I have been seeing reports on how tourney fishing hurts the population. Some saying 21% released survive while others say 50% survive. How can anyone come up with this ridiculas percentage when in any given tourney there may be up to 50 fish released. number 1 who follows these fish around to see the percentage? Number 2 then 25 or more fish would be floating around out there from each tourney? I don't think so. I fish a private pond alot and release every bass i catch I have yet to see ONE BASS floating.Get your facts right before making up bull crap about tourney fishing. If these fish had such a low survival rate then there would not be any hupla about catch and release. And to say a large bass has even less survival rate is ridculas also, why would replicas be ofered if everyone thought the fish would die anyway. Catch and release is good. Eating fish also good just make sure you have facts to reflct your post.

I found the article where they tagged all bass released from a tourney off the east coast somewhere and the percentages were between 21 and 28 percent of fish killed. The same study was done in a lake in Texas (I Think) and the same results were found.
I hate to hear this kind of stuff because I LOVE to fish tournaments.

Well probably the tagging procedure is what killed the fish. I still say if this was true I would be seeing more fish floating in this pond but i haven't. Any way there is no argument about tourney fishing versus receational fishing except that bass have at least a 79 % more chance of living than recreational fishing. Thay would be like me saying I wish there wasn't any recreational bass fishing alowed cause it hurts my tournament out come Stupid of course.

I know 100% of the fish that make it to the frying pan don't survive. Would some rather tournament fishermen keep everything they catch within legal limits instead of throwing them back?

People who do tagging studies always calculate how many fish die just from the tagging first. Then when they tag the fish they subtract that percent from the percent that are calculated to have died from whatever they are tagging them for.
There is a study from Texas that shows that summer tournaments in hot temperatures had as high as 35% death.
Think about it. A fish in a reservoir or lake is pulled up from a comfortable depth and temperature, put in a livewell that is continuously refilling with hot surface water and driven around for up to 8 hours before the weigh-in. At the weigh-in they are held up in the air suffocating while the angler shows the crowd the nice fish he caught while the self appointed announcer runs his mouth. Pictures are taken and the fish is put into a tank filled with many other fish before being released, if they are lucky, back into a good part of the lake. If they are unlucky they are thrown in the water at the boat ramp or into a canal.
Some of these tournaments weight-in from 400 fish up to more than a thousand fish.
On the other hand, they have been holding these tournaments for 40 years and, after all that, there are still bass to be caught in almost every body of water where they hold them.
There must be a lot more bass in these waters than most fishermen realize.
