System is going down for maintenance at 7:50 CST.
We have found that the Opera Mini application seems to allow users to upload files on Android phones.
What I'm looking for is a test to determine whether individuals with Android phones and this application can do these uploads, so that we can smooth over the process for existing and new users.
You can download this app for free at:
http://www.opera.com/mobile/download/
To help us test, all you have to do is reply to this post using your Android phone and Opera Mini (or Opera Mobile), tell us the make and model of your phone (and your version of Android if possible), and then post an image.
Thanks!
This would be a test of the report body.
Everything should be back to running normally.
Folks, we've had some people call us and tell us that there have been instances of someone posting classified ads for ATVs and other equipment, then requesting money be sent to some other country.
If you're dealing with someone and you don't think they're being honest, or if it's someone trying to get you to send money outside of this country, then please, call me or email Andy at andyc@lassmag.com and let us know immediately.
There was an instance today where someone called me, I looked up the ip address, it was in the US, so I typed it into my browser and discovered that it was from a public wireless router. I had no choice but to ban that router. So let this also be a lesson: if you have a wireless router, please set it up with security or get someone to do it for you.

Putting the final touches on some optimization work and had a few errors during the migration. Some queries that took a half-second now take fractions of a millisecond and have cut CPU utilization about 70%. It's been interesting to see how we can squeeze performance out of this thing.
Thank you for your patience and let me know if you run into any bugs.
You might see a few technical difficulties, but I am actively monitoring the error logs.

Our classifieds ads are now once again sorted by the times which the ads are modified. So please, no multiple ads for the same product or service.
If you momentarily see an error message, it's just me breaking the system temporarily to get a few tweaks in there.
Guys, we have a classifieds ads section on this site. Please use it when you want to post items for sale or trade. I just had to remove two posts (both shrimp related) that were otherwise non-offensive, but don't belong in the forum.
Due to a server issue, we had to reset our security software on the server. We are currently in the process of retraining this software. If you have any problems posting an ad or viewing a post, please send me an email at webmaster@lasmag.com with the following information:
(1) your login name or alias
(2) what you were trying to do at the time
(3) your ip address - you can find this at http://www.whatismyip.com
Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.
We're aware of the problem with the system sending out multiple newsletters. There was a software glitch caused by human error that has been corrected.
Here at the Sportsman we have people who have been chosen to be moderators on the site. If you aren't a moderator, then you weren't chosen for the job. Sorry.
But the moderators have other jobs that are their main priorities. We can't sit here and simply watch posts all day. I develop the software that runs this site. Others write articles or answer questions. We might be busy generating a new magazine, I might be busy building and testing new features that you don't even know about, etc, etc.
Here's the deal: the only person who can control what you post is you. If you have a problem with what someone posted, then contact a moderator or email me. My email address is very easy to find, it's at the bottom of every page of every site that is associated with the Sportsman. Like I said, I don't read the site all day, so the best way to contact me is to email me. I do check my email every hour or two when I'm at work.
Every time someone gets into a shouting match or a cursing spat, it takes time away from my or someone else's main responsibilities and forces me to play catch up. Imagine being at work and trying to concentrate on a problem, and every hour or two, you get a call from your kids' teacher because he's causing problems in class. That's MY life with regards to the message board. :)
When I go to look at someone's post or comment history, I don't care about context. All I care about is the content of the posts. Most of you guys are doing fine. Some of you have decided to turn this place into your personal grudge match hangout, and that needs to stop. Hint, hint, East vs. West people.
If you get banned, there's likely a very good reason for it, and the #1 response is always "but person X did this, so if you're gonna ban me, ban him too." Don't care. That's context, not content. It'd be a dream to go a month without having to show someone an unexpected exit.
C'mon guys. It's spring. Go fishing or something and leave the grudges to the kids on the playgrounds. Make your webmaster happy. :)
Please do not post entire articles from other websites.
Doing so infringes upon their copyright. If you have an article you wish to discuss, then you can add a brief synopsis and a link to the other site.
Thank you.
Sorry, it's something I'm looking into. The new image system rotates images to the correct aspect ratio, but somehow loses color quality with certain images. Trying to pinpoint where it's happening.
If these are supposed to go with another fishing report, let me know which one and I'll group them with the correct report.

I'm going to get in touch with the ad provider tomorrow to see if they can either resolve the issue or remove the ad from our network. This issue happens when there is an item that needs to run flash from another server but has not downloaded a file which tells the item that it can run anywhere. To my knowledge, the people who are affected by this are users with older versions of internet explorer. In most browsers, this error happens silently in the background and is logged in the console, but apparently older versions of IE lack this feature and will pop up an error window instead.
Some service providers like Cox and Comcast have recently started to inject javascript directly into webpages as they pass through their servers. I don't know whether this has anything to do with any access denial issues. We have also had a recent issue with one of our advertising providers that we are in the process of trying to correct that may impact users with older browsers, specifically IE.
If anything gets removed through the system, I'll know about it, because we have a logging system that keeps track of everything that gets removed in the system.
And I can almost guarantee that nobody has tampered with the log, because I'm the only one who has ever seen the thing and would know how to interpret the contents.
... this saves a cookie on your browser to keep track of your sorting method. You don't need to select it on every page. Whichever one is NOT the link is the one that you are currently using.
I would recommend that if you're going to do business with someone, get them to call you so that you can get their phone number on your caller ID. If they aren't willing to talk to you over the phone, you probably shouldn't be doing business with them.
There was an issue with our firewall. Should be good to go now.
Earlier tonight, I was doing mass updates of a database on the server. If the pages are loading slow for you, it's likely your connection. You can always reduce the number of results you see per page in your user preferences. This will speed up your individual page load.
To clarify:

will give you the classic reports.

will give you the forum look and feel.
Internet Explorer 7 was released in 2006 and it is as far back as we will support browsers. Most modern websites have completely stopped supporting IE 6. IE 8, Chrome, Firefox, and Safari are all freely available and work with the site.
There are many choices one can use for a browser, but given the resources I have (aka time in the week I have to work on things), it is a smarter and not to mention SAFER choice to keep that window at 4 years. Browser vendors often stop supporting bug fixes for older versions a few years after the release of a newer version. Hackers love the older versions of these browsers because the vendors ignore them.
We turned the reports system on this site over from version 2 to version 3 in July, and we have changed nothing regarding the layout in the subsequent months. I will eventually address the reports/forum view separation with a control on the page as opposed to the navigation bar.
But for now, if you run with IE6 or some ancient version of AOL, it's in your best interests to upgrade.

... some people like to view things in a condensed format, but we didn't want to alienate the users we have by changing things drastically on them. We did make an announcement when we made the switch.
So they're there to accommodate whatever your taste may be, and we may refine this in the future.
I had an old version of the file that allows for sending of emails and saved it without changing it, but the software I use to edit the files at home has a setting that I did not change. The setting automatically uploads files upon saving. Should be fine now.
Friday, the server had some congestion issues because I was running some huge scripts on the same server for another site, modifying and upgrading data. No getting around that. Monday will likely see more of the same until I can get this work finished.
We may have momentary periods of slowness periodically over the next week, but after that, it will be fine, and I will have time to work on small issues that come up.
If a report has been removed or disapproved or locked by a moderator, then you will be unable to comment on that post. I have changed the wording on the error message so that it is clearer.
I've been busy making some changes, but I haven't touched the live system in a few weeks, barring a minor edit to an email template.

You mean the drop down? They're under 'General.'
What's been happening is that Google and Yahoo and a few other huge search engines seem to be hitting the site at the same time, and I've been optimizing and re-engineering parts of the site to increase efficiency, up to 57000% in some cases. Tomorrow I'm going to tackle the Classifieds section, which should hopefully eliminate most of the remaining issues.
Update: Most of the issues I have received via email from Andy will be resolved by end of day Wednesday. I need to optimize the Forum view and look into an issue with our categories, and then will be free to knock out all the little tweaks and bug fixes.
