I am sure ready for this quarantine to be over. I miss seeing all of my returning customers and meeting all of my new ones. In my off time I have been taking great care of the Drake Lodge and making improvements to it for the fishing season this summer and the duck season this fall. If you’ve never stayed at my lodge, I highly recommend you check it out. It sits up high in Shell Beach and you have a nice view of the marsh and bayou from the front porch. It’s the perfect place to relax before your hunting and fishing trips with me. As for the fishing I’ve been getting out at least once a week. Family and friends are loving their trips with me. Last week I had my buddy Jeff and his son Max. We got on the trout and wore them out. If you know me, you know trout fishing is my main thing and I love taking people out to catch trout. Of course this time of year, the trout are out in the open water so we need the wind to stay manageable to fish trout safely and comfortably. I watch the forecast closely every day and if we can get to trout, we will. Typically, if we can get to them, we get the limit. We are opening back up for business so I’d love to take you and show you what I’ve learned about trout over all my years of guiding. The lodge is clean and the trout are biting. As always, if you would like to book a hunt or schedule a fishing trip you can contact me, Capt. Jimmy Corley by phone at (504) 258-4431 or by email at cap.jimmy.corley@gmail.com. Quarantine or not, my family is going fishing! It's the time of year that the trout make their big run out to the spawning grounds and what a Spring it has been so far. I grew up fishing and my family loves to spend time outdoors so we are using this time to fish together. The fishing has been incredible with limits almost every time we go. As long as the wind is right we are fishing the outside edges and bays and loading up on speckled trout. With all that being said, I’m ready to get back to work taking my clients on the the charter fishing trips of a lifetime. Charter fishing trips are still open during the Covid-19 restrictions and we have plenty spots open to go chase redfish and speckled trout. Our lodge is clean as a whistle and ready! It seems like most folks are ready to start getting things back to normal and what better way than with a charter fishing trip in the Louisiana marsh? One of the best things about a charter fishing trip after all this is that you can still limit the amount of people you are around. A couple close family members or co-workers is all you need to put a trip together. We can also safely accommodate groups as well. It’s really up to you. The main thing is, let’s start getting things back to normal and do it safely! I have been fishing out of Shell Beach with my fiancé and my son Jimmy. We have bean tearing up the trout on days when weather is right. The fishing has not even peaked yet and will only get better. We are catching nice sized trout too. Live shrimp from Campo’s marina is the ticket. That’s why I’m always up before sunrise getting the shrimp in the live well and getting the boat ready for my customers. I can’t wait to start seeing all of you again. If you would like to book a hunt or schedule a fishing trip you can contact me, Capt. Jimmy Corley by phone at (504) 258-4431 or by email at cap.jimmy.corley@gmail.com. Also you can check out our website at waterfowlspecialist.com. Don’t forget we have lodging available if needed. Probably the most underrated fish on the Gulf Coast is the sheepshead, also known as the bay snapper. Using live or dead shrimp as bait, you can catch an unlimited supply of these fish. They are voracious eaters too. When they are turned on, they are every bit as aggressive as redfish. Every year in February, the sheepshead start their spawning period. This means they are bunched up and doing their thing for a while. I like to target them this time of year and put my customers on the ultimate meat haul experience. The fishing action is as fast as you can get a bait out. As soon as you drop your shrimp down, you have a sheepshead on the line. It's a real fun time. I highly suggest this trip for anyone who is new to fishing. They will be hooked for life! The great thing about coming on a sheepshead meat haul trip with me is that you don?t have to do any of the dirty work. When we get back to the dock after your trip, you can relax and enjoy a cold beer while I clean all of those sheepshead. Many people say that they are too hard to clean but that doesn't scare me. I've been doing this for so long, it's second nature. Personally, I think sheepshead are a delicious fish and I have all the right knives to get them cleaned up and packed up for my customers. The sheepshead run should last into March. I highly suggest you come check out a sheepshead meat haul and see what it?s all about. The spring fishing season has begun and it just goes to show every year is different. The big thing we are dealing with this year is not one but two openings of the Bonnet Carre Spillway. The spillway opening inundates our brackish fishery with freshwater and changes fish habits and patterns until it closes. It's a necessary evil, but it doesn't do any favors for the fishing. As you know, I'm a die hard speckled trout charter guide. Whenever I can catch them, trout are my favorite species- unless my clients request something else. While there is still plenty time for the early-summer speckled trout run to kick off, we are having to work hard to find them with the amount of freshwater in our estuaries right now. The trout are starting to spawn and they need higher salinity water do that. I did find some trout recently, but it's almost a 2 hour ride from Shell Beach and I can only do that run on days when winds are favorable. The redfish though. Man! They are on fire. Thank goodness for the redfish. Thankfully my clients have had a hell of a time catching the redfish. They put up a much better fight than the trout and they are great to eat cooked in many different ways. We are finding them all over the place right now from near Shell Beach all the way out to Bay Eloi. Of course the redfishing is best where you can find some grass beds. We fish live shrimp under a popping cork along the grass beds. There is simply no better way to catch reds. I am currently booking trips for the summer. I'd love to take you on one of these amazing redfish trips and trout catching too when the conditions are right. As always, if you would like to book a hunt or schedule a fishing trip you can contact me, Capt. Jimmy Corley by phone at (504) 258-4431 or by email at cap.jimmy.corley@gmail.com. Things are really about to pickup with the fishing in Shell Beach, LA. We should be seeing the end of the cold fronts here soon. It’s not that the cold fronts shut down the bite, but the high winds that come with a front make things more challenging. Lately we have been leaning on the big redfish and the sheepshead to make for a good day. The sheepshead spawn this time of year. I have been locating large spawning schools. It makes for some very fun every cast action. The best thing about catching sheepshead with a guide like myself is, I clean them while you relax at the dock! That’s often people’s biggest complaint about sheepshead- they are hard to clean. Well no worries here, I have plenty years experience cleaning them and will be glad to do it for my clients who want to take some home for a delicious meal. The big redfish are abundant right now too. They can handle cold water much better than the speckled trout. Their big thick skin and scales protect them from getting too cold, so they continue to feed very well through the winter. As always I fish with live shrimp from Campo’s Marina in Shell Beach. It’s worth every penny to know I have the best natural bait available. With Mardi Gras over it’s time to enjoy better crawfish prices and Jazz Fest in New Orleans. If you plan on visiting the city for Jazz Fest, come spend a night at my lodge and make a fishing trip with me. I promise it won’t disappoint. Well duck season 2018-2019 has come to a close. All in all we are thankful for the opportunities we had this year. It was a poor migration year because of all the rainfall up and down the flyway and the lack of major cold weather. But we still shot quite a few ducks and we are already looking forward to next year.

The fishing is just getting started for 2019. Right now the redfish are fired up and we have been catching them consistently. Trout have taken a hiatus at the moment but any rises in water temps will put trout on the menu too. If you follow me, you know that catching speckled trout is always my first priority so I am always eager to get on them when they turn on.

That’s not to say that redfish aren’t fun too, and man they are biting right now. Redfish are fun to target in the colder months as we often find them bunched up in deeper channels or in the middle of ponds in schools. My clients love casting out a Campo’s live shrimp into a school of redfish. A couple pops of the cork and it shoots down with a hungry red on the end of the line.

This is a great time to come fishing with me in Louisiana because our Mardi Gras season is just getting started. You can enjoy the festivities in New Orleans and then head down to Shell Beach to stay with me and go on a world-class fishing trip.

As a Louisiana duck hunting guide, you learn year after year to deal with what Mother Nature throws your way. Some years we have lots of rain, some years we have lots of wind, and some years we have lots of ducks. This is not one of those years for ducks but we sure have had lots of rain. It’s my job as a guide to figure out what to do when the ducks just don’t show up like they have in years past. Every night before I go to bed my mind is racing thinking about Louisiana duck hunting.

What I have don’t this year is really try to hunt where the ducks want to be. In theory, that sounds simple but on a year where duck numbers are low this can be quite the challenge. It involves me covering a lot of ground to check my different properties. I have to constantly be on the move to figure out where the ducks want to hang out for a few days. We have made the best of our opportunities when I put my Louisiana duck guide clients in the blind. Some days we shoot lots of bluebills and some days we shoot teal. I am always trying to find the Gadwall but they have been in short supply this year. We did shoot TWO banded bluebills in one hun though. That was pretty awesome.

We’ve had some really great hunts. If you just count numbers, then this has not been our best year, but with a lower duck hatch this year and the lack of cold weather to force migration, we are having a pretty good year. I just love duck hunting so I put a lot of work into making a great experience for my clients. I have even had some clients shoot a few ducks and head out on a fishing trip with me. The fishing is almost always good here so a blast and cast trip is never a bad idea.

Duck season is finally here in Delacroix. All of the anticipation finally ends this weekend as we kick off the coastal zone opener. I had a chance to get an early jump on the hunting with the youth weekend. It was a sign of good things to come as my youth hunters got their limit. The morning started off way better than I thought with a group of pintails trying to come into the decoys before shooting light. Once it was shooting time, the blue wing teal started to buzz. My youth hunters shot a bunch. It won’t be long before they really get a feel for it and are knocking down birds on a regular basis.

I called in a group of grey ducks, but the hunters missed. We even had some black-bellied whistling ducks come in, but once again the hunters missed lol! We have plenty of feed left in our ponds I am very excited to be blessed by another year without any hurricanes.

It’s been a long week of dressing blinds and scouting. The thunderstorms haven’t made it any easier but we are just about prepped and ready for the weekend. I am booked up for opening weekend but I do have spots open for first split.

Hunting with me is as about a comfortable experience as you can get. I have my boat set up for everyone to hunt out of. You sit comfortably in the boat as we pick the best spot to hunt. My dog Ella retrieves all the ducks and I do all the work! All you have to do is show up with your gun and your shells and I will take care of the rest! If you want to hunt Delacroix this season, give me a call. We also do Louisiana blast and cast trips.

This fishing is as good as it gets right now in Shell Beach, Louisiana. It’s just a magical time of year when the weather finally starts to cool off and the harvest season begins. The marsh is full of shrimp and the fish have taken notice. They are schooling up and feeding actively right now. I don’t think you could pick a better time to come fishing. Book your New Orleans fishing trips as soon as possible. Days are filling up fast.

We have been taking several large groups lately. I run my business so that I can take groups of any size. I work with several other charter captains on large groups and we make sure our clients have the best chance for success. All of the captains I work with have a lifetime of experience on the water and most have fished this area their entire lives. When you combine that many years of experience, you get to see the great Louisiana fishing trips that we have been having.

We were fishing trout on the outside for a while but they seem to have migrated further in. I am focusing on major waterways in the interior marsh. Places where multiple bayous come together or passes in between bays. I fish exclusively with Campo’s live shrimp. My clients spend good money to fish with me so I want to use the most effective bait there is. No hungry fish will turn down a live shrimp. You can get by with plastics Im sure, but live bait is the simplest way for a boat of clients to get on the fish.

We will be fishing everyday this fall. If you want to get on a Shell Beach speckled trout fishing trip, please contact me. We will also be offering Louisiana duck hunts starting in November.

If you would like to book a hunt or schedule a fishing trip you can contact me, Capt. Jimmy Corley by phone at (504) 258-4431 or by email at cap.jimmy.corley@gmail.com. The dog days of summer are coming to an end in Shell Beach, LA and the trout are taking notice. The great fall speckled trout run is starting and nobody is happier about it than me. Trout are no doubt my favorite species to target, but conditions can alter trout fishing more so than they do redfish. I’m fine with catching redfish too, my customers love it, but there’s just something about catching a limit of 100 or more trout that gets me going.

I think the New Orleans trout fishing will only get better from here. We are lucky that we didn’t get any major storms and all the conditions are lining up. The white shrimp are already on the inside, so now the trout just have to wrap up their spawning cycles and start moving to the interior. The trout are starting to school up pretty good and that is helping me target them. I am not fishing the interior quite yet but you can tell the trout are staging up to start moving in.

Redfishing is as good as ever. We are catching bull reds where we trout fish. There’s nothing like seeing my clients get excited about hooking up with a bull redfish. After we land the fish and take a few pics we get back to trout fishing.

I did have some clients recently who requested redfish. Our trip was very successful as they caught their limit and then played catch and release for a while. The recent heat wave has made fishing past 11am pretty tough, but we start early and it’s pretty comfortable with a nice breeze in the morning hours.

I would recommend not bringing a dog. I was out yesterday and today and have seen several gators. For youth weekend I had one about 7' in the pond eating some of the kids' ducks. The water temperature is running between 72-73 degrees and the water is still in the marsh. With this east wind it will stay there, it looks like.
