"Anyone can kill a deer but it takes a man to kill a varmint." — by varmints he meant the animals we now call predators and dangerous game

This thick bearded mountain man hunted from the far northern states to the southern states on the west side of the country. He also hunted his uncles farm in Morehouse Parish, Louisiana and he guided Teddy Roosevelt on a bear hunt in Tensas Parish. Born in 1856 and died on December 17, 1936. He was a very decorated hunter mostly known for kiliing cougars, wolves, grizzly bears and black bears right here in Louisiana.

Ben Lilly's a character in one of the Lonesome Dove movies. It's called Streets of Laredo. The character looked pretty much like this man. Good movie, by the way. I have the box set with Lonesome Dove, Streets of Laredo, and Dead Man's Walk. I like them all, but Lonesome Dove's my favorite.
