Bayou Pigeon

Reply
Fished out of Bayou Pigeon landing Monday, had 6 keepers total. Had 2 keepers early in Cross Bayou/Murphy Lake on spinnerbaits. Several throw backs also on the hardwear. Moved to the Big Pigeon area(close to the lake), picked up 2 more keepers on worms(and a 15" sac). No lost of goggle-eye life in that area around the cypress trees. No keepers in the lake itself, but 12 or so throw backs. Back to Cross Bayou area, picked up 2 more keepers on crankbaits and lost 2 more on the same bait by the boat. With the moon being full, the afternoon bite was alot better.

Fishdoctor,

Do you think my buddy and I could do some damage to the goggle-eye this weekend in Pigeon? I normally fish Henderson, but that area is somewhat poor lately. I would love to catch an ice chest full of big goggle-eye before duck season. Thanks in advance.

hey mm,
the goggle eye are on fire right now. just throw some beetle spins around the cypress stumps and you'll load up. they are stacked in isolated areas so when you find one, there should be more in the area. i'm heading to adams landing tomorrow to catch a bunch myself.
good luck,
ryan

Thanks Buzz. That sounds like a great time. Post your report when you come in. I'll go Saturday if my buddy still up for it.

here is my report. it was slow all day. fished from 1-6:30 out of Adam's. caught about ten bass with only two keepers. water is really low. it was also rising pretty good too. tried runouts but no luck. all fish caught were very tight to cover. found one good runout that went about 25 yards back into the swamp. i caught five of my fish in that one area just casting back in the swamp. I caught the other five on buzz bait when the sun got low. fished for goggle eye with the beetle spin but suprisingly struck out. I can usually count on those guys tearing it up this time of year in a couple of my honey holes but they were laughing at me today. I only caught half a dozen goggles total. the water was slightly muddy in the backs of the canals. saw a lot of bait fish everywhere. things look real good since Rita. i would watch the morgan city gauge and wait till the water starts to fall. i think it is predicted to fall this weekend so i hope you tear em up. good luck

Thanks for the very imfomative report Ryan. With the price of gas these days I like to be selective about which trips to take. With this cold push and the rising water, I might wait until the conditions are a bit more inviting.

Do you ever use worms or crickets? Sometimes they'll bite the real stuff better, especially in less than favorable conditions.

Thanks again for the report. Sportsman helping sportsman-that's why I love this site.

mm,
i dont use live bait very often. i use shiners for sac-a-lait occasionally. i have found my best results for panfish come by just locating schools of them, whether it be sacs, bream, or gogs. if they arent biting in an area, dont be afraid to move on. keep changing until you find the right water and the right pattern. gogs will find stumps a lot like bass too. but, when you get into a good bed of bream or find an area concentrated with sacs, i prefer tube jigs. they are quick, cheap, and do a bit of culling for you by not catching the smaller fish that worms and crickets catch. i fish em under a cork, tightlining, and with a spinner. this technique works a lot in the basin. also, i wouldnt rule out this weekend for fishing. just check the water gauge. it was at 2.1 today from 1.8 yesterday. if it starts falling and the north wind helps push the water out, you may have some good success just before the front pushes through. best of luck

I have a ten year old boy that loves to go fishing for goggle-eye. I have read several references to these fiesty critters not only surviving the impacts of Hurrican Katrina and Hurricane Rita on the Atchafalaya Basin, but that they are literally "on-fire". I have fished Big Pigeon and Little Pigeon, Catfish Lake areas in the past with great success. Was thinking on taking "lil man" out fishing this Sunday, October 23rd after the LSU-Auburn game; otherwise we would be headed out Saturday. If anyone could be a bit more specific where the good pockets of water are located that are holding goggle-eye, "lil-man" would be very much appreciative. Thanks
