New To Sportsman Network?

After reading the La Sportsman article about the dangers of using deer urine I ran across a great podcast about CWD, it's well worth the listening time. It's a serious issue, hopefully it doens't get a foothold in La:

It doesn't matter how much you spend on a gun, whatever you buy you still have to shoulder it and shoot it in an effective manner. Do yourself a favor and visit a real gun shop, shoulder several different guns, move around like you would in a blind and then make a decision. Any of the guns you mentioned have their fans and detractors, buy the one that fits you best. Then spend some time patterning it and you'll be happy in the end.

You can legally hunt in the evening on private land. But if you're in a club be sure to ask the club president, many clubs don't allow evening hunting to give the birds time to rest.

A comment titled: Confusion? in response to a report titled: duck stamp by vendor

The state has nothing to do with the federal stamp, and the state stamp has been electronic issue for years. I think there's some confusion, why would the state collect for the federal stamp?

A comment titled: Strange indeed in response to a report titled: What kind of duck?

I agree, a strange season. The weather (presumably) pushed sea ducks down that winter in the great lakes region, and if you read the news Arctic Owls were down in the lower 48 in record numbers this year. But somehow in SE La. it was one of the worst seasons ever. I shot lees than a box of shells, and on my property the harvest was down from 350 or so to 15. I'm not sure it was any one thing, but I hope it's not a sign of the future.

That's a pair (drake and hen) of white winged scoters, not goldeneyes. Just google the birds, dozens of clear photos pop up. I would love to know the story behind the photos.

White Winged Scoter. The only reason I know is that it's the duck on the 1969 federal stamp, the year I was born. I've always wanted to have one mounted.

A comment titled: Habitat in response to a report titled: Who Would Have Thought?

Weather does push ducks around, always has, always will. The problem with SE La. is habitat. The large areas of marsh created by the river is all but gone. That was not only the main draw for ducks, but it's was also why they stayed. And with the little good marsh that remains, the hunting pressure pushes the ducks out quickly.

A comment titled: Maxus in response to a report titled: Browning Maxus

This is my second season with mines, shoots 3 inch #2s all day long with no problem, dropped it in the water about a month ago and there isn't a single spot of rust, still looks new. Overall it's a very light gun, fits me well and the finish is holding up well.

A comment titled: Lease in response to a report titled: Sunday Smackdown!

It's a lease but from what I've heard and read just about everyone is doing well in SE La.

The last three hunts have been great for us. For the most part we've been patient and allowing them to decoy for the easy shots instead of blasting at anything moving. Makes for great hunts early in the season. If the teal move out we'll be in for some tough hunts.

A comment titled: Thermacell in response to a report titled: MOSQUITOS

Nothing is 100% but I've had good luck with Thermacell with the earth scent. Get the holster and light it before you go in the woods, cuts down on the noise and it will be warmed up and pumping by the time you get to your spot.

A comment titled: Good deal in response to a report titled: New place to buy corn

I stopped by yesterday, bought corn and a bag of attractant named The Good Stuff put out by the same company that distributes the corn. At $9.99 per 50# bag it's basically the same price as Wally-World and Academy on a per # basis.

A comment titled: La. Outdoors in response to a report titled: Do Shops Screen Archery Techs ?

From personal experience La. Outdoors is the best. Brad and his staff have been more than helpful. I bought my son a bow and a rifle from Brad and the service was top notch. And with that rifle my son shot a monster 8pt Brad is mounting for us.

Now are these guys perfect? Well, who is?

Tony is 100% correct. The bottom line: Loss of marsh = loss of ducks.
