. If a mature buck is not rutting, he'll be laid up most of the daylight hours due to pressure of all the people in the woods hunting. Most of the time, the only time you'll get a chance to take a trophy is during the rut, when the bucks get stupid chasing does. Since in area 6 we don't get to hunt the rut, your chances of killing a trophy are a lot less than other areas where their deer are rutting just after the season starts. The few buck we've been taking are younger guys. I wish it were as simple as having all the deer in the state rut at the same time, but it just doesnít happen like that. If they slide the season back a month like in David's proposal, we'll be able to hunt the same amount of day and still have a good opportunity to get a mature buck during the rut. I know everyone has different opinions and I hope there aren't any feelings hurt by others voicing their opinion. I think if the guys in our area ever get a chance to go to an area where the rut is in full swing in November and hunt, they would change their mind about our season.

I'm not sure about all of area 6,I hunt in the Grosse Tete area, and I can assure you that the primary rut took place before the end of gun season.I saw more mature bucks waiting to be skinned between jan 1 and jan 15 than all of the rest of the season combined. The good bucks dribbled in after that. There is no doubt there is a secondary rut in feb,but the primary is earlier.I have hunted this area over 40 years and have always seen a few late born fawns.

I hunt in Ramah just north of the interstate. Severl of the guys at our place have land on Rosedale Road and on Hwy. 190 in West Baton Rouge. They told me the same thing that you're saying, but it wasn't happening in the spillway. If they would slide the season for the spillway, it would also cover the area where you are and other areas where everyone would get to hunt the rut. The way it is now, we in the spillway don't get that chance. Do you think it would hurt your hunting in Gros Tete if they start on November 1st???

Area 1
Part of Area 1 and southwest mississippi is the same way. I know the deer around Wilson rut early season, I heard something about them being implants from when stocking the area.
But the deer in Norwood, St. Francisville, Woodville, Ft Adams, all along the river, had a very late rut that is explained just like the area 6 rut. We need to start pushing to do something in area 1. Im not a biologist, so Im not sure of anything, but in my opinion something needs to be done.

I don't know that it would hurt the hunting,I just don't think its necessary to fragment the area like that. One of my best friends is a landowner in the basin south of 190 and north of you.His deer rutted the same time as ours.

I read one biologist explain it that mother nature altered the breeding season over many, many years to all does to drop their young after the flood waters from annual floods recede. This gives their young a better survival rate. Areas that donít flood, seem to have earlier breeding seasons. This makes since for Grosse Tete and Ramah area. Ramah is inside the levee system, thus flood every year and Grosse Tete doesnít food every year. Iím sure itís the same for the area that youíre talking about around the Mississippi River area.

Losing hunting days should not be the issue!
WHY SHOULD WE BE CONCERNED ABOUT LOSING HUNTING DAYS WHEN WE HAVE ONE OF THE ONLY HUNTING SEASON DATES IN THE STATE IN WHICH WE CANNOT HUNT THE PRIMARY AND SECONDARY RUTS. I WOULD RATHER GIVE UP A FEW HOT MISERABLE DAYS OF HUNTING THAN GIVE UP THE CHANCE TO HUNT DURING PRIME TIME WHEN MY ODDS OF HARVESTING A GOOD DEER IS BEST! KENNY D, I AGREE WITH YOU 110 PERCENT. THINGS ARE DIFFERNT IN THE NORTHERN PART OF AREA 6 THAN THE SOUTHERN. WAYNE, YOU'VE NEVER HUNTED UP HERE SO YOU DON'T KNOW A THING ABOUT OUR RUT IN OUR AREA. WE NEED TO BE ABLE TO HUNT OUR PRIME TIME LIKE THE REST OF THE STATE AREAS. I WOULD VOTE FOR GUN SEASON NOT TO OPEN UP UNTIL DEC. 18 AND THAT WAY WE WOULDNT BE STINKING UP THE WOODS AND EDUCATING THE BIG BOYS WE ARE AFTER.

Petition for Area 6 season changes!
Maby there should be a petition to devide area 6,I see most of the people wanting to change the seasons are Basin area hunters. I don't find anything wrong with the season in the part of area 6 that I hunt which is the St.James, St.John area.

AREA 6 SEASON CHANGE
Talked to a biologist today and asked him about this change. If this happens all of area 6 would not be affected.Only 3 parishes.I think he said IBERVILLE,POINTE COUPEE AND WEST BATON ROUGE.This would be an experiment for these parishes and maybe if it worked they would consider all of area 6.The 3 parish area may become area 9.I hunt area 6 around ST JAMES parish and I am in a DMAP club that has been working with biologist on this study and other studies.

Northern area 6..............
I hunt in area 6(Lake Ophelia NWR). I have personally seen SEVERAL very young fawns through the 3rd week in November!!! The refuge date already is November 1st and I think its great. You still have to be on your toes for fawns, they r everywhere!!! I may be a little partial due to the fact that I have bowhunted exclusively for the last 6 years, but I would personally like to see maybe a 9 day gun season in late November then a 9 day gun season in mid to late January with maybe 2 three day primitive weapon splits in between. However we know this is Louisiana and that will NEVER happen...lol
