The Rut???

I am kinda new to this deer hunting thing. I bought a bottle of doe urine last year and killed the first day I tried it. This year I bought a bottle of urine and a bottle of urine with estrous. A deer hunting friend told me to make sure the rut has started before I use the estrous or it will spook the bucks. Does anybody know when the rut usually starts in area 3 (Vermilion parish marsh)? Or does it really matter that much? Thanks

For the most part the rut in your area is over. The archery season opens in Sept so the gun season can open around the rut, well that is what I understand. I have taken does during the week of Thanksgiving that have already bred.

If that's the case, should I just throw away the estrous? Does it really spook a buck after the rut? Will it get a post rut buck to stop and smell the roses or turn tail and run? Thanks again.

I don't hunt with scents, so I have no experience with the actions of the deer as far as will they run or not. You could maybe get the information you are looking for through the deer biologist with Wildlife and Fisheries.

Thanks for the reply. I will be out in the duck blind Thursday and in the tree stand Friday and I'll let you know if I got lucky or not.

I will be in the duck/goose blind in the morning and deer hunting Fiday and all weekend unless I have to guide.
