This is 2010 and not 1995 isn't it?

November 16, 2010 at 6:51pm

Three man limit Saturday, Sunday and today. Lost two this morning, came out with 16 birds in hand. Big ducks starting to show up and work the spread!!

Good luck to all

November 15, 2010 at 12:23pm

Good Kaplan opener! Three man limit of 13 teal and 5 spoony da bills!!

Geese are still around but have relocated to other fields.

Any reports on Gueydan?

November 13, 2010 at 11:02am

Just got back from putting the decoy spread out. The birds or still there, huge flocks of ducks and geese. Pintail galore, snows, blues and specks landed and flying everywhere.

Wont sleep tonight!! Good luck to all in the morning and be safe.

Later, ducknut!

November 12, 2010 at 11:17am

Went to the lease this morning and all I can say is WOW!!! I personally have not seen this many ducks and geese down in these numbers this early since the 90's. I'm not sure if and when the LDWF will fly a survey but I'm very interested to see their findings.

Good luck to all, I may jinks us but it's good to dream that this season may remind us of the good old day's.

November 06, 2010 at 7:17pm

Spoke to my hunting partner this morning and got some GOOD news! Ducks and specks are stacked up south west of Kaplan. Snows and blues are showing up also. Come on November 13th, it's still early but weather shows another front on are around opening day! I don't think I'll have a good nights sleep until then. Anyone have reports?

Later, ducknut!

November 04, 2010 at 9:52pm

I made a trip to the lease yesterday afternoon southwest of Kaplan and I was impressed with what I saw. Specklebelly's are thick and saw plenty of teal, spoonbill, greys, pool doo and even a few mallards. Our rice fields havent been flooded yet but flooded rice stubble across the road was covered up with ducks. I'm impressed thus far, can't wait for opening day! Anyone else seeing birds in the Kaplan area? Hey pool doo I was doing the moon walk down our levee, the specks were telephone post high over our blind!!

October 26, 2010 at 3:05pm

We were not disapointed this morning. Two man limit before the sun broke the tree line. The teal were like mosquitos on our lease in Forked Island with a grey thrown in for good measures.

Good luck to all,

November 14, 2009 at 3:45pm

Slow morning in Forked Island. Four hunters four teal, not many shots heard and not many birds seen. Hope things improve, can't get much worse. Good luck to all.

September 12, 2009 at 4:05pm

My wife threw my March issue away, it had an article on a commercial fishermen and river shrimp. I need the name and number of the commercial fishermen in or around Patterson that sells river shrimp. Later, ducknut!

May 06, 2009 at 2:57pm

13 green wings and 1 spoony south of gueydan this morning. No wind, hot, foggy and skeeters. Not good duck weather but a decent hunt with these conditions on any day besides opening morning would have been empty skys with birds rafted on open water, Ill take limits of teal anyday (Sa' Ce' Bon!)

Later, ducknut!

November 10, 2007 at 12:49pm

Went to the lease south of Gueydan Thursday to bufallo the teal cut. Saw one drove of around 30 and a few smaller flocks. Also saw a few mottles, alot of love bugs and a whole lot of heat. Anyone else seeing any numbers of teal in this or other areas? The full moon should have brought some birds down with more ariving daily!!!!!!!!!!! Good luck to all and stay safe, bring your family hunting and fishing unless your wife is realy agrivating and you need to get away! LOL am I glad I have a good one. Later, ducknut!

September 01, 2007 at 12:08pm

Relaxing week at the Bend! Enjoyed some R&R and time with the family. We were able to get on a decent bream and catfish bite in 15'to 20' depth. Water was high and somewhat stained but we had no problem finding good water. Main area fished all week was North but close to Pendleton Bridge. Good time had by the wife and kids, didnt try the bass bite due to this. Iwould rather watch them enjoy catching bream and cats any day! Good luck to all! (The big cat went 9lbs) Later, ducknut!!

August 05, 2007 at 3:14pm

Fished Vermilion Bay today with no luck. We weren't able to fish hard due to the kids complaining all morning. But it was well worth the complaints just having them with us. Also had the pleasure of meeting up with an inconsiderate tug boat throwing a two foot + wake and swamping us. Two croakers made it to the boat. Probably thirty or forty boats in the area we were fishing and no one was catching. No tide movement equals no fish. Well still a great day on the water.

Well the west zone 06/07 season has come to an end once again. Another handfull of memories to reflect on in the years to come. My best memory to date and the one I will hold dearest until my time here is up happend this year. I introduced my three year old to his first duck/goose hunt, (boy did that bring back the memories of me and my dad). His first fishing and crabbing trip was over the summer and now that duck season is over he is already asking daily to go fishing and crabbing. This summer its time to start bringing the little girl, man isn't this what its all about. As per my hunting partner Saturday and Sunday were both scratches, unbelivable with the weather and hunt that I had Tuesday. Well after calculating numbers the season total is 30 hunts 212 ducks 12 geese one blind. God bless, and remember to take a kid hunting and fishing. Later, ducknut!

January 23, 2007 at 2:20pm

Well I made my last hunt of the season in the rain this afternoon. What a way to end the season; two greenheads, two mottles, 1 greenwing, and 1 ring neck (aka yankee bluebill) in the rain. Total count as of today 207 ducks 10 geese out of one blind. My hunting partner will close out the season this week and I will post our final count. Well good luck to all on closing out the season we are very thankful for a great season this year hope the birds treat everyone right until Sunday. Plenty of new birds with this front, all birds worked great! Later, ducknut! A few pics.

January 15, 2007 at 7:28pm

Hunted in the rain this afternoon and I was glad I decided to make the hunt. Three greenheads (ok it was three squealers), two bluewing teal, one drake shovler, that sounds better than one spoonbill. The spoony was in full plumage and looking hansom. Great flight in the rain this evening south of Gueydan. Did anyone else hunt the rain this afternoon? Good luck to all! Later, ducknut!

December 21, 2006 at 8:05pm

Well three week vacation is over and so is the first split for me. Final count for the first split out of one blind 106 ducks, 6 geese south of Gueydan. I saw a good number of large droves flying south this morning ahead of the front headed down. From what I saw this morning the first split should close out with a bang, go figure! Good luck to all and may many ducks drink canal water. Later, ducknut!!

A comment titled: Ruddy in response to a report titled: Ruddy Duck

I have been duck hunting since I stoped wearing diapers. Tagged along with my dad and played the role of retriever until I was old enough to shoot. I have never killed or seen a Ruddy duck in person besides pictures. Over the years my stomping grounds included Forked Island, Gueydan, Kaplan and the Atchafalaya Basin. I do have a friend that killed a Ruddy on Attakapaw a few years ago, and a lease member killed one I guess around 15 years ago in Gueydan. For me it would be a rare kill and an appreciated kill as all ducks are trophies in my eyes. I like to eat teal, I like to work greenheads and pintail, I love to shoot all ducks.

What area do you hunt around Gueydan? I hunted south of town against the Intracoastal by T Rouge landing for about ten years.

I have some good memmories from my old stomping grounds! I hope things pick up for you!

I'm leasing off of South Liberty farm road, saw a good bit of ducks and specks last week. Are you close to that area? I'll be heading that way on Friday, will post a report of what we see!

A comment titled: Dead in response to a report titled: Stephensville Fish?

Fished Stephensville last Friday with one blow up on a top water chug bug. Talked to a few guys at their camps on Four Mile Bayou and they said that since the storm all they are catching is catfish. More damage done by the fish kills due to the hurricane than expected.

A comment titled: May god be with you all in response to a report titled: What went wrong?

My prayers go out for Mr. Hebert, his family, friends and the sports that he was sharing one of his passions with in their time of grief.

While afield may we all use this unforunate event as a tool to realize that accidents can happen to anyone. Don't be afraid to remind your hunting partners of the importance of safety, if you have been hunting together one day or thirty years take the time to mention and practice safety.

Forget about any arguments or frustrations you have with your loved ones give them a hug and tell them you love them. Remember that every time you do and say it may be the last time so mean it. Appreciate what you have and don't sweat the small stuff.

Merry Christmass and Happy New Year to all. God bless you!

Later, ducknut!

A comment titled: choupique patties!!!! in response to a report titled: Jug-fishing

I don't understand how people can consider these fish trash. Start off as if you would be filleting the fish. Make your first cut along the spine flip the slab over on it's scales. Use a spoon to scrape off the meat. Boil some potatoes and smash them. Mix potatoes, cut bellpepper, cut onion, cut onion top, fish and seasoning to taste. Roll into balls or patties ( I find the balls will stay together easier untill you master the recipe then switch to patties). Make a wet beer, egg and fish fry batter. Dip the balls in wet batter then cover with dry fish fry. Deep fry, add fried jalepena hush puppies and ketchup to your plate. Open a cold beer of your flavor and ala-mongere my friend. My dad and I used to catch stringers of them in Forked Island at the camp. I have pictures of him and I when I was four years old (man how time fly's) holding up stringers of choupique. Everyone would laugh at our trash fish, my old man would laugh with a cold miller lite, a plate full of choupique patties and frog legs also caught at the camp. Boy 870 wingmaster you brought up some old memmories for me. My old man died in May of 93 but the memmories remain. I pray that I can give my son the memmories he left me. It's great to see your kids enjoying what you love, believe me they will remember and cherish the times outdoors you have with them forever.
Thanks, 870. Later, ducknut!

Fished six hours yesterday, caught two bass and this huge bream. Saw more commercial fishermen, gar fish and alligators than ever before. Water was stained, 62 degrees, and no fish.

A comment titled: out of commision in response to a report titled: Lease Value?

I was out of commision the entire first split and limited on the second split due to family issues. Man do priorities change once the wife and kids or in the picture. My hunting partner managed a couple hundred birds. Where is your property?

A comment titled: $$$$$$ in response to a report titled: Lease Value?

One blind will go for 3K to 5K. 100 birds is below average for the area even with limited hunting. I have leased and hunted marsh and rice fields south of Gueydan since 93 and have many memories of spectacular hunts. It isn't like it used to be but you will kill.

A comment titled: Over the limit man!!! in response to a report titled: FINALLY!!!

Your over your limit man! The two cripples made your limit, as per regulations they are included in the limit. Cleaning up one more had you breaking the law. Don't we all do it though, lol!!! Congratulations on a limit. The ducks are stacked up thick south of Gueydan and along Hwy 14 around Mulvey and Wright. Corner of 711 and 14 loaded with pintail and spoony's. Birds are staying put though, fields with no hunting pressure are holding huge amounts of birds. Good luck to all closing out the west zone tomorrow! Later, duck nut.

A comment titled: The edge in response to a report titled: Marsh/Swamp Hunting Question:

Hunt the line where the marsh and swamp meet. Find a well used trail at this point and set up. The deer will lay up in the marsh during the day and you can catch them coming and going morning and afternoon. You have an ideal situation to hunt wet fronts. Trust me don't let the rain keep you out of your stands. It is amazing how easily these deer walk the flotan marsh, which is humus basicly rotted vegetation matted together floating on open water. They curl their hooves and run on their legs not to bust through.

A comment titled: birds are down in response to a report titled: kaplan / gueydan area

Went brush the blind Saturday south of Gueydan. We saw large numbers of geese from Hwy 14 starting around Mulvey heading west then south of Gueydan to the Intracoastal. We also saw a few large droves of big ducks while brushing the blind and a couple hundred acres of flooded rice full of ducks across the canal from our blind. Looking good for the 10th. Good luck! Later duck nut.

A comment titled: It works! in response to a report titled: mosquito nightmare

The thermacell is a god send. I am a firm beliver in it, the thing works. Buy one it is cheap and it works. One butane cartridge last 12 hours and one mat 4 hours. You get one cartridge and 3 mats per refill pack. You will here fellow hunters without one complaining and you can be in the same area as them with no problems. Good luck afield and go get a thermacell. Later, ducknut!
