Mercury outboard

Reply
I have a Merc 115 saltwater outboard. Started it up after sitting awhile and noticed when I parked it back w unt raised that a little oil had leaked out a small port in the lower unit. Not from any fill holes but a small hole under a fin. Looked like oil as opposed to gear oil. Seems to have stopped now. Anyone have any ideas? Not sure if it needs to go in shop or is just a lil oil in exhaust from starting after sitting a year.

Thanks.

If it is just a little bit and it's coming out of the exhaust then that is fairly normal.

If you you ran the engine with a hose and a set of 'muffs', then that is normally unburned exhaust residue. I had the same situation and thought I had a bad seal in the lower unit. Took the boat to the shop for repairs and fortunately, the mechanic I use is a good guy and told me not to worry about it. I usually leave the engine down and let the residue run down the foot and drip on a piece of old carpet before wiping the foot clean for storage.

I had the same thing happen to my 175 merc, I called the mechanic and he told me to keep an eye on it. A little oil is not much but if it continues he said it could be the seal around the shift shaft. Hope this helps!!
