Frank Davis seasoning: I tried to purchase some bronzing mix on Frank's website and found no spices listed. I sent him an email but did not receive a response. Has he discontinued his spice business? Is there another place to purchase them and if not, does anyone have the recipe for the bronzing mix. Please send me an email if you can help. Thanks, Emmett

I have an 18' Scully aluminum hull and am thinking about making a frame to mount lights for night fishing. Any advice/experience on the type of lights that work best, that is sodium, etc. and the brand/type of generator that has worked well? Any design advice would also be appreciated.

The only good quality of ethanol is it will clean your fuel system and engine. The cleaning can be bad in some cases. You can buy a fuel additive to do this cleaning. Taxpayers subsidize ethanol to the extent of about $1.45 per gallon per http://zfacts.com/p/63.html and then you pay for the ethanol again when you buy gas. It does not reduce our dependence on foreign oil. It does not clean up the air. It reduces your mpg. Farmers and ethanol producers love it in spite of the cost to taxpayers. If the subsidy/mandate is removed ethanol will no longer be added to gasoline (it is not economically viable to produce). It has caused engine and tank damage in numerous cases. Why would our congress force us to subsidize ethanol and mandate its use in spite of it being such an unwise thing to do? Their motives cannot assumed to be good or good for us. Most people do not know the facts about ethanol and likely do not care. If we wait until it is too late to care, things will not be good. Ethanol is one of a large number of things our government does to our detriment (harm). Writing/emailing Mary Landrieu will be as fruitless as fishing without a hook. The government is also doing all they can to slow or stop exploration and production of crude oil. The need for a change in government and change for us too, is long past due.

A quote from a founding father/President - 'I appoint...a day of public Thanksgiving to Almighty God...to ask Him that He would...pour out His Holy Spirit on all ministers of the Gospel; that He would...spread the light of Christian knowledge through the remotest corners of the earth;...and that He would establish these United States upon the basis of religion and virtue.' Thomas Jefferson

Treacherous/treasonous is a supreme court that would declare separation of church and state to be the law of the land in spite of glaring and well known evidence to the contrary. Ever wonder why?

Fished last Thursday out of Cocodrie and 2 of us caught 38 specs on plastic. The water temp was around 87 and there were lots of small fish. The bite was slow. We kept grinding away to get 38.

When I was a kid, my Mother used to tell me that I was deaf in one ear and couldn't hear out of the other(because of my selective hearing). She knew what she was talking about because now that is exactly true. My deafness, in the one ear that can partially hear, is high frequency sounds like the alarm on my '97 mercury 115 hp motor and I cannot hear it at all. Does anyone know of a way to attach a louder alarm to the motor or where I could have it done?

The water temp in Sister Lake is 37 degrees this morning. In my years of winter fishing and checking water temps I haven't seen the water temp go much below 50 degrees. Does anyone remember such extremely low water temps in the past?

January 09, 2010 at 6:49am

Three of us fished Dularge yesterday 1/4/09 and started in 12-14 foot water with plastics on the bottom. We had 52 specs when the bite stopped and we moved to the flats and caught the next 23 under corks. The water temp was 47 when we started and was 48 when we finished. We also caught a number of rat reds. No other boats were fishing.

This is one of my fishing buddies. When I clean fish behind the house, he comes up for scraps or bellies from the specs. We named him Willie Welfare because anytime he sees me outside, he stops working for his food in the bayou and comes over looking for a handout. He makes me feel like a democrat/liberal/socialist/communist. I've probably ruined Willie for the rest of his bird life. What should I do?

Update: Sorry, I was unable to upload the picture of Willie so just imagine a Great White Egret standing on the corner of the slab with a piece of fish in his mouth.

Ethanol Tester

I received and tried out the tester sold on ebay and found no ethanol in my gasoline. The device is a glass test tube with a screw cap on top. You put water in the tube up to the mark and gasoline up to the next mark. By shaking the tube any ethanol in the gas is absorbed into the water causing the water level in the tube to go above the mark. Gradients above the mark tell you the % of ethanol in the gas tested. The bad news is the gasoline dissolved the paint markings on the tube. I am trying a paint pen to redo the markings and hopefully it will stand up to the gas. Let me know if you know how to mark the glass tube to withstand gas.

September 16, 2009 at 8:45am

There is a simple device for testing gasoline for the presence of ethanol and it is available on ebay for $10. I ordered one today and will be testing it shortly.

DMAN1968, I agree with you, the legislation might or might not become law, public restoration money should not be spent on private property unless the owner agrees to allow public access on any canals, etc.

John, I have had a remote control ipilot for several years and use the anchor function and remote but not the advanced features. When new, I could use the remote from anywhere in the boat but not long ago, I had to be close to the troll motor for it to work. I changed batteries and got a new remote but the problem was not fixed. My troll motor pro said the fix was to replace the gps, which has the receiver for the remote in it. The cost was several hundreds of dollars so I chose to stay close to the troll motor. I have also had a problem with the troll motor continuing to turn after I released the turn button on the remote. I find it is best to stop or slow the boat down to a crawl before using the anchor function, to avoid an initial strong steering or power control, since it takes a few seconds to engage.

Capt. Ricky, only good things would happen if the pickets reef were expanded and or duplicated in other areas. It might even help with the crowded conditions.

A comment titled: Re: Fishing out of coco marina in response to a report titled: Fishing out of coco marina

It is common for a fisherman to think that if he knew where that secret spot is located that he could catch fish one after another. The truth is that many who fish can be sitting on a school of fish and not be able to catch them, unless the fish are in a feeding frenzy, which they are not most of the time. The best way to become a good fisherman is to be taught by a good fisherman. Another way is to read a good book and learn but only an exceptional few would be able to do that. In my experience, fishing is as much about hunting them as it is about catching them and both require continual learning and hard work. Go get em.

A comment titled: Re: Pass A Loutre Navigation question in response to a report titled: Pass A Loutre Navigation question

In years past I have navigated this pass many times and found it to be treacherous because of insufficient water flow. The channel was not marked and it was necessary to read the water to find and stay in the channel. I ran aground a number of times but was fortunate to be able to work off ground. Many have run aground and had to be towed. Those who run this pass regularly can best navigate it. If you decide to give it a try, you would be well advised to purchase towing coverage. With the high water in the river currently, it might be easier to navigate. I usually ran it when the river was down.
