BOAT INSURANCE

Reply
Just looking for a few opinions, I have a 1998 champion of which I bought new and have always carried boat insurance. It runs right at $36 a month. The boat is in good condition for its age, the motor of course has corrosion in some areas, the trailer will soon have to be replaced. I love the boat and have no plans to get rid of it any time soon. Should I keep paying the $36 or just take my chances. I am also able to do simple fiberglass work. I have calculated paying over $5000 in the 12 years of having the boat. The money is not the question but how long should you keep insurance on a boat?????????????? thanks

as long as it's worth more than you want to dish out for another one just like it -same age same motor etc-plus the ins you have has liability besides the replacement coverage doesnt it?

Don't only consider the boat itself but the liability protection that insurance provides should you hit a stump or other object and people get hurt. I think it is well worth it...plus your boat is covered too.

Yeah, I'd definitely keep it. But it never hurts to compare rates with another company. That seems like a lot to me, I pay just over $100 a year with Progressive.

I had a prodrive boat and motor worth about 10 grand. I paid cash so never insured it cause I figured it would never happen to me. Needless to say I came home from work about a month later and it was gone. Homeowners doesn't cover it either.

With that being said I would keep the insurance. I actually consider myself lucky to have learned the way I did. i still want my boat back and I will still castrate the person who stole it but I would hate to be the guy that learns his lesson because his good buddy is out with him and gets seriously injured. Now your buddy can't work anymore because he lost his leg in your non insured boat and also has to attempt to sue you for what little you have so he can atleast attempt to keep his family fed and keep his leg from getting infected.

Now I keep a high limit of liability and full coverage. I bet the difference in price by dropping the comp and collision is not worth even discussing.

Try progessive they have good rates, with all the people on the water keep you some good liability.

Be carefull with them. They might be inexpenses but can be very hard to deal with if you have a claim. I found out the hard way. I have total coverage with Allstate, home vehicles and both boats. With total coverage their boat insurance is very competive. Also, I have had sereral clains on the boats with Allstate and never had a problem with them.

Ole Speck I am glad you had good luck with allstate, I had them for 3 weeks and they came out and took a picture of my chow in his pen and they canceled my insurance,Hopefully none of ever need our insurance.

Thanks for all the input, I probably will keep insurance but maybe look around for a better deal. At the very least I will keep liability, b/c you never know what is going to happer out there.

I know first hand about Ins. Just quick search Stolen Boat. As most of you guys on here know my 2010 bay boat was stolen and found striped last month. I had GEICO but they wrote through American Modern Ins. which I have had no problems with yet. If I was you I would keep the insurance and check how much of your contents are covered. I only had $1000 and thought I had $5000. Needless to say 2 Shimano Cumora rods 1 Shimano Cronarc Mg50 reel and a Shimano E7 were only 2 of the 10 poles stolen not counting tackle, life jackets, nets, etc. Also Ins. is not only for you but its for people with you or people who dont have Ins. that might hit you. Like they say "Its better to be safe than sorry."

Not trying to tell you your business but I own an insurance company and write for many companies and most companies out there will not write home insurance when you own rottweillers, chows and pitt bulls for sure even the insurance will not write it if they know about it. Trust me this is not an Allstate issue this is 98 percent of all ins. companies Good luck. I am not downing the Chow I have owned two rotts and had Allstate and another company but got the dogs after I bought policy. So could not cancel. Good Luck
