Yeah man if ur going to Big Lake the best spot to try is the weirs. You can get on Biglake411.com and they have a detailed map. Other than that, like Warren said there is too much freshwater right now. Also if ur in a small boat u need to watch out for the weather cause Big Lake is notorious for getting crazy bad when the wind and weather picks up.

Big Lake is No Place for small Boats till Winds Calm!!!!
I have a 24 footer and was caught last week in 25 to 30 MPH winds and it was brutal. They don't call it Big Lake for nothing. You can stick to the marsh or north end(210 area is protected and holding some fish) . But please, Be Safe and Carefull!!!!!

Salinity in Big Lake
The salinity is starting to go up. The Specks should be moving in soon.

With small boat stay on north end or launch on hwy 27 or launch at spicers and go west. But when wind is in forecast stay away from main lake and ship channel with small boat.

15 or 16 foot
i got a 15 or 16 foot bass boat i guess thats still to small for big lake

16 ft
I have a 16' right now and let me tell you it gets rough enough in Lake Chuck on a windy day. You need to get a full days forecast for wind if you go out. Like the Admiral said, the water in that lake gets crazy real quick...Good Luck!

calm days
If you have a small boat and the weather is calm enough try joes cove and the southwest end of west cove for the reds, and if its windy theres a launch in the wildlife area in the very west side of west cove off highway 27, also try the old river bed in the south end of the lake if the weather permits

Tiny boat
Don't let em scare you. I fish Big Lake in a 15 foot bass boat all the time. The only place I stay away from is the Jettys, not because of the wind but because of the crew boats.
When the wind gets up and the swells get high I just slow down and time it so i don't nose in. I will probably be there this weekend. Marine forecast calls for calm.
p.s. I don't like to fish in the wind. But I aint sceered.

fishing big lake out of 15 ft flat
I have fished in big lake for 11 years out of a 15 ft flat. My advice is to look at the marine forcast and only go if it says smooth waters. That is the best conditions for bay boats and small boats. Pick the launch closest to areas that will be easiest to fish on the day you go if the forecast calls for wind.
