New to Vermillion Bay

Reply
Thinking bout checking out Vermillion Bay due to all the Chaos with the oil spill. Am I wasting my time? I cant make heads or tails out of the usgs salinity thing, as some say 4 ppt is best or whatever. For what it's worth im way inexperienced and new to saltwater fishing and my wife refuses to go with me until i get the hang of this stuff haha. Vermillion Bay seems an obvious choice due to the proximity to Baton Rouge anyway. Any advice/pointers/tips/etc greatly appreciated.

Compared to other places on the coast, Vermilion Bay is challenging, so if you don't succeed at first, keep working at it. There is a lot of fresh water the pours in, so most times the salinity is lower than other places. Most of the trout are caught outside of the pass, but they can be found inside the bay too if you keep at it. Not sure what size boat you have, but beware of wind and storms that pop up. THe bay is big and gets pretty nasty during storms, especially in a smaller boat. Get a map and try places such as the Cove, Trash Pile, and Dry Reef if you have a decent sized boat. Marsh Island has a lot to offer, but is is about an 8 mile run over open water to get there. Good luck and be safe

Would you recommend this area for a bowfishing trip? We are looking for a alternate area for our annual trip down from Ohio. We would like to get into reds, flounder, sheepshead, and garfish...Are there protected cuts and marsh off the main bay that would be good for us to get into? How is water clarity in general? Thanks for any help. We were planning on coming down the 2nd week in July....Venice was our original destination but that appears to be out the window....Also considering Delacroix if it stays open....Thanks a bunch..

The bay stays pretty dirty until later in the summer. There are pockets of clear water here and there but for the most part it is fresh water.

Is July late enough in the summer for it to clear up? I have a fan so accessing shallow weedy areas is not a problem of any are there?

I don't think you'd have much of any luck bowfishing.. maybe some garfish thats all i can about see. We bowfish but not there. Water hardly ever stays clear

I fished the cuts of shark bayou a couple of weeks ago and could have smoked tons of gar and several sheephead. The problem would be the water clarity could change at any time out there.

Clint, I tried to respond to your PM last night and for some reason I don't think it went through. I will try again tonight for you. I marked a couple of landmarks on Google Earth to help you out.
