Boat Trailer

Just a curious question, but hopefully someone can answer it for me, on my boat trailer that carries a 1546 flat boat, each end of the axle for about foot was wrapped in carpet, is their reason for this, the carpet was just zipped tied there, do I need to leave it their for some reason, In my opinion it just makes me axle rust quicker cause the carpet takes longer dry. Cut that all off, it is used to protect the spindles on axle during transport. The \'dealer\' or trailer guy obviously forgot or did not care to remove it. Take it of, give it a good wirebrushing and cold galv. it. That will slow down the rust process but the rust always wins....

Thanks I did already cut it off, and then started thinking well maybe it was there for a reason, guess my next project will be brushing and galvanizing to slow it down thanks for the help
