Big Thanks to the A$$ Hole that decided he needed my dog kennel and cover more than I did Saturday morning in Pecan Island. In case you hadn't realized it yet, there is an extension cord in the back pouch, 10 brand new bumpers in the top pouch and two leashes in the side pouch.
After returning from a great hunt where we were fortunate enough to limit out, I got back to the truck to find my kennel and brand new cover were stolen out the back of the truck. I just wanted to post this so everyone can be aware that there are low life pieces of crap out there that will rob you at the launch. I guess I'll have to start chaining my kennels to the truck bed when I leave to hunt now. This was a small launch on the side of the road so everyone be careful leaving ice chest, dog kennels etc if your using one of these types of launches.
Looking at putting one or the other on my Xpress H22B. Any pro's and con's for the power pole vs the minn kota Talon? Probably go with a sporstman 2 power pole or should I look at upgrading to the professional series. From what I can tell the only difference is the mounting bracket and arm pivot being metal vs. composite.
Going to be looking at a new boat for this fall. I've got a 17.5 Hydrasport now and it's perfect for marsh fishing and making runs to the islands on calm days but when the wind picks up or there is a good amount of tide it makes it a tough ride. I would like something bigger and not 20 years old. I am looking into Bluewave, Nautic Star & Xpress. I do a lot of fishing during duck season on my lease and like to make runs to last isle and timbalier in the summer. An Xpress would be great for the winter time when I run in shallow bays but what about handling the long runs out to the islands with a little chop? Any one have any pros or cons for these three boats. Looking for 19-21 foot boat. If I got xpress I would get the hyperlift hull, blue wave would be the evolution or super tunnel. Nautic Star would be one of there shallow bay models too.
Thanks in advance
Anybody have any good recomendations for good goose guides for the conservation season? Trying to set something up next month for 6 of us.
I took a scouting trip down to my duck lease two weeks ago. I noticed yesterday that my license plate was missing from my boat trailer. Does anyone know what I need to do to get a new license plate and what is required? Is this a hastle to get from DMV. I tried calling DMV and kept getting recording
Went to use the boat this weekend. Trolling motor battery charger said good to go. So away we went. Get on the water no juice. Got home plugged it back up and charger said charged again. Checked the batteries on at 7 and other at 5. Question is my charger the problem or have the batteries worn out and developed memory so they won't take a full charge but the charger reads them as full.
Getting into Bow Hunting and saw on wlf website they offer a bow hunting course. However, nothing is shown for times or if I can take it online. Has anyone taken this course and is it worth it? I've been hunting for 8 years now, but just getting into deer hunting to fill the time before duck season opens. I know it's not required here in LA but was thinking about future trips outside the state.
Looking at getting into a lease this year around Pointe a la Hache. How has the hunting been the last few years around there and is there anywhere that rents RV spots or camps?
Where is the nearest place to hunt some flooded timber from Baton Rouge. I've never hunted in the woods and am thinking about making a few hunts like between Christmas and New Years.
Thanks
What are some ways to work your dog on blind retrieves. It seems like in the back yard he does fine. I've taken him to a pipe line I have in the neighborhood and dropped dummies 75 yards away and worked him. This weekend he was very hesitant to just take off on a lot of blind retrieves. We had the good fortune of having several birds on the water for him to get and he would swim to one and get it but on the way he switched the birds (I know how to fix this problem) but when he delivered the bird and I sent him back again he would act like he didn't remember marking the other ones. He's 4-1/2 years old and normally works very well. Is this because he was in water and we train on land?
Where can you buy signs that say 'Posted No Hunting' in the Baton Rouge area. Thanks I just need 2 or 3.
I saw these three ducks on my job site yesterday and took a picture. Are these Black ducks? I didn't think we had any real black ducks down here. I didn't see any white bands on the wings.
I've got a 50# Great White Motor Guide Trolling motor. Two weekends ago I noticed it spinning very loudly and when raised it up to check on the prop nut. The prop nut was tight but I noticed you could pull the prop away from the motor about 1/2' and it would spring back in towards the motor. I figured that is what was causing all the noise. It worked the rest of the day in variable and full speed but was very loud. This weekend I used it and could only work it on full speed. When I switched to variable I got nothing. Needless to say after about 3 minutes of using it it quit running. Anyone ever experience this and how much am I looking at to repair? Trying to decide if it's worth buying a new one or spending the money to replace this one. Also I have a big foot switch on it, is that easy to connect to a new TM if I got that route?
Anyone know who I can call to see about getting a pond stocked with some bream? Looking for someone who will come to Baton Rouge and also Many La.
Thanks
A buddy of mine asked me to take him fishing. He can count on one hand how many times he's been fishing so I jumped at the chance to get a newcomer involved. We will be in New Orleans on Friday for a wedding so I told him I would take him Saturday since we'll be within an hour of tons of places. I've never fished Lafitte. Is it pretty easy to navigate through the marsh down there? I want to show my friend a good time so he'll enjoy it and hopefully get him hooked. If someone is going out that morning and doesn't mind me following them out I have no problem buying them a case of beer, bait or some cash for fuel. I have a 17 foot hydrosport and can meet them wherever they launch.
I'm going to a camp on the tickfaw this weekend. Are there any good spots to catch some sacs or catfish on the tickfaw. Figured it's still to cold for Bass
What is the best location to get an accurate report of the tide in Port Sulpher. Looks like might be rethinking where we hunt this weekend.
I'm hunting this weekend in Many and was wondering if rattling or using a primos can would be effective. I'm a duck hunter and this is my 3rd time deer hunting so I don't know when to use artificial calls. Is the rut over in that area? I figure with the cold weather and no moon there should be a lot of movement.
Duck hunting has been pretty slow this year on our lease so with this cold weather moving in I think me and a buddy are going to hunt my wife's family land. I've only deer hunted 4 times in my life so I'm not sure what is considered baiting and what isn't and I don't feel like messing with Johnny Law.
If I put out corn just on the ground on a pipeline or arounda tree stand we have is that considered baiting? Also what about these products I see everywhere like c mere deer? Are they worth the money. This land is never hunted but we have seen deer and 3 water sources.
What do I need to do if I want to get a boat trailer registered? I am looking at a couple boats that don't have the trailer registered. Do I just need to call the DMV?
Thanks
Agree completely with the cross wind set up & DR 85. They have one with CD you can listen to in the truck. Put some decoys about 30 yards down wind of your blind and a few in front. That way the ducks aren't looking directly at you when they are coming in. I hunted Port Sulphur 3 years ago in a spot called the Four Corners. Our lease was a triangle that started off the canal that runs out to Barataria. We only saw birds late in the season and they would raft up in the middle of bays. Good Luck to you.
Me and 6 friends also just got into a lease down there. So hopefully we add some pressure on the birds. We've made two trips scouting but none in the last month. We've all been too busy.
Cuttem, Where is your lease? We're about 2 miles from Beshels. Email me your info and I'll text you what we see over the weekend. Also depending on where your lease is there is one canal that looks open on google but during low tide it's actually damned up with rocks and you can hit them. It's the last section of the first cut from main canal heading to 3rd bay.
I'll be either in a white or silver 4 door gmc with 16' go devils.
I use interstate batteries. My father in law gave me the boat last year. I think the batteries are 3-4 years old. I charge them up every time after I use the boat. Prob just time for new batteries. Gonna get them checked out first though.
Thanks for the tips
I do the exact same thing. Nothing wrong with that. The 3 days before the opener are the worst for me. Sitting at work is hard enough as it is but knowing I get to be in the marsh in less that 72 hours makes the time crawl by. You can tell all the guys that live around me who hunts and who doesn't. Grass isn't cut anymore leaves are all in yard, trucks are filthy etc.
Where can you get these baits?
I have ridden in a boat with a gator tail 35 and my hunting buddy upgraded to a 35 Go devil this year. The go devil is a beast and has gotten me out of straight mud more times than I would like. The gator tail does the same thing but we never get stuck when we use that one. Both are great motors. The GTR has electric trim which is nice. It all depends on what you want trim, reverse etc. Like Coot said just test ride them. The type of boat us use will also make a difference. My buddies GTR is on a 15' jon boat vs the other one on a 16' go devil boat wiht flotation. The go devil boat takes mud and shallow water a lot better because that is what it's made for so keep that in mind when you ride. Both run about 25 with 2 ppl and standard gear.
How shallow is that area. I tried going out to Lake Mechantlast Friday and kept finding mud flats. I went from Falgoust Canal down through Decade and cut across bay Raccourci(on idle because I didn't know you had to cross it on step because it's so shallow. When I finally got to Lake Mechant I hit the last mud flat past those camps and decided I was done with pushing my boat off of flats and headed back in. It was also getting late and my wife had to be back to be at a wedding.
The duck bombs (bacon, cream cheese, jalapeno wrapped) is my favorite way to grill. However you can take a black iron skillet and put some garlic and onions and cook that down. Take some red wine and pour it in the skillet and throw your duck breast in too. I like to sear them on both sides for two minutes with the fire really high. Then just take out and pour some juice over the duck breast and serve with mash taters, cheese grits or rice and enjoy.
I've used rocks before but that was his first year. I think the problem is now I work from 7 in the morning till 6 at night so training has slacked. I worked him everyday on the holidays and he's back on track. Made 4 blind retrieves in the marsh behind the blind for some green heads and that did my heart good. I also need to get him in the water more for training.
I have two Drake jackets. A fleece and a est pull over. Both are great. For the money now just buy one of the 3-1 or 4-1 systems for 220. You can't beat that price when alone a drake jacket will cost you 100-150. I usually wear my waders to hunt but during teal season I have some Duck Commander bibs that are great. They have both the fleece lined and unlined. Cost me around 75 dollars. A buddy of mine wears the drake pants and he likes them a lot.
Check the wlf website and look at the WMA it should map if they have a restricted area.
Guys Relax. Sounds like this guy is new to fishing. I would be more pissed at the owner of the camp. They should have told you the island was shut down for fishing and offered you your money back. Glad you got some advise from the website(which is what it's for, not bashing others for mistakes) and found some fish.
HA. Great afternoon. Thanks again. I'm gonna get him a lunch alright. Might even supersize it since he waited till 30 minutes before dark to catch that big red.
Went a year ago to the week for mine last year. We launched from Bridge side and headed into Caminada bay b/c the outside water was so choppy. If you head North West into the bay there is a big reef. We caught trout there and saw some birds near by. When the bite stopped we got out in front of the birds and picked up some more trout. We got bait at Bridge side also. If your staying on the beach side get some crab traps we had a blast down there. Also fished out of Sand Dollar on Sunday and just hopped from island to island just have to find clean water. Good Luck
We went last year for my BP and we fished the bay side 3 days straight and caught trout. Fish back in Caminada and you'll be fine.
Thanks for the advice. Where is the best place to launch. I'm assuming this is all duck ponds so we just need to find some cuts with moving water and grass beds to target the reds and bass. Do the crank baits you have on your web page work for reds and bass?
I have an 870 express super mag adn shoot 2-3/4 shells all the time. Not sure what Coonass is talking about. I have never had any complaints. I think everyone should own one. I am going to buy a super black eagle for duck season this year. You can't beat it for a semi auto. Also I want to keep my remington in better shape to pass down to my kids some day. The saltwater did a number on my barrel this year.
Think it's 10 miles from Cypremort State Park Launch. Just head out at 210* bearing and you'll hit the pass. Just be careful and don't get outside of the markers. The reef starts right at the mouth on the right.
We were out there behind the island on Saturday. Did ok. Where were yall fishing. The other boat we went with scratched and they went out of sand dollar towards bird island.
I was down in Pointe a la hache. I think it was lost because the screws I had on the trailer holding it down were still there. Unless the thief was very considerate. I keep my trailers locked at all times. Can you get a permanent trailer license for a boat like you can for a utility trailer?
