Anybody have any tips on how to cut through the scales on garfish to skin them. I haven't found the right tool yet, what does everybody use to clean them.

We went out of Grand Isle Friday night before the winds hit. I first cut a line straight down their back with either a heavy duty serrated knife or a skill saw. Then cut the scales back to expose the back of the gar and then clean it like you are cutting the back straps out of a deer.

Chop the back from the tail to the head using a hatchet. Take the gar and hang from a hook. With a sharp knife, cut through the folds of the scale behind the head. Take a pair of catfish skinning pliers and pull the hide off. Make sure to wear gloves when doing this, the shell is very sharp.

Another way to skin a gar is to shell it out with a sharp knife. You still chop the back from the tail to the head, then you just pass your knife between the shell and the meat.

I clean Gar with a hatchet also I love Gar and clean all I catch or that I have given to me. I was taught by an old coonass to clean them when I was younger he taught me to make a board to clean them on. I take a piece of 1/2\'\' plywood 2\' wide and 3\' to 4\' long screw down two pieces of 1x2 lumber to it in a V. Then I put a strip of metal across the end of the V to hold the gar in place. This makes it MUCH easier to clean the Gar. You lay them on the plywood in the V and push their nose to the end under the stip to keep them from moving while you cut down the back. I have used a cane knife a Machette and a hatchet. A sharp Hatchet is the best in my experience. Once I have cut down the back I use the Hatchet to cut off the head and the tail now all I have to do is to fillet the meat out. I don\'t have to even deal with the Guts. Very fast and easy. Most people don\'t eat Gar because of the way they look and because it is so difficult to clean. They don\'t know what they are missing. Cleaning them this way I can clean a 3 to 4 foot gar in 5 to 10 min.

Sorry for the late reply. I am at work and don't check the reports every day. When I get home I will post a pic. The one I have at home is getting kinda nasty. I might build a new one and post pics of it and the building of it. Will be home in a couple of weeks. Will find this post and add to it. Good luck with you bowfishing.
